Haven't owned a Nokia phone since early 2000, but have been waiting for this 5.4 ever since it was announced. I must admit, I am not disappointed. The blue color looks great when the light reflects on it. It feels great while holding it in hand as it is light but sturdy in the same time. Installing and migrating the apps from my previous phone was a breeze. No lags at all while using the phone and browsing and switching through the apps. Fingerprint reader works well, not sure why other reviewers state otherwise. The screen is bright, with nice contrasts. I keep the "Night Light" setting ON all the time just like on my previous phone. Sound is crisp and appreciate the fact that it comes with 3.5 audio jack and its own headset. I would have preferred the speaker be placed in such a way that faces the user (like on my previous Pixel 3XL that I managed to crack the screen)... but "hey", that's not a deal breaker.. Camera quality is decent, not at the Google Pixel level though. By now, Nokia announced the new X20, that may be a better option.. ... show more

    • phone doesn't work after 8 weeks! CORRRECTION: something going on with the network itself.
Phone turned off and won't turn back on, doesn't charge/work after 8 weeks! i bought 2. no good at all. CORRECTION: next day phone suddenly on...fully charged, didn't any of the attempted calls that happened. but is working great ever since. I suspect it was more a network/update issue than anything, callers were getting the message i was disconnected and phone would not turn on. Then the next day i began to troubleshoot, hit the fingerprint sensor 1 time and it was on and working. ... show more

Great phone for the price. A few things I wish it had that it doesn't need but would make it a 5 star phone to me. Comes with Android 10 currently. I expect Android 11 to not count against the 2 system upgrades, and if it does, might not ever buy another Nokia. However, true all Android manufacturers still stink as far as this goes. Will see how Nokia does, if they meet my expectations or not but they won't be worse than Motorola anyway. The phone lacks 5GHz wifi and wifi ac, always on display is half baked as tap or blink on, a loud and obnoxious startup sound that can't be disabled in settings, and it doesn't need an Android assistant dedicated button (would be nice to repurpose that). One thing I'm spoiled with on Samsung phones is an amazing power save mode that can easily double battery life at a minimum. This phone only has the standard Android one. Android 10 introduces new navigation system. If you hate is as I do, you can switch back to the 3 button on screen navigation from system gesture settings. A test photo turned out well. I like the picture quality. Photo people I don't understand, so flame on if you think it stinks, and go spend more to get a camera you think looks good. This one passes for me and I don't like stinky looking photos. The screen looks nice, performance seems good, plenty of space and sd card makes it very roomy. There's a lot to like and not much missing for the price. Impressed at the cost with what you get but a few little things more would have made it absolutely amazing. I recommend since other manufacturers at this price or less brand new are not as good as this. Example, Moto does updates so poorly and those are something you need to have. Update 1: I see Nokia took a nosedive on OS upgrades. The 5.4 currently has no Android 11 upgrade in sight and Nokia posted 2021 schedule without it. Considering they are only just now getting Android 11 out to their existing devices -which is a long delay - I'm not expecting it to show up until sometime in 2022 unless they somehow fix their schedule. If their schedule is that broken, it will be interesting to see how they treat their customers as far as OS upgrades go once Jan 2024 passes. The 5.4 is an Android 11 ready device so it should in reality be getting it soon but Android 12 may be out before it even gets Android 11. That means the current OS might become two versions behind this year alone. Still, four stars is about right. It is at least roughly getting monthly security updates and only a lot of time will tell how the OS upgrades really go. Update 2: Nokia wised up and included the 5.4 on their revised Android 11 schedule and it should be soon. They at least made a proper correction of their schedule. Not that their schedule is great but its an improvement for the 5.4 at this time. ... show more

There is a lot to like about this phone and a few things to dislike. My #1 complaint (what finally drove me to actually write this review, because it's a *big deal*) is that IT IS WAY TOO EASY to accidentally dial 911. And honestly I think it might just dial 911 whenever it wants to, all by itself. "I" have done it 3 times in the last 6 weeks and I feel like the next time i'm gonna get issued a felony or whatever for wasting their time. I never even know it happened until they call back and say they received a call from me and ask if I'm having an emergency. The "emergency call" button is RIGHT NEXT TO all the other buttons you use regularly. AND it's STILL in that location when your screen is locked. Obviously, such a button can override a screen lock. So stick in in your pocket and your loose change might dial the paramedics for you. It's ridiculous. Once it even dialed when i threw the phone onto the seat of my car and walked away because apparently my thumb 'brushed the button' when I tossed it. The most recent time (this morning), I was standing at the washing machine doing laundry. Go figure. Totally unacceptable IMO. I don't know how Nokia got away with RELEASING a device that will do this, let alone designing it in the first place. The 'emergency' button should be significantly distant from all the others you regularly click. I should have returned this the moment I noticed that was likely to be a problem for me, but I didn't, and now I'm very much regretting it. Unrelated to the 911 issue, my #2 complaint about this phone (as long as mine isn't defective) is that the speaker is not very loud. It does well enough to not whine (for the price point) when playing music, but anything with spoken word (audio books or phone calls on speaker, for me) I may as well not even have it on..... So far so good with this device for its price. Screen and cameras work as expected by me, honestly. I have been a Nokia user for over two decades and they have never let me down when it comes to functionality. One thing I do find as a downgrade from my Nokia 5 (Which is a long way, considering it was launched in 2017) is this phone does not support 5Ghz wifi connections. Also, some Android 10 features, such as automatic shut down, are nowhere to be found in this device. Speed is decent, I have over 50 apps installed, and it is working perfectly. Storage is good. The phone came with a Screen protector preinstalled (which I pretend to replace with a Hydrogel protector as soon as they become available for this device) which is really good because it saved me from the hassle of installing it, which is always super annoying and time-consuming. The screen protector is not tempered glass, is just a regular thingy to avoid scratches or whatever. The device became available earlier than expected and arrived before the estimated date, which made me extremely happy. When I turned on my device it was on a 64% battery and it lasted me about 17 hours, so I am not sure about the 48 hours they claim, I will have to update this aspect if that isn't as they claim. The phone needs to be updated as you turn it on, which I don't find practical, since it's an Android One phone. I just hope that the update I had to perform is not part of the ones I am supposed to get in my two years of software updates. Not having the navigation keys has been difficult to get used to, even though you can activate them in gestures, I didn't like them that way. Splitting screen became more complicated or less-hassle-free. In the past you were able to disable startup sound, that's not the case anymore, even though is not as loud as it used to be, it's still annoying. Downside: AMAZON S*%#s. It is advertised by the seller (Amazon Services LLC) that the phone comes with a Jelly Case IN THE BOX, which I did not receive, and when I contacted them over it they called me ignorant saying I should've ordered it separately (even though it is advertised as IN THE BOX) because I was given the option (which is not true since I preordered the item and when you preorder, you can't choose anything else even if you wanted to), so yeah, I'm left with an unprotected phone for a while as I wait for my case I bought from eBay (since I will not be purchasing from amazon anymore) gets here. ****Will update with photos with the different cameras and sets.*** ... show more

    • Repeated, Spurious 9-1-1 calls
I was happy with this phone and initially would have reviewed it highly. There was a problem where the power switch was excessively 'bouncy' and would trigger the camera when I tried to lock the phone, but I could just disable that shortcut, no harm done Then came the February 2022 update. Since that update my phone has made one or more 9-1-1 calls PER WEEK. This is completely unacceptable. It's enough I'm looking for a new phone to buy. Since that update, a feature to dial 9-1-1 when the power button was triple-tapped was added. This might have been fine except, as I said, the button is bouncy, and will register multiple 'taps' for a single push. There is no way to disable this feature. HMD technical support was completely useless. They told me to 'be careful not to push the button more than once' and then closed my ticket. Given that I am ONLY pushing the button once and the flaw exists in the button, and I told them so and asked if I could get the phone repaired or exchange it, this is a completely unacceptable answer. Do not buy this phone, or at least wait until they fix this issue to do so. But be prepared for completely useless support. ... show more

I'm giving this phone five stars because it is excellent given its price range. If I had paid a flagship price for it, I would have been disappointed and given it three stars at best. But seriously, it provides everything you really need, and leaves you with an extra three or four hundred bucks in your pocket!! What's not to love? I bought this phone mostly for the two specs that I find most important: 128 GB of storage, and the 4000 mAh battery. I'm an app hoarder, and love downloading every app that I might possibly ever want. This phone lets me do that and just swallows them up like a cavern. Great! And the battery is incredible. I only plug it in every other night when I go to bed. I could probably go three days if I had to. Other than that, it's pretty much what you expect from a midrange phone: decent speed, decent screen, decent sound, decent camera, nothing special. Phone calls are fine. The near-stock Android and lack of bloatware is great, and the headphone jack is the cherry on top. The purple (sorry, "dusk") color is is cool, but you only see it if the phone is upside down, since the bezels are practically non-existent. It came with the navigation buttons turned off by default. But they were easy enough to turn on. Bottom line: if app storage and battery life are your thing, and you want to save some bucks, this is the phone for you. ... show more

    • Is this REALLY a Nokia?
A year in and I'm writing a review-- THAT's how much my frustration and disappointment continue to mount daily. Slow. Pokey. Glitchy. Random lock-ups that are turning into a daily occurrence. A microphone that will register your voice only if your face is virtually eating the phone. The speaker is little better. The side button constantly dials 911 when all I want to do is turn off the display (super touchy). And how can I forget the display, which, from Day 1, has struggled to register finger presses, and which issue has only gotten progressively worse. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NOKIA I KNEW AND LOVED??? Oh, how far they have fallen from their heyday. For the money, one can do far better. I'll be buying something else soon. Yes, after only a year. Ugghhhhhh. ... show more
