Yup, six whole mini-pillows in an outer encasement. If you use all, you could probably stand on the pillow. We actually used these in combination with other older pillows, as well as a feather pillow that has three inserts, and by themselves to create three different pillows. The only negative is you have to be careful of the zipper with the other encasement. Because of a cloth foldover, it's very easy to catch material up in the zipper. And nylon zipper can split if you tug too much to get the material out. I've caught material up in it three times, but thankfully the zipper held. ... show more

Bought this pillow because I wanted a washable pillow that was not too tall. Using only 2 of the inserts makes the perfect pillow for me. I find it to be quite comfortable. The zippered cover works well. Since the pillow came with 6 inserts, I have enough for 3 pillows. Sleeping semi-prone or on my side on a waterbed, I needed a relatively thin pillow. It appears some of the layers are puffier than others which is not a criticism, but it does lend toward more adjustability. I have only given it 4 stars as I have not yet seen how it performs in the wash. ... show more

My search for a stomach sleeping pillow is over. My whole life I've slept on down pillows, and over time I've become like the princess and the pea, not only did I need the softest finest down, I also found that the inner containment case material itself was crucial, I'd ordered just about every stomach-sleeping down premium 'soft' fine thread-count cover pillow by every TOP luxury brand, and the true fact is, the only pillow soft enough in both the fill AND the containing material was Cuddle Down's heirloom down stomach sleeper pillow in a silk charmeuse case, with an additional silk charmeuse pillow case on top of that. Yes, I really can tell a difference between the silk inner pillow INSIDE the silk case - it makes a huge softness and pliability difference compared to the finest cotton threadcount, my face really feels it. Unfortunately, with the nature of that ultra delicate down fill, they get flattened and broken down within a year or two and it's been a tough pill to swallow buying a new set of those astronomically expensive pillows every year or so, they had originally cost me $100+ each, but recently went up to $400 a pop!! This was just not sustainable anymore (though this is not about pampered indulgent luxury, this is about simply what it takes anymore for me to get a decent night's sleep without developing a crick in my neck that lasts a week, or tossing in discomfort losing hours of sleep because of 'rough' pillow feeling on my face). So after putting off buying a $400 pillow for a year while my current down pillows were degrading to flat lumpy messes, I decided it was time to find a more affordable alternative. I searched far and wide and ordered 5 different pillows that purported to be for stomach sleepers, with the emphasis on flat, pancake, stomach, etc. made of various materials from down, memory foam, man-made fill etc. and among others, ordered this 'adjustable pancake' pillow with its 6 layers (almost out of curiosity more than believing it would be a solution). What to my AMAZEMENT - each of the 6 "layers" was a PERFECT individual pillow, the material of the fabric, while not being silk charmeuse, is as SOFT and pliable as silk, and the inner filling is likewise as soft as down -- the pillows were an exact duplicate of the softness of my $400 heirloom silk covered down stomach pillows. I always sleep with two pillows - with one of my arms in between, and two of these pancake pillows have PERFECTLY replaced those outrageously expensive down pillows, at the same optimal thickness, softness, pliability, yet fluffy support. I put one 'pancake' layer each into my existing charmeuse silk pillow cases and my face, neck and self slept soundly and delightfully through the night. The 'container' that these 6 layers come in is really kind of nothing but a bag as far as I'm concerned, I'd never use all six pancakes at once nor do I think the container bag is suitable as an actual pillow case to sleep on - but what I do think is I've just purchased six unbelievably perfect stomach pillows for $13 each ($80 divided by 6) - each one as soft and delightful as the $400 pillows. I obviously couldn't be more delighted by these pillows. Of course it's an open question at this point how long they will last before the fluff clumps or breaks down, but at $13 a pillow (layer) I can buy THIRTY of these before I reach the cost of one of the heirloom down pillows, so it's not a worry! ... show more

I like a flat, dense, but soft pillow -- enough density for support, but more give than foam. Something I have yet to find. I tried all different configurations of these layers: one layer was too wispy, two layers were the right height but not enough support, three layers were too high and my head sank in too far. A good idea, and I tried to make it work, but am returning it. The filling just does not have enough substance for me. ... show more

I’ve been cutting pillows open & ripping out 3/4 of the fill or using non-pillow objects (throw blankets, towels, etc.) as pillows for many years. This is the only one out of dozens of attempts & decades of searching that I liked right out of the box. Given there are 6 ‘pancakes’, using them 1 or 2 at a time may yield years of use.     • Custom fit really does work

I sleep on both my back and side. I do not believe there is a perfect single pillow for me and I have tried, down, foam filled, and memory foams. On my side I need a pillow thick enough to support my head with my neck in alignment, but on my back, I like a thinner pillow so my head is not tilted up. Also, as I have aged (now nearly 70) my ears (pinna) have become more sensitive and I need a nice soft pillow, that is not lumpy, so my ears don’t hurt after I have been sleeping on my side for an hour or more. This pillow, combined with another one fits the bill. I use 4 layers in the pancake pillow and then put another thin pillow beneath. When on my back I use just the extra pillow (which probably could be made from the unused 2 pancake layers held in another pillow case, but I have another pillow I like for that application) and on my side I use both. The pancake pillow is the one I put on top, when on my side, since I like its softness and feel. Some reviewers have complained it is too soft and wraps around their face. I have not had that problem. Others have said it gets hot. I haven’t noticed the problem with this pillow more than with any other one. Sometime during the night, I flip it over so that I am sleeping on the unused side that stayed cool since it wasn’t next to my face. As you probably can guess I am an active sleeper and am almost always awake when I roll over in bed. Currently I am having the best sleep that I have had in the past few years and this pillow is certainly part of the solution. I’m happy with my purchase. I did not give the pillow 5 stars for comfort since it does heat up somewhat and requires me to flip it, otherwise it is great. ... show more
