  • Absolutely Brilliant
I was unfamiliar with Tom King when I first picked up this book. It was recommended to me by my brother because I was looking for some Kyle Rayner stories to read (I became a fan of the Green Lantern mythos through Geoff Johns' Hal Jordan-focused run, so I missed Kyle's heyday entirely). What I was not prepared for was a complex space epic full of thoughtful geopolitical themes and hard-hitting (and timely) observations on the personal nature and cost of war. I read it all in one sitting because I was riveted from page one. Not only did it instantly convert me to a Kyle fan, but I'm pretty sure it made me a Tom King fan for life. I immediately sought out his "Mister Miracle" series, his "Vision" series (which was great, but not QUITE as great as his DC work, in my opinion), his brief-but-powerful contribution to "Action Comics" #1000, and his ongoing Superman story "Up in the Sky," and have concluded that yep, he's a genius. Or at least, a ridiculously gifted writer. I've got a lot of friends who are superhero/comic fans to varying degrees who don't understand how I could possibly prefer DC over Marvel, and this book - along with stuff like "Watchmen," "All-Star Superman," "Superman: Secret Identity," "Mister Miracle," and countless others - is yet another great example for me to hold up and show them as to why. It's another all-timer that deserves a spot alongside the great DC classics. I should also give a shout out to the art here, too. Barnaby Bagenda's rendering of these alien worlds is gorgeous and perfectly complements King's unique style. I'd recommend this book to any fans of Lantern lore, those who love cosmic superhero stories, or anyone who enjoys extra meaty themes in their sci-fi. If you're into something like "Dune," chances are you'll love this. ... show more

  • A True Mature Sci-Fi Epic
The Omega Men: The End is Here is a story only Tom King could write. He continued his trend of breathing new life into lower tier superheroes with this incredible miniseries. In a nutshell, the series features Kyle Rayner attempting to solve an interplanetary dispute, but he is soon in over his head, as one man trying to solve generations of struggle and violence. However, seeing a Green Lantern overwhelmed is just the beginning. Soon, he is taking sides in the conflict, and the opportunity for a peaceful resolution starts to seem less and less likely. This is a story about war, and its effects on regular people. It's also an allegory for many real-world conflicts fought over oil or religion. These are themes King would further explore in The Sheriff of Babylon and Mister Miracle, which are also definitely worth a read. King gives each of his characters in this impressive supporting cast plenty of depth and pathos, which gives weight to the inevitable violent confrontations. It's one of the best DC Comics of the last decade, a must-read. ... show more

-Winser ... show more

  • Sheesh, break out the cyanide...
I have no idea what the hell I just read. This was one of the most depressing comic series I've read so far. If course there's room for gritty stories in comic books, I mean there was the watchmen, and other "realistic" type stories as well. Although I don't think we need more of that. It is pretty much a cliche if you've been into comics for a while, that "realism" doesn't mean depressing or dark with nothing to inspire. To me, heroes' raison d'être IS to inspire! Even if heroes do commit errors and second guess themselves sometimes, the point of their very existence is to overcome through compassion, justice, equality, honor, wisdom, intelligence & even humor! They really wouldn't be heroes otherwise. And superhero comics should also have a sense of fun and escapism. This Omegamen story has none of that. As another reviewer stated, there is little to NO redeeming qualities to these characters. Even Ryner who's supposed to be the hero in the form of the voice of reason fails miserably. He's just a pawn of pretty much everyone. Not much of an inspiration there. So not much of a hero either. And too bad, because I happen to really like Ryner as a lantern. It's one reason I bought this book; to my chagrin. I'm not saying there isn't room for the social commentary raised in this collection. The author was adroit in how he fleshed out his concerns and ideology in the form of a scifi story. But I simply don't think superhero comics are the format for this. Again, because superheroes, in my interpretation of them, are SUPPOSED to be inspiring -even when they are "making you think". There's nothing like this in Omegamen. I came out of the experience without any sense fun or inspiration, just loathing and disgust. I don't see the point. I don't believe we in the 21st century are completely oblivious to the horrors and needlessness of war, or the fact that revolutionaries eventually turn into the very tyrannical regime they fought to overthrow. So this book is pretty much pointless. And I am very sorry I bought it. I gave it one star because that's the lowest rating and for the effort and artwork. The minus four stars is for the story. Anybody wanna buy my copy?.... :/ ... show more
