  • Omega keeps getting better and better
I used to own a "James Bond" Seamaster Pro. Next to the Rolex Submariner, the SMP was a clear step down. It looked inferior and the materials IMHO were clearly subpar. The bracelet in particular used to scratch easily and just did not look classy. Fast forward to the Seamaster Planet Ocean era. Omega has steadily improved the Seamaster, both inside and out. Beautiful looking watch. Classic dive watch in a modern package. I was set to buy one when it first came out but was in no hurry. Glad I waited. The watch that I am reviewing is the "new" Planet Ocean watch which comes with the new co-axial Calibre 8500 movement, an in-house Omega design noteable for exceptional timekeeping. Other features that I found noteable: -domed sapphire crystal -see-through display caseback -bezel is now charcoal-colored, made of ceramic -large size 45.5mm case -Calibre 8500 with 60hr power reserve (vs. 48hr for C.2500) -excellent bracelet with solid links/end-links and solid clasp. -new version is also more expensive, thicker (~30% more) than the outgoing Planet Ocean -Amazon limited warranty: 2 years. Omega warranty if bought from dealer: 4 years. Summary: I absolutely love this watch. It is a heavy, substantial watch to be sure (think Rolex Sea-Dweller on steroids) but just exudes quality. I should warn you that if your wrist size is less than 7", the 45.5mm XL may be a little much for your wrist. And while not the cheapest price available, I still got a substantial discount buying from Amazon and with Amazon backing the warranty. ... show more

  • Simply superb
When they call this "Big Size", they mean it. It is a substantial watch. It is 45.5mm in diameter and 16.9mm thick. But rather than feeling clunky, it just feels substantial. One caveat: if you wear long sleeve shirts in the office you may have a difficult time getting this to fit under your cuff. I work in a more casual office and don't wear shirt cuffs, so it's not a problem for me. The display back is very unusual on a dive watch, let alone one with a 600M depth rating. But that's one of my favorite features of the watch. I considered getting a Rolex, but all the Submariners have a very plain case back. Rolex movements are excellent, of course, but you'll never see them, and frankly despite their quality they're not much to look at. The Omega movement, by contrast, is a beauty. The calibre 8500 movement is a true in-house movement, and it incorporates what some have called the most significant horological advancement of the last 30 years, the coaxial escapement invented by legendary watch-maker George Daniels. The benefit of this escapement is lower wear, and as a by-product, the longer warranty and longer service interval on the watch. Not only is the movement a fine technical achievement, but it is flat-out beautiful, richly engraved with "Geneva waves" (aka "Geneva stripes" or "côtes de Genève"). You don't have to be a watch lover to be impressed by the craftsmanship of this watch. The styling of this watch is just superb. The ceramic bezel is dark grey, not black. It adds interest and a dash of style without being as bold as the orange bezel model. Speaking of the bezel, it is ceramic, so it is extremely scratch resistant and the color won't fade. Furthermore, it uses Omega's patented "liquid metal" system for the numbers. Rather than being painted on the ceramic, they literally are poured in, so they won't scratch off or fade. One detail that is great is that the date wheel is perfectly matched to the watch face, as opposed to the white background on a Rolex Submariner. I've owned this watch for several months and found it to be comfortable, durable, and a solid time-keeper. I highly recommend it, although I also strongly recommend that you try one on before buying. Watches of this size aren't for everyone. ... show more
