I recently purchased entry level kayaks and am fairly new to this activity. I had rented kayaks previously and used the "to wear" rental provided PFD. I found these rental PFDs very uncomfortable to wear and paddle in, the crazy things made me feel like a turtle they way they would ride up and hit my chin! This ONYX vest is very, VERY comfortable and easy to paddle in. The front is cut lower and does not ride up to my chin. The lower back is cut higher and fits perfectly for the backrest of my kayak. It seems well constructed and sturdy. I am not a terribly strong swimmer and I feel very safe in this vest. I have two kayaks and purchased a basic keyhole PFD for the second kayak - which is fine for stong, confident swimmers to "take" on the kayak but plan on getting another ONYX vest to offer my kayak guests as well. Probably the one improvement I would make to this vest is a zippered pocket, but the lack of one isn't a deal-breaker for me. Highly recommend this life vest. ... show more

This is a great little life vest for paddling. I wear it for stand up paddle boarding, and it is comfortable, allows for good arm movement, and good ventilation. I used it once while volunteering at a swim race. A swimmer was swimming straight toward me, and I was trying to get his attention thinking he was off course. When he grabbed my board, knocking me off, I realized he was actually in trouble and wanting help. Glad I had this on because that surprised me. The vest did a great job keeping me afloat while I helped the swimmer and got us back to my board. I actually lost the vest recently, so just now ordered another one. The way I lost it was I was paddling by moonlight in calm water looking at the stars. I was using the vest as a pillow. It wasn't attached to me or the board. When I got up to paddle again, the water was choppier so a few moments later, I went to get it to put it on, and whoops, it had fallen off. Being dark, and the current going the other way, I didn't try to look for it. Lesson learned. Always wear it, or at very least attach it to your board! Also, put your name and number in permanent ink. That way, if you do lose it, maybe someone will find it and call you. ... show more

This is a good no-nonsense life vest, quality build, good colors, gives me total freedom of movement in the kayak. The zipper, as others have mentioned, is a bit of a struggle at first, but after a week, it's a breeze to zip. No pockets or pouches to speak of, but overall, a very nice vest.

I've been using the best for over a month. I find that it is comfortable and fits well. As with any vest there is a little bulk in the front but it is not obtrusive. I fell into the cold water from my paddle board in April and was glad I had the best on. I weigh 225 and it kept me afloat while I recovered and got back into the board. These are great! Love the way the back is shorter to allow my actual back to be against the back of the paddleboard seat! They are not too hot since they have ventalation slits all around. Does not interfere at all with my paddling- actually easy to forget you're even wearing it. I chose yellow for visibility since I do kayak in waters with motor boats around.
