  • It's not just a butter dish.
Okay, okay. I know - it's a butter dish, not a climate controlled, IoT Wi-Fi enabled, WPA2 encryption protected churned cream receptacle or anything, but even the "simple things" in life should be recognized and appreciated when they do something right. Taking it back for a minute, please allow me to explain what my previous experiences with butter dishes was like before this one came along: basic. About as basic as they can possibly come. A simple, white, ceramic butter dish. Which was fine. It was fine. If you have one now, I'm sure you'll agree: it's fine. But, now that I've had this one for a little while, I really can't find a reason to ever go back. Because here's what that classic ceramic one doesn't do: 1) Let me know at a simple glance how much butter is inside. 2) Allow me to completely remove the wrapper from the butter and yet still have the ability to know where to cut for an X-Tbsp sized portion 3) Sing to me*. 4) Feature a cover that helps to ensure that when I'm putting the lid back on, I'm not off center enough to smear butter all over the edge and/or inside of it. 5) Offer little ledges that help to ensure the butter doesn't go sliding out of the dish when I'm trying to balance a plate or an armful of dinner rolls in one hand, while clumsily attempting to butter things with the other. The list goes on (I mean not really, but you get what I'm saying). My point is: Divorce is an often ugly process, and one that can have serious, long-term, negative effects on all involved. Like when you find yourself in a tiny new apartment with about a tenth of what you once considered were things that belonged to you even though they were admittedly shared. And, how time and time again, while looking for a stick of softened butter to help make that perfect grilled cheese sandwich (as it's become a rather regular option for dinner these days), one shouldn't have to suffer each time they don't find that little, white, basic thing that in all honesty didn't do quite as good of a job as other dishes (like the one reviewed here) probably/should have been doing for the past 5-10 years or so. So, really, what are you waiting for? * This butter dish doesn't sing either. It's still awesome, though. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. But seriously, why would you? It's just a butter dish. ... show more

  • Simple Product but Very Well Designed
It seems silly to be writing about a butter dish but honestly, I'm 60 years old and this is the best butter dish I've ever had. What I like: -- Non-slip feet that make it easier to "one hand" the butter while holding a tasty roll in the other hand -- Internal "stops" that keep the butter away from the lid -- Measurement marking for both short and long butter sticks that are useful for cooking -- Clear cover so I can see how much butter is left without even touching it ... show more

  • Too small
A rare bad product from Oxo. Nice design, well executed, good quality, but simply too small to fit a western butter stick. It's virtually impossible to place a stick of butter in this thing without rubbing the clear plastic top on either the side or the top of the butter stick. Maybe if the butter is precisely, and I mean precisely, placed in the exact center of the base you won't rub the butter, but otherwise you can count on smeared butter inside the top, guaranteed. It's long enough and if it were an inch wider and an inch taller, it would be perfect. I wanted to like it and tried it for a week, but it's unacceptable. Not recommended. ... show more

  • Love this butter dish and answer to the measurement line question
After my cat shattered my glass butter dish, I was in need of a butter dish that would fit my refrigerator's designated butter area. But I was reluctant to go to plastic (didn't want that Tupperware look...not that I don't love a good Tupperware product or two!). This turned out to be perfect for me. The top stays in place so when my furry kitchen helper nudges it with his nose, the butter remains fur-free. And the rubber feet keeps that same nose from nudging the whole dish to the floor. (No, I do not condone my cats on the counter but when my back is turned, trouble brews.) Back to the butter dish I read the reviews and the questions regarding the measuring lines. For people wondering about the lines (wide apart vs. closer together) - apparently west coast butter is shorter and wider so the wide apart measurements are tablespoons for "normal" sticks of butter; the closer together lines are tablespoon measurements for the shorter, wider, sticks. ... show more

  • Truly the Honda of butter dishes (because Cadillacs are too expensive)
First, it holds my butter, which is fantastic. Additionally, it has measurements embossed in it, so I can easily cut a 1 Tsp chunk of butter if I want. The rubber feet are nice for keeping it from slipping on the table (though I've never had an issue with non-footed dishes sliding), but also because they raise the dish ever so slightly, they make it easier to pick up. (I know that sounds like a silly comment, but I had a previous dish that was too low, and actually a big pain to pick up from a smooth surface.) It's made of a high-quality plastic, no the cheap kind that'll shatter when you drop it (I've owned several cheaper butter dishes). This is truly the Cadillac of inexpensive butter dishes. (Wait, are Cadillacs reliable and stuff? I've never driven one. Maybe it's more the Honda of butter dishes. My Honda is super-reliable, and though it wasn't the cheapest car on the lot, it wasn't expensive either.) If you want something fancy to put on your table with your fine china, then buy something nicer. But if you want a decent butter dish for a low price, this is the one you want. ... show more

  • ... for years that our lives would be so much better if we just had a butter dish
My husband and I have been joking for years that our lives would be so much better if we just had a butter dish, but actually we were somewhat serious. My son eats buttered toast as if the world is running out of bread, so every morning we were either trying to scrape the cold butter from the refrigerated butter or microwaving the butter in a dish and making a mess. So we chose this butter dish because it had good reviews and while our lives aren't really that much better, our buttering experience is so much smoother. This butter dish does everything it is supposed to do, you can easily see how much butter you have left and you can clean it very easily. Love it! ... show more
