Very useful and informative! I loved the psychology involved in this workbook and that it gives you and the child the opportunity to work through this together. In my opinion, no matter the age of the child, this workbook can be extremely useful. But you’re gonna need to set time aside as a parent to go over the exercises with your child… it’s a pretty extensive book with lots of exercises

    • This is really a workbook asking questions, and responses to hypothetical situations
"Tools" for psychologists are really questionnaires. This book is really a workbook for both parent and child, It is separated into chapters, that deal with emotional expression, emotional control, communication and more, which covers the problems a child and parent faces rather comprehensively. It is designed as a work book with over 130 pages of questions and forms and tables to fill out, covering the many aspects of parenting. Professionals, and educated and insightful parents have the knowledge and skills to dig into their experience and intellect to answer the questions and fill in the blanks. But an immature child and many parents don't have that knowledge or skill. The questions, directed to both parents and child are of the type: "list your strengths... weaknesses." "How would you respond to X" "What areas need improvement" Also, there are lists of negative situations (e.g. your bike has a flat tire, someone took your seat in school) and asks how the reader would feel and respond to the situation, and what a constructive response would be. Actual practicle advice is buried inside the text of questions. For example, a series of questions describe constructive coping skills and ask the reader (child or parent) if: they have the skill, need help with the skill or can't do it. If you have the time, and your child has the patience, to go through the workbook and discuss the answers to the questions, this book will certainly help improve parenting for adults, as well as life coping skills for both adult and child. But, if you are a reader expecting to be told strategies to help a child out of an emotional crisis or meltdown, this is not the book for you. If you are a reader who is lost when it comes to parenting or parenting a difficulty child, or have a child who is too imature, or easily distracted, this is not the book for you. Personally, I would have liked to have the skills presented in text format, expanded with explanations, rational, and constrasted with maladaptive interpretations and responses, to show the advantages of the former over the latter. But that's me, I have an engineer's mindset, who wants to be sure I know the approprate response, and the reason for that response, as well as understanding that what I know is appropriate and why the alternative is not. ... show more
