  • Buy this cooler. Best in design, no question.
I had to replace a big cooler master cooler that would not stay seated properly on the chip properly (intel 4770) when the case was upright. It was so big its weight would pull it slightly off the chip face. It also had trouble fitting into the case and the front fan rested on the memory. It was a bad situation. I took it off and put it back a couple times to make sure it was installed properly but was just a clumsy design. When the case was laying down it work OK and cooled OK but it was not going to work for me. I bought this unit because of the reviews here. The directions are excellent, you can actually read them and the photos are clear and unambiguous, unlike other makers where you look at them with a magnifying glass and say huh? These were printed on quality magazine paper with color images. Not that cheap transparent foreign paper that has print on both sides in 20 languages. This was an EASY install. It is thinner than the cooler master and fit perfectly not interfering with anything. The fans are very nice and have 4 PINS!!! for PWM control (I bought the second fan) and they plug into the motherboard so you can smartly control them via software. The clips look cheap but hold the fan very firmly in place and are easy to take off and install. The hardware is not just thrown in a bag, it is boxed and separated by cpu maker...installing it on an intel?...you can just toss the amd box or visa versa and you have just what you need along with the proper instructions. It includes splitter cables and extensions when you get the spare fan as well as a special cable to lower peak rpm for noise if you should need it but these are well engineered fans and I doubt you need this. Performance... it is as good if not better than the much bigger cooler master. With both fans it has no problem keeping my machine where it needs to be. Don't expect liquid cooling performance but for a top of the line air cooler that is very quiet this is the part you want. Excellent design and very well made, with thoughtful instructions and packaging. I have not seen this in ANY other maker. The only negative I have with the is that the poopie color choice. It is not the prettiest thing in my case and there are no red or blue led lights but this thing installs, fits and works so well I don't care what it looks like. My next build will be all noctua, maybe the brown will grow on me. You will not regret this purchase. ... show more

  • Excellent design. Very quiet; Almost as effective as a water cooler.
I bought this and later added a second fan to create a push-pull arrangment. I've read you can get another three degrees of cooling from the extra fan, but for me it was about five C cooler under heavy load when I added the second fan. It's hard to replace the cooling effectiveness of water coolers, but they're noisy, more expensive and there's always the risk of leaks. I found that with this one, I could take an FX 8350 from 4.0 Ghz to 4.4 under 100% load on all 8 cores for an hour. That's the RAM-intensive torture test in Prime95. Even with voltage jacked up considerably to feed 16Gb of RAM, it ran for an hour at 61C. Under shorter bursts it will hold down 4.6 Ghz at full load, but in less than a minute you're creeping over 65C. That's a lot more load than playing a video of course, and a lot more load than the Windows comprehensive memory test, but running them full out at 100% is really how you find out if an overclock can be pushed into a failure. Designed in Austria, built in Taiwan, there's no "made in China" feel to this product. If you get a sense of satisfaction from things that are well designed you'll like this. They've done everything they can to make it hard to fail. This product ships with the little rubber corner guards to block the transmission of vibration. Comes with a handy wiring extender, should you need it, enclosed in a sleeve. Also comes with easy snap on clips to attach the fan to the heat sink and a second set of clips in case you decide to add a second fan. They send along some hefty brackets to reinforce it from the back of the motherboard. On an AMD motherboard you can do it all from above the board since AMD boards usually come with backplates built in. For Intel you'll probably need to take out your MB to install the brace on the back. You'll want to do that. This is a lot of weight to hang on a chip socket soldered to a thin fiberglass board. Again, they don't want you to fail, so they make it very clear which parts go with which type of board. Bearings are milled out of brass with a CNC machine. Thus the 6-year warranty and the quiet. Very artful engineering on the fan blades to dampen resonance and break down the turbulance that causes sound. The box says the motor is designed to suppress any start-up hum and I think they got that right too. Mine runs at about 750 rpm under normal load using the standard PWM header on my motherboard for the CPU and it goes up to about 1400 when all 8 cores are maxed out at 100% as described above. I did learn that my case itself needs better ventilation to take full advantage of these fans, so I'll be adding a port. I've heard of people overcoming the water cooling noise problem using two Noctua fans from this heatsink to replace the stock fans on a Corsair h100i. If I ever try to take my CPU any higher, that's probably what I'll try. 4.4 is really all I need though, if that. Worth every penny in my book. ... show more
