Frequently asked questions

The Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 is an ideal fishing vessel due to its pedal-drive system that allows hands-free fishing, the ultra-stable DoubleU Hull design for enhanced maneuverability, and the ample storage options that make it easy to carry fishing gear and equipment.

The Sportsman PDL 106 makes use of a pedal-drive system that operates through a propeller beneath the hull. By pedaling, similar to riding a bicycle, users can generate movement, freeing up their hands enabling them to focus on fishing.

The Sportsman PDL 106 has a weight capacity of 450 lbs. This includes the weight of the paddler, along with any gear, tackle and other items on board.

Despite having a length of 10 feet 6 inches, the Sportsman PDL 106 weighs just 76 lbs without the pedal drive and 96 lbs with the pedal drive, making it relatively easy to transport for a kayak of its size.

๐Ÿš€ Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The kayak has received mixed reviews but with a majority leaning towards positive. Users find it stable and perfect for navigating skinny waters. Some find it heavy to transport, but most seem to think it's worth the struggle. However, it does have some manufacturing issues that need attention.

Pros

  • ๐Ÿ‘ Perfect size and easy to handle in various water bodies
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Stable and doesn't flip
  • ๐Ÿ‘ The peddle drive and rudder systems work well
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Can carry pets or additional small load

Cons

  • ๐Ÿ’” Seat buckle prone to breaking
  • ๐Ÿ’” Issues with the pdl drive setup
  • ๐Ÿ’” It is heavy and can be difficult to transport
  • ๐Ÿ’” Some essential parts might have to be purchased separately

Should I Buy It?

If you plan on minor trips in relatively calm waters and can handle its weight during transportation, this kayak might be a good choice. However, be ready to deal with a few manufacturing issues and potentially buy additional parts to ensure optimal functionality.

  • I was on the fence!
Color: Ember Camo
I had been debating with myself for a really long time of this would be too small or if it would be too cumbersome to cartop etc! The size is perfect, I can get in to some really skinny water, navigate creeks and I sometimes bring my lil buddy in the back (a 30pound Shiba), and he has a blast exploring islands and stuff with me. The larger versions would be too much to handle for cartop especially with how much I take it out. I also never intend on going out on bigger water like the ocean or great lakes, I hear that the larger ones "track better" for that stuff. I got no problems standing up in the kayak, I've tried bouncing and bobbing and it doesn't flip, it's a real tank! If you buy the kayak, you have to get some wheels for it!! I scraped mine the first day being too eager to get it out. Wilderness systems makes a sweet set, they're a few hundred but they are excellent quality. ... show more

  • Great fishing kayak
Color: Ember Camo
Stable. Peddle drive works great. It is heavy to transport so you have to plan accordingly, but I have zero regrets. It is exactly what I wanted and worth every penny.

  • Great boat but...
Color: Photic Camo
Bought this online due to the closest seller is six hours round trip away thinking "what could go wrong in a production boat". Wrong! Got the boat and tried to seat the pdl unit. Wouldn't seat. Called the distributor first to try to make it right. Great folks and said to just get it on the water and exert a bit of force to get it to seat. Did that and, yes, it seated but with difficulty. Wasn't happy so call Old Town who sent a thin bumper plate to replace the wider bumper plate that is used to hold down the front toe of the pdl, to the floor. Well, that fixed it. Also, Nick over at Navarrekayakfishing.com has some great mods. And yes, I love this kayak! ... show more

  • Over-rated
Color: Photic Camo
People rave about this Kayak and I wanted to offer a different perspective. I have had mine on the water about 6 times over 6 months of ownership. Several challenges. First the seat buckle has broken and I weigh about 200 lbs. While not skinny, I am not an overly big person. The plug at the end of the pdl drive feel out on first use. The jig that holds the pdl drive in place has loosened already. You have to buy aftermarket parts like the Navarre "bolt" to make the rudder work properly. I sold my boat to simplify my life with a low maintenance kayak. I am a little disappointed. ... show more

  • Excellent Kayak
Color: Ember Camo
The media could not be loaded. I simply donโ€™t know where to begin. The quick response on the rudder is beyond amazing. The pedal drive worked more than I expected in the river and at the lake. After a long day of fishing at the lake, I was able to tow my girlfriend back to shore without killing myself in the process. It is an expensive purchase and I plan on buying another for my girlfriend if she sticks around by the time her birthday comes aroundโ€ฆ P.S Jaws will be dropping from fascination when people see you pedaling and sailing through the water. ... show more
