  • This tool set is a Godsend!
This tool set is WELL worth the money. The pictures don't do it justice. The quality and size made me realize I purchased the right tool for the job. I struggled for hours upon days trying to get the snap ring retaining clip into the steering knuckle of a 2006 Ford Explorer. I used regular snap-ring pliers from an auto parts store and a flat head screwdriver to get it out, but putting it back in was more of a challenge. When the standard snap-ring pliers wouldn't do it, I tried a pair of long handle bent nose pliers. Those gave me the leverage, but the tines barely made it into the holes of the snap ring. I could just about get the ring closed but as I tried to put it into place...PING!! it went flying. Out of shear frustration I searched for a better tool and came across this set. When the package arrived, I was surprised by the size and weight. I thought no way "pliers" could weigh this much. But when I opened the box, saw the case and opened the case, I KNEW this tool was going to do the job. Picking up the pliers and feeling the quality and weight, I just knew I was going to OWN that snap ring! I didn't even have to change the tines on it. The size of the tool gave me the leverage to squeeze this 4" snap ring with one-handed ease and the locking mechanism on it was such a relief! The ring went in so fast I thought something HAD to be wrong, but everything worked just right. I'm kicking myself for not getting this sooner. ... show more

  • Worked with very stiff 2 1/4" ring on Case 580C backhoe
I had an old snap ring plier set that's like the $15 ones at O'Reily's. I know because I went there to see what they had--not better than I already had. The ones I had were bending the tips without getting a very stiff 2 1/4" ring off the backhoe. I ordered this OTC set. This OTC set worked well--no problem getting the rings off. People here, and the product description, mention this set is for large rings (3 1/2" - 6 1/8" external rings). But the rings I used it on was 2 - 2 1/4" external, and they worked well. I think the missing spec that might be helpful here is how far apart are the tips when they are as close as possible. There are several tips so this can vary slightly. But with the straight ones I used the minimum distance between the center of the tips is just about 5/16"--slightly less. This was for the external set. And I measured the same for the internal set (which I haven't had a use for yet). These also are right about 5/16" minimum tip center-to-center. My only problem I found was when I switched tips the screws to attach the tips had a tendency to cross thread. Use a little care and don't try too hard when screwing the tip screws. When you get them started right they thread in easily. By the way, the tips are 0.12" diameter and are very strong. They didn't bend at all, and my rings required quite a lot of force to compress--I even felt the force with the huge lever handles on this set. ... show more

  • Great value for the money.
Great value for the money. You buy this set of snap ring pliers for half the price you will pay on one of the big name brand tool trucks. OTC has been around a long time and make quality tools. I use these pliers almost every day working on heavy equipment and have no problems. One of the nicest things about this set is that they come in a case. When you work out of a service truck it is nice having stuff in cases so you can store it easier. ... show more

  • Truly Heavy Duty Pliers Set
I rebuild differentials for a living. My Craftsmen professional snap ring pliers are good, but will not open far enough to remove large hub and wheel bearing snap rings on the full floater differentials. I just used them this week to rebuild the hubs on an '06 Silverado 3500 with the 11.5" Ring Gear rear differential. The 1/8" hardened tips in straight, 45 deg., and 90 deg. are hardened, and remove the internal snap rings easily. I really appreciate the locking ratchet mechanism that holds the snap ring compressed so it can be lifted out of the hub. These pliers are made in Tiawan, are spot weld built from stamped heavy guage sheet metal. The welds are of good quality, and the construction is solid. I have no doubt these will last a long time. My opinion for selecting hand tools is that Tiawan built is good quality, but China or India built hand tools are generally of poor quality. I prefer U.S. built tools, but let's face it--- they are hard to find and comparatively very high priced. ... show more

  • They easily weigh a couple pounds apiece
These are a lot larger than I expected. They easily weigh a couple pounds apiece. That being said, they are also very stout and will work well for removing inside and outside snap rings in larger diameters--approx. 2 1/2" to 6" or so. The tip diameters are approximately 1/8th inch (.125"). The different tips are held in place by 2 large screws, and are very strong. One advantage of this is that a person could make tips of his own for specialty uses. I like the feature that locks the snap ring in position--too many times I've almost had a snap ring out, only to have it slip off the tool and have to start over again. However, I gave it 4 stars because the ratchet arm on the lock feature prevents the tool from reaching inside snap rings that are more than 5 or so inches down from the surface--something often encountered when rebuilding transmissions, hydraulic cylinders, or spindles on machine tools etc. It also gets in the way when working in confined spaces. It would be nice if you could remove the ratchet arm when you need to reach rings deep inside a cylinder, etc., then install it again. In fact, I may do this anyway by drilling out the rivet that holds it in, and putting in a nut and screw instead. If it already had this feature, I'd give it a solid 5 stars. ... show more

  • These pliers save a lot of frustration!
I find large snap-rings on many industrial parts. Some of them are nearly impossible to remove or install without a good set of pliers made just for that purpose. I come across some parts that have been chewed up by improvised tooling. One bite from these pliers and they either compress or expand with ease. These pliers are well made and cover a wide range of sizes. My life as an industrial mechanic has become a bit easier because I now have the proper tools to tackle some of these beasts. They are a bit more expensive than the Chinese ones but they work oh-so-much better and are built to last without braking the piggy bank. ... show more
