Description

Park Tool DAG-2.2 Bicycle Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge A misaligned derailleur hanger can cause skipping, missed shifts, and wreak general havoc on your bicycle's drivetrain. The Park Tool DAG-2.2 Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge is an indispensable shop tool that can be used to both measure and straighten misaligned derailleur hangers, diagnosing and solving many shifting problems. Compatible with virtually all derailleur- equipped bicycles, and adjusts to work with wheels from 16" to 29"+ . Use of the DAG-2.2 is relatively straightforward (full instructions are included with the tool): EASY TO USE The tool is installed in place of the derailleur, extending the plane of the hanger to magnify any alignment issues. The sliding indicator is set to the depth of the rim surface and locked in place. This measurement is checked against other points on the wheel to determine the amount of misalignment. Read more The shaft of the tool is used to bend the derailleur hanger into alignment. Finally, the indicator is reset to the rim to check the adjustment. Once this process is complete for horizontal alignment, it is repeated for vertical alignment. Read more BUILT TO LAST The DAG-2.2 is made of heavy gauge chrome-plated steel with a large inner shaft for added strength. The replaceable threaded tip features extra clearance and reach to fit most frame/hanger combos including low clearance thru axle hangers. • You May Think You Don’t Need This Tool, But You Do
Park Tool DAG-2.2 Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge is another “made to last a lifetime” tool. Which is a good thing, because you may not think you’ll use it often, but once you have, you’ll use it at least once a season (more if you ride hard, crash or bail often). I had always thought a wrench & “eyeballing” was good enough to straighten my derailleur hanger, but could never get my shifting super smooth. I decided to bite the bullet & get the right tool for the job. I decided to spend the extra money on Park Tools as I wanted a strong, well made tool, if I was going to use it to bend my hanger. The DAG-2.2 is made of heavy gauge steel w/chrome platting. This should help protect against rust. Using the DAG-2.2 was fairly easy. After removing the derailleur, you screw the tool into the mounting hole. Then slide the sliding bracket & the indicator rod to the outside of the rim (as close as possible w/out touching the rim). Tighten the indicator in place w/the knob. Move the sliding bracket so it’s inside the wheel (so you do not scratch your rim) & swing the tool to another position on the wheel. Move the sliding bracket & indicator to the outside of the rim & check the distance from the rim. Do this at several points around the rim. You’ll notice the sliding bracket & indicator are not at the same position along the tool as you move around the rim. This is because the mounting hole the tool is screwed into is not at the center of the wheel. If you find that the indicator shows the alignment of the hanger to be off, use the tool carefully, to apply pressure, pushing or pulling to “bend” the hanger slightly. Realign the indicator & continue until it is as close to equal as possible all around the rim. If the hanger is severely bent, you may have to replace it as bending it could break or damage the hanger or your frame. After using the DAG-2.2, I was able to install my derailleur & get super smooth shifting. A derailleur alignment gauge is a great tool to have & a must if you’re hard on your MBT or derailleur. If you want a tool that’ll last a lifetime, invest in the Park Tools DAG-2.2. If you can’t justify the cost, get another brand, you’ll find this is a tool that makes a tremendous difference. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope you found it helpful. ... show more

  • The Professional's Tool for Fixing a Bent Derailleur Hangar
Although Leonard Zinn (the guru of bike maintenance) rates fixing a derailleur hanger as a level 3 job (for advanced home mechanics or shop mechanics), it is actually a very straightforward job. You unbolt your rear derailleur, screw in the the threaded bolt of the DAG 2.2 and then rotate the tool and check to see if the distance gauge (rod) remains constant around the wheel. If it is not, then you apply leverage to the steel bar and bend the derailleur hanger in the appropriate direction until it is true in the horizontal and vertical axes. Of course that works best with a steel frame due to its ductility or an only slightly bent aluminum hanger. If you have a badly bent aluminum hanger, then you are better off buying a replacement since they are usually $10 or less for your particular frame. (a machine shop can also custom make you one for about $30 if your frame manufacturer went out of business) If your derailleur hanger is made from titanium then you need to have the bike inspected by a reputable shop with experience in frame alignment problems, because titanium does not have the ductility of steel or aluminum. (most reputable titanium frame manufacturers after about 2002 use aluminum hangers as an industry standard) In my neighborhood, I am the bike fix-it guy and probably twice a year a kid brings in their bike after a crash with a bent derailleur hanger. I replaced my old derailleur alignment tool with this DAG 2.2 Park Tool model and so far, it has made every job a cake walk. This tool is well made from solid tool steel (my guess is a Rockwell Hardness of about 61) and is made to the standards of a professional shop mechanic. So far mine has been five stars and this is one of the better tools that Park Tool has in their lineup. ... show more

  • Most-needed and least-known tool
If you have a bike with a derailleur, you need this. One of the most common kinds of bike damage is a bent derailleur hanger, or it was just misaligned when the bike was new. There are probably more bikes with misaligned hangers than there are bikes with out-of-true wheels. No lie. These hangers are designed to bend, to prevent damage to frame or derailleur - they are soft because they are sacrificial parts. They can be replaced, but nine times out of ten, they can safely be bent back into position. Whether because a hanger was bent, or because on a given bike the frame dropout is slightly out, or the derailleur itself is slightly out and the tolerances of both items are stacking up, even on a brand-new bike, regular re-alignment is needed, just as a regular wheel alignment on a car is periodically needed. I have 5 bikes with derailleurs. I got the tool for one in particular, but EVERY BIKE I own was out of alignment, including one that has literally 100 miles on it and is totally and completely spotless...can't be told from new. In fact, that one was one of the more misaligned of the group, which includes my regular road bike, which gets ridden 80-100 miles a week and has in total around 5,000 miles on it...so there's no telling without checking if a given bike needs alignment or not. And the tool works great for both the checking and the realigning phases of use. ... show more

  • Super simple , extremely effective!
Super simple and extremely effective. Tried everything , new derailleur, cassette, and chain all high end items and still sloppy shifting. Never considered and alignment problem. Bike has never been crashed or droped. Stumbled into a You Tube video about hanger alignment and the tool used to check and correct problems. Thanks to Amazon my new tool arrived and was blowen away at how easy it was to check and correct misalignment. The tool it self is well made and preformed well. No complaints. You would think the bike shop where I purchased the bike would have checked this during pre delivery? Go figure. If your a serious rider and enjoy mechanical perfection purchase this tool now. Granted there are numerous other venders offering simulair tools but as we all know Park Tools is the best and most reliable source period. ... show more
