A while back I researched night vision goggles, thinking I needed some as fantastic as the ones you see on TV. Given my budget constraints and the cost of the night vision goggles you see on TV shows, it appears this purchase was not essential to my blissful existence, but it sure made me jump at the chance to audition these lower-cost goggles with recording capacity. These were fun to try out. Charged up fully and took them out while walking the dog at night on a street that's mostly dark with streetlights in between the places where you need night vision goggles. OPERATING THE GOGGLES - YUP, LOOKING INTO THE WRONG END OF THE GOGGLES OVER HERE Reading the instructions can be helpful (which doesn't mean I always do, but I did this time). If you've owned binoculars, you'd instinctively want to look into the two-cylinder end, wouldn't you? OK, thanks. Glad I'm not alone there. But hey, you have a cool, big-ish video screen to watch instead - even better! You have six feature buttons and one big power button in the middle. As someone with perpetual foggy-brain, I may end up making a cheat sheet or use glow in the dark paint pen for the six buttons, as this was really the only challenge other than not getting herded by my dog and/or not getting jumped in the dark shadows. Through trial and error, I managed to get some cool video and some cool stills. Most people will probably manage all of this much better with the goggles than I did, but we are all sleep-deprived here since the dog has decided to make a temporary return to her adolescent ways. Children will probably memorize the buttons before you have it fully unpacked. PICTURE AND COLOR Truly impressed! The sensors and IR quality were so much better than I ever anticipated. Colors were great, and detail level was very good. My experience was that this works best on close-range (like 5 - 20 feet) items for best detail, best color, and best image, so if you're hunting salamanders in the dark - win. BUILD These are built very well. Ashamed to say I dropped them on the sidewalk before we even had them up and running for first use, and zero issues. They'll survive your kids and all adventures they dream up for their new tech. ZOOM May take a little patience (and will work better if you don't have a dog yanking on one arm with a leash), but has a great quality on zoom once you're locked in. NIGHT VISION Amazing - can't believe you can get this much IR camera at this low price. VALUE FOR THE MONEY My earlier search for tech of this nature suggested I'd be spending at least 5-10 times this much for a set of basic "entry level" night vision goggles, so the fact you can record, take stills, and see so much with an affordable piece of tech like this is fantastic. Also COMES with an SD card, so holy cow, even better! Do note that the instructions (which some of us read now and then) recommend some specifics for your SD cards, so read that before you order an additional card. OVERALL These are the goggles you won't mind letting the kids/grandkids use. Good quality, but not so expensive the kids never get to go exploring. Great find, and lots of fun to be had here!

They are ok, I was disappointed that the night vision was pointless since the viewing screen is so light up, it's almost blinding and anyone/thing could see you from a mile away. Build quality is good.

The only night vision device I have had prior to this was a Soviet surplus Gen 1 analog monocular from the '90s. This scope blows that primitive cyclops out of the water. I know Gen 3 and 4 analog devices are the cat's meow of night vision, but unless you are on a life-or-death armed mission or won the lottery recently, it's hard to justify the price tags typically carried by such devices. For mundane suburban usage (e.g., checking to see what kind of animal is making those noises in the backyard without spooking it with a flashlight), this digital scope should be able scratch most people's night vision itch. Firstly, this is not really a pair of binoculars, though it's made to look like one. There is a single functional objective lens, and a single 'ocular' LCD display, so it is by any definition a monocular. What looks like a second "objective lens" on the right is an infrared illuminator, which does emit some visible red light when activated. There are two fully passive modes, one which amplifies ambient light of all wavelengths, producing a color image of surprising quality (which analog devices cannot do), the other limiting the amplification to longer wavelengths only, near the infrared spectrum, which increases brightness and resolution somewhat at the expense of color. If there isn't sufficient ambient light to support the passive modes (which are already way more sensitive than my Gen 1 analog antique), the IR illuminator is there to help, with 4 brightness settings. These are especially useful if you are trying to see something far away using the digital zoom. At the brighter settings, the illuminator can light up objects hundreds of yards away. If there is one nit I could pick, it's that this scope doesn't have an unmagnified mode. When I scanned around my backyard as crepuscular twilight gave way to inky darkness, I seldom had the urge to zoom in from the default setting, which the scope can do up to a point, but frequently wished that I can zoom out, which it can't. However, I knew this going in, so it is not a cause for complaint.

These work very good. Is cool to watch animals at night. We were viewing raccoons the other night. Great video and pictures in daytime or night. More of nice vision viewer than goggles. Easy to use.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: This is a night vision viewer, not so much a binocular. There is a viewing screen on one side and 2 round projections on the other side. One is the lens, the other is an infared flashlight. The lens has a focusing ring on it. Magnification can be adjusted from none to 6X. Infared night vision can be adjusted from none to 4. Intensity level 1 is generally good for night viewing, 4 gives a very pronounced hot spot in the image. A memory card is included. photos or videos can be recorded and saved to the memory card. It takes a few hours to charge the battery. This is a nice basic, no frills unit.

To be fair, I am not going to bash this thing for being something it isn't supposed to be which is a serious NV device. I've got a few points of comparison to use in this review, security cameras with NV capabilities and my trusty PVS7 Gen2+ analog NVGs along with another budget NV device. I'm not new to the NVG game, but I use is so seldom I haven't worried to much about getting the latest and greatest gear even while I keep pace with what is out there. I just want to put that out there for context and why, at the outset, I refer to this unit as a toy. The unit charges up pretty quickly on the supplied USB-C cable, the strap could be useful for hanging the thing around your neck. Unlike the other budget set, this unit does not have a case. Like most guys, I didn't bother reading the instructions before playing with the device. Unlike it's close competitor, the controls were not so intuitive and it took a bit of fumbling around to figure out how to change some of the modes and get the thing to do what I wanted. I did read the instructions, eventually, because I wanted to get the time/date correct. Let's get to what you're actually going to care about, the image. Between 2 and 50 yards on NV, you can get a pretty crisp image When I say crisp, objects are identifiable with good lines, animals and people are recognizable as animals and people, but for positive identification, keep it within 25 yards. One issue with this unit is the focus dial, it is quite stiff and you will find yourself using it constantly unless you are looking at a fixed area and range. When surveying an area, this will let you know that something or someone is out there, but aside from saying "deer", "coyote", "person", you're not going to know anything more. Now we get into issues with digital NV devices. If you are watching something with these and it is moving at more than a walk, you're going to get significant blur. With budget digital NV, the refresh rate cannot keep pace with movement, either at the target or from the viewer. This is where I keep this unit in "toy" status. It isn't bad for static close-range observation, but when movement is involved, the performance just isn't there. The unit has a 1/4" mount for a tripod, and putting this on a ball-head tripod helped with stabilization and figuring out how close/far I wanted this from my eyes. Moving along with performance, when the NV mode is engaged, the IR illuminator comes on which, at 20-50 yards, isn't bad but it doesn't have the power to throw the light and lacks the flood for wider illumination. At close range, the I have to say, and this is something I found with the competitor as well, the viewscreen irritates me. It is half the size of my phone screen and I just can't quite figure out where my face is supposed to be in relation to the screen. With my PVS7's, the image is right up at the eyeball; with the NV scopes, same thing, and with this unit, the screen is small enough and the unit is bulky enough that I want to bring it up like binoculars, but that just doesn't work. Holding this thing at the best viewing distance from your face just seems unnatural. Putting the unit on a tripod helps with this, but the viewscreen bugs me. Overall, this isn't a bad toy. Don't think this is for any serious application, but if you just want to see into the dark around your campsite or backyard, this is good fun. Just be careful, when you start into NODs, it can get stupidly expensive really fast as you want to up your game.
