I slid these matte-black Holbrooks onto the bridge of my nose because walking into full midday sun without polarized eye protection feels like volunteering to stare directly into an arc welder. The eyewear market is perpetually divided into two extremes: fragile designer wire frames that bend if you sneeze on them, or insectoid wraparound cycling shades that make you look like you’re about to pedal an eight-stage velodrome time trial just to pick up a sandwich. The Holbrook promised to bridge the gap: classic mid-century American cool armed with ballistic modern lens tech. Settling the squared frame against my cheekbones immediately launched me back to the summer of 1997: sitting in the bleachers at an outdoor dirt track demolition derby. My older brother was leaning against the chain-link fence wearing a pair of Oakley Frogskins, holding a frosty plastic cup of soda, and exuding that effortless, invincible late-90s swagger. The Holbrook takes that exact retro Americana DNA, squares off the orbit geometry, and replaces delicate vintage acetate with Oakley’s proprietary O Matter composite. The frames are ridiculously lightweight—barely registering on your face—yet they possess that durable, slightly flexible structural tension that laughs off being sat on or dropped onto gravel. The dual metal rivet accents on the front corners and the squared metal "O" emblems on the temples add just enough industrial flair without screaming for attention. After inspecting the sunglasses there appeared to be some white paint on the frame. I was unable to get the paint off and nearly damaged the original flat black finish.
