  • A Love/Hate Affair
In some aspects, these IEMs are brilliant; in others they need a LOT more development to make them even a 4-star product. Many of the CONs I list later are really PITAs, which is disturbing, because these IEMs have some great potential! PROs: * These are the first IEMs I've used whose supplied tips provide a good seal (which is CRUCIAL when using IEMs). I normally have to use SpinFit tips to get a good seal. * The available personalization software (Nura) is pretty good. You can use it to set up how you want these earphones to work. (More on this in the CONs section below.) * The adjustable noise cancellation works well. * The hearing customization is brilliant, and is the major selling point for these earphones. Use these with EQ and you can dial-in perfect sound. (While I was an audio engineer, I prefer a "fun" sound feel for personal listening.) * The in-ear fit and weight is very good. I don't have any problem with them falling out. CONs: * The supplied carrying/storage pouch is pitiful. I recommend getting one of these to protect the product - https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D2D71M2 - Use the supplied pouch to store the "hard-wire" connection cable. * [Updated Oct. 25/2021 - The battery life for these can be abysmal. My experience using manual on/off mode has the battery going dead within a couple of days! So, in manual mode, you won't just be able to pick these up and use them whenever you want! I have found that the battery life is MUCH better if you use the AUTO off/on mode!! (Which works well for me.) Due to work demands, I hadn't used these in several weeks. I chuckled to myself when I picked the Nuras up today expecting them to be DOA. They came on and announced they were at 50% charge - amazing since when I last used them they were at 70% charge! Huzzah!] * The ability to control these IEMs thru touch is a great idea, BUT the sensitivity of the touch controls is soooo 'finicky', that using these can sometimes be a PITA. * The connector module in the center of the head cable can be uncomfortable if you use these while lying down on your back, even on a pillow. YMMV * When using these in "hard-wired" mode (instead of Bluetooth), the connector module sometimes gets loose enough that they stop working. The connector has a magnetic coupling, and there are about 8 contact points. So, if you even slightly move your head or body, you may have to remove and reattach the connection. [Updated Oct. 25/2021 I don't know if this is a bug or not, but I have found that several of the features do NOT work when the Nuras are NOT being used in BT mode!] Another PITA. * The proprietary charging cable can be a problem. If you lose it, or it gets damaged, you're boned. * Charging these (which may a frequent event) can be problematic. (Where I live has a fairly regular humidity level of 60%.) On the first attempt, even though they're supposedly fully charged, they sometimes lie. You have to disconnect them from the charging cable for a bit, and then charge them again. Another PITA. I'm concerned that with all of these bare contact points, any kind of 'corrosion' thru use is just going to worsen this connection problem. * The adjustable "immersion" setting is another brilliant idea to improve listening, BUT using it is problematic. I'll need to explain this. The amount of "immersion" can be adjusted thru the Nura app to whatever degree you want. BUT, using the touch controls on the earphones themselves to change the immersion mode needs work. If I was going to design this, I would have the immersion "off" go to whatever the minimum setting that has been chosen by the USER in the app. Likewise, I would have the immersion "on" go to whatever the maximum setting the USER has chosen in the app. In actual use, this is NOT what happens. Immersion "off" seems to always go to a mid-range setting of the APP's choosing, while the immersion "on" seems to vary at times, from either the last "on" usage OR to maximum immersion. Strange. Long story short - IF you can put up with all the shortcomings, you will like these IEMs. I think ALL of these problems (other than the loopy connector issues) could be fixed with software revisions. If that happens, and usage improves, I will try to update this review. ... show more

  • Glitchy... but sound VERY good
UPDATE: Exceptional sound - they have achieved great sound-stage and separation given these are in-ear. Very impressive, and base can be fun (but not bass-head style). Try: - "Suburbia" by Pet Shop Boys... detail, thump, clean electronica and vocal. Great sound. - "Color to the Moon" by Allan Taylor... the bass is strong, instruments clear and vocal is clean. - "These Boots Are Made For Walking" by the lovely Emilie-Claire Barlow... comes across like a live, in-room performance, and Emilie-Claire's voice makes the hair on your neck stand up. If you're a red blooded man, at least. - Classical tracks (crucially important for me) are clear and spacious, with chamber music that's sharp and fresh, full orchestra like 1812 and Capricio Italien nicely separated with tied-in bass undertones, and Mahler's 5th which I think challenges most 'phones (beyond just noise) with the shear amount of sound, they handle it well even with the simultaneous rushes of bass and treble. His No. 2 is awesome on these buds. Be prepared to adjust EQ if you want to get the most out of these across genres and even tracks. Still having trouble with touch functionality but I do believe these issues will be fixed with SW updates. Definitely consider and try these. I use different tips than those provided (rubber with two flanges and deep/long so the little mesh screens might not end up in my ear!) and it makes them even better, and yes, you can set up profiles with your own tips (or at least I did). ORIGINAL: Not sure they are ready for prime time - with very bad habits like going into sleep mode mid-use, profile set-up failing because phones can't sense the bud is in the ear (when it is), and button assignments stopping operation for no reason. But between these unacceptable oddities they sound is very good - surprisingly close to big brother Nuraphones (which I also have). The strange little stick-on screens for the in-ear microphones that come off too easily (and I assume will end up stuck in my ear) are a VERY silly idea. But, if you are looking for in-ear only 'phones and to save the $ of the full Nuraphones (which are better, but not hugely), you should consider these - assuming they fix the odd behaviors they have at first release, and you can handle the risk of the tiny microphone screens coming off inside your ear. Will update after more use. ... show more

  • Excellent Listening in Noisy Environments
I received these NuraLoop noise-canceling earbuds as a gift and I am impressed with the technology. Each earbud maps itself to suit your individual R & L hearing profile using some sort of sonic algorithm echo process -- cool. I am most impressed with the active noise-canceling feature, which is very effective at obliterating outside sounds by maybe 90%. The sound fidelity is excellent while the noise-canceling is activated. When the noise-canceling is deactivated, external noises drown out whatever you're listening to (external sounds are amplified through the ear buds). Battery life is very good depending on ambient noise -- power is required to 'cancel' external sounds, so the louder the environment the more juice is required to cancel it. A disembodied 'female voice' greets you by name and tells you % battery life remaining when you insert both ear buds -- and 'she' advises when battery % is getting low. In ordinary listening situations I get well over 10 hours. Each bud has its own curved ear 'hook' that's bendable to suit your ear shape and size. These NuraLoop buds are comfortable to wear for many hours without slipping off. I don't run (unless someone is chasing me), but I imagine the NuraLoop would work well for joggers. I deducted one star for a couple minor complaints: The proprietary charging cord is only 12-inches long making it awkward to plug in -- and no wall charger is included(!). Both ear buds must be in your ears snugly to operate (if one or both ear bud seal is loose 'she' will advise you to tighten the ear buds or try a different sized rubber tip). I prefer talking on my phone using just one ear plug, but this isn't possible with the NuraLoop. Both ear buds must be sealed tight. Overall, I am very happy with the NuraLoop and the noise-canceling is awesome. ... show more
