  • Really delivers the goods.
Size: 5 x 120WPC Balanced Input Stage
Yup, this is a 50 pound beast. I am a senior citizen. I needed extra muscle from my senior wife.It delivers in sonic clarity and delivers the power to drive a 5.1 home theater. I purchased a Marantz Cinema 70s to pair with it's preamp section which is outstanding. The Marantz in 5 channel mode sounds less detailed when using it's amp in comparison. Wimpy.. Unfortunately, Outlaw no longer makes preamps. I have highly sufficient vintage JBL 8 ohm speakers, which can be driven to ear splitting levels.. This amp does not clip. I had problems setting up the Marantz and could not get sound from the unit.. Initially I thought it was the Outlaw. Contacted Outlaw, filled out a "ticket" and promptly was contacted by a tech. Turned out there was no problem with either electronic device. Outstanding bang for the buck. And it pairs nicely with the Cinema 70s. ... show more

  • Big upgrade for good speakers running on AVR power.
I don't write many reviews but for this amp I am enjoying it so much that I feel compelled to. I can't compare this amp to others as it's my first audio amplifier, but I can tell you about my personal experience and maybe it will apply to you. I'm sure I'm not the only guy running nice speakers in a home theater on an AVR alone. About 20 years ago I invested in some nice MBQuart Q1002S speakers and a Q series center as well as surrounds. They are 4ohm speakers but the entire time I've had them I've been running them on various Denon AVRs. They spent the last 8 years or so on a Denon 3808ci that I THOUGHT sounded pretty dang good. It could go loud but it always got a bit harsh at very high levels which I always attributed to the titanium tweeters in the Quarts. The Denon 3808ci has pre-outs so getting a nice amp was always a possibility. I just never thought it was needed nor did I want to pay 2k for something I didn't really care about. Ignorance is bliss, right? So then this amp comes along and after reading about it a bit I thought it would be a nice gift for my son-in-law. So my wife and I bought the amp and had two months to kill before christmas. I figure hey, why not stick it in my system and give it a go, right? Curiosity got the better of me. I'll tell you what happened first and then tell you how I feel about the sound. What happened was my son-in-law bought another amp from a friend and this one was no longer needed. I really liked what I heard after about a week of using it, but still didn't really think of it as something I had to have and we decided to box it up and send it back. BIG MISTAKE! When I had the amp and was playing music through it at one point I cranked it so loud that my wife from the other side of the house commented on facebook about how the entire house was vibrating but the sound was clear and clean and she really liked it. After we sent the amp back, the first time I tried to turn the same favorite song of hers up loud she got up and came in and said "OW, THAT HURTS"...the difference in sound was obvious, especially at those high levels, and frankly when my wife notices it that means it's REALLY obvious. She usually doesn't notice or care about things like that. We ended up lasting about a week without the amp, somehow being bery unhappy with the sound that we had been previously been ok with for 8 years! Finally decided to order one of these beauties for ourselves. The Outlaw 5000 is back and the sound is beautiful and we are very happy. Much clearer and warmer than the 3808ci by itself. As I said, my speakers are 4ohm so this amp is now driving all channels at 180wpc!!! If you have 4ohm speakers running on an AVR this amp is a no-brainer. It took a harsher, high-volume and turned it into effortless "sweet" volume. Even though the AVR says it's much higher volume than before, it seemed less "loud" if that makes sense. I never knew exactly what "effortless" meant regarding sound through speakers until I heard it for myself(although I've seen it written many times). I have often heard audiophile guys talk about how it's more important to get high end electronics than worry about the quality of your speakers. Not that your speakers don't matter but if they are driven by low-end electronics they aren't meeting their full potential. I can now speak to that from personal experience. I find myself turning the volume much higher on my AVR now with this amp. My speakers and my ears just love the difference. I was considering new speakers to upgrade but I think for 660.00 shipped this is about as big a bang-for-buck upgrade as I could've ever hoped for. My wife is usually not that enthusiastic about my ideas regarding home-theater upgrades, but she was all-in on this one after hearing the difference for herself. I think the key for us was to have it and get used to it and then have it taken away and having to live without it. Lots of frowning going on once that amp left the system. We just never realized what we were missing. If all you have is your Denon or your Pioneer or your Yamaha or whatever AVR driving your speakers you owe it to yourself to give this amp a listen. For us it completely changed the sound for the much better. ... show more

  • It's a work horse used daily for over a year now.
Size: 5 x 120WPC Balanced Input Stage
Had over a year now. Use it to bi-amp my front towers and run my center channel. I have a cooler on top of it. Rarely see it get to 90f running it pretty hard. 90 is where I have it set for the fans to even come on. Great bang for the buck.

  • UPDATED: Defective product and I have to pay to get it fixed
Size: 7 x 130WPC Balanced Input Stage
Have had the amp in my system for ~3 months when I noticed a hum out of the right surround speaker. The amp is grounded to my receiver so should not be a ground loop. Did a lot of troubleshooting with swapping cables and speakers to determine it is a problem with that single channel. So, my issue is that I paid Outlaw to ship the amp to my house (I know it says free shipping on Amazon but Outlaw has added shipping into the selling price), they sent me a defective amp, and now I have to pay to ship it back to them. That’s pretty ridiculous. Update: Lowering my experience down from 2 stars to 1. Contacted Outlaw to see if they might waive the return shipping since the product was already defective. They indicated that since I only noticed it a few months later that they consider the defect present at purchase and that it "developed" over time. So, no waiving the return shipping (by the way, the warranty does not indicate that a product immediately noticed to be defective would have no return shipping costs). Probably never buy from these guys again. Updated again: Outlaw determined that they would pay for me to ship the product back. After some back and forth on how to troubleshoot the issue, they finally found a problem with the grounding circuit in that one channels amplifier. It was replaced and shipped back. Now back in system and it sounds great! Would give it 5 stars but need to knock off that one star for the warranty shipping policy and the hassle from this defect resolution. ... show more
