  • Good little drum amplifier.
Style: PA System
Wow, this is a surprising little amplifier. I wanted something affordable that would allow me and others to hear my electric drums without headphones, and this one has everything I need. Sure, there are many amps out there that are designed for drums, and also bass amps, but none of the inexpensive ones I've looked at had all the features I was looking for. Well, Powerwerks got it right with this model. It has three separate input channels, making it a mixer/amp, with options of 1/4", 1/8" and even XLR connectors. I use a 1/4" TS line from my Alesis drums, a 1/8" TRS from my cellphone, and finally XLR from my microphone. All three channels have their own independent volume controls, then there's also a master volume. It's surprising to see how many amplifiers are out there for under $300 that don't include this feature. It also has a subwoofer output. I bought an old used BIC V-80 that turns on automatically, and it really fills in the lower frequencies nicely. An added bonus I wasn't even looking for is the 35mm mounting socket. That allowed me to buy an inexpensive stand to get it up off of the floor. Wow, nice. Out of all the drum and bass amps I've seen only a few have this feature, and now I couldn't live without it. Then there's no bluetooth. I don't want or need it, and certainly don't want to pay extra for it. Bluetooth just adds to all of the things that can go wrong with an amplifier, not to mention connection problems and electrical or radio interference. If I really wanted to use anything wireless in the future I'll just buy the necessary hardware separately. This PA actually sounds good, right down to the thumping of my double-bass drums. Crisp highs, great mids, and even moderate lows. The last bonus is the Powerlink XLR in/outs for future connections to mixers and extra amplifiers. Well done. I like the fact it can be used for public speaking in places like family reunions. Haven't done that yet, but it would be so easy to take it anywhere with my stand, microphone and boom, and 25-foot XLR cable. The only complaint I have is the master volume knob.. It's tiny and rotates without any resistance or friction. While reaching around behind to adjust the level it's so easy to bump it, causing a sudden ear-splitting blast. I only consider this to be a very small issue. Five stars for the Powerwerks PW50. ... show more

  • Great PA system...
Style: PA System
I needed a portable PA system for 25 to 300 people audiences for a non-profit. We mostly run live audio to accompany a slide deck. I bought this unit for the reviews and price and the specs. I am some-what of an audiophile (still have Japanese Pioneer SX-1900 and SX-2300 units driving my classic Bose speakers) so I know a little about sound quality. This unit is super for the price. I recently used it in a 20,000 square foot facility and it completely filled the space on 60% volume setting (one Powerwerks 50 unit). We used spotters to validate the quality of the audio from each table in the facility and it was perfect. On a side note, I was impressed enough that I have retired my guitar amps (I use pedal distortion and effects and use amps only for sound projection) and now use this Powerwerks 50 to take input from the pedal directly. I am not a professional musician but I can attest the sound clarity, quality, field, and volume are remarkable. Loudness is a non-issue and I don't think I have ever had it over 20% volume capacity. The control panel is very good with 2 line-in and XLR connections, 2 channels, hi/low controls, channel and master volume, and a bright 'on' light. If you are using this only with a microphone (we used an Audio Technica ATM), you will need to turn the volumes up on both the channel and master and it completed filled a 20,000 foot venue. With a line-in instrument, you need much less volume setting for the same space. This is a quality unit and I am not really sure why the price is so low.... ... show more

  • A Comedy Show in a Box
Style: PA System
When I started setting up comedy shows in bars and restaurants, I was looking for a sound system with some portability. I bought two 600-watt active speakers, with 12" drivers. They looked and sounded great, but lugging them around was a bear. Then I bought a pair of 100-watt sound bars from Powerwerks (the PW100). They were a lot more portable, but heavy and the whole thing was overkill. I kept wondering how minimalist I could go. Could I walk into a bar or restaurant with a 50-watt toaster, a lunchbox amp? How could 50 watts be enough for a full-size room? This amp (PW50) is proof that it doesn't take much. If you're just amping the human voice, it's mostly midrange. You don't need woofers. You can get by with an array of smaller multi-purpose drivers. This amp has all of two, but it's built more rigid and durable than even these drivers really need. It's suprisingly heavy, given the minimalist footprint it leaves behind. I used it to fill a 500-seat auditorium with the sound of my voice, and it delivered. So, is there anything about this amp that merits criticism? Yeah, the phony tone control. There's no difference between cranking the treble up or turning it all the way to zero. That knob is just window dressing. For $100, you get a device a little bigger than a teeny-tinie practice guitar amp. You get a lot of bite for 50 watts. It's the most portable of all the amps I own. In terms of crystal clarity, it can't compete with the 600-watt monsters I stared with, but in many situations, it's all you'll ever need. ... show more
