  • Size matters!
Didn't really see any good comparisons in size to something I was wanting to melt down so here is what I was looking for in case anyone else is curious. The #3 (4kg) is plenty big to fit a whole 12 oz. Alluminum pop can. Not sure how many it will hold melted down yet... that will be in an update to this. Update: I lost count on how many melted cans it would hold but quite a few! I'm going to say more than 50! I like others it seems have found the tongs that come with this not really worth using, they cracked on the second use (even after preheating) Maybe I didn't let it heat up enough? even After cracking they were still semi usable but not for carrying or holding anything heavy for sure as the end would just bend open. After cracking i only used them to add stuff to the crucible. Hope this helps anyone. ... show more

  • Crap. Cheap crap.
Let's put it bluntly. I cast aluminum and brass, 2 very common metals with relatively low melts points. I did not make it through a single one hour casting session before the tongs got so pliable I had the basically reforge and quench them before I was able to lift my 2nd crucible from the foundry. I have a dare bones basic propane foundry, nothing special. A pair of channel lock pliers has served me better to this point than these crap tongs. The crucible I haven't tried yet because the general composition of the thing is suspect and to my eye sub par. My advice is don't waste your money and invest in better equipment. I don't like giving crap reviews for products but I simply have nothing nice to say about this product. ... show more

  • Works very well.
I have used this crucible only 2 times. Once in a wood fire I which I had it hot enough to melt cans. Once using coal as a fuel in my forge. I melted down a garbage can full of cans. The crucible performed perfectly. I heated up the crucible slowly, and as even as I could. The one review stating it broke on first use could have been due to thermal shock. This is graphite and clay, and should be heated gradually and evenly. I did not read that in the product description, but I have over a decade of professional foundry experience so please take my word as a professional. I expect to get many uses, and if it should fail prematurely and not due to negligence, I will reflect that in an update. As of now, two thumbs up! ... show more

  • Tongs leave something to be desired
The crucible is great and I would highly recommend it to anyone needing something this size. The tongs however, leave something to be desired. They're thin to the point of being dainty. After two uses, they've bent to the point where they don't close all the way. I'm a bit concerned that continued use will result in spilling metal on my shoes. ... show more

  • Crucible is good so far, tongs are bad
I've melted aluminum twice and bronze twice so far. The crucible is looking good with no issues. The tongs are already toast. They survived the first two pours. After the third pour they would not close all the way. After the fourth pour the tongs were completely useless. I have to push the handles all the way together before I can get them to pinch, and it's questionable if they could pick up a crucible with metal in it. My advice is to get this set and only use the tongs for digging the sand or putting your castings in water. Don't get them too hot. ... show more

  • Crucible pictured in listing is not what ships
Haven't fired the crucible yet, but as the photo shows, what you get is far rougher than what the product listing shows. I can't tell whether the indentation on the inside rim near where the pouring spout should be is supposed to be the spout, or just another defect in an overall crude manufacture.

  • Garbage
The media could not be loaded. This stuff looks nicer in the pictures. The tongs are worthless and the crucible looks just as flimsy. Luckily it wasn't very expensive. Buy something better.

  • Not a good buy
Got the product and seasoned it according to directions. Used it for copper smelting and it actually leaked copper out of the bottom. Tongs are crap, I ended up hammering the river tighter because they were so lose and rebending them to work. Apparently quality control missed this one....
