This sealer works very well and their customer service is amazing. I've had it for 3 years and I used it a LOT. It is a trusty workhorse. Recently, it stopped pulling a vacuum. I contacted Nesco and asked for advice on troubleshooting the problem. They thought it was the sealing gaskets, so they sent me replacements for FREE. I was well past the warranty period and they didn't even ask when I bought the unit. They just sent me the gaskets. Now, it works like new. I highly recommend this sealer. This Nesco vacuum sealer works very well and is simple to use. It seals quickly and creates a strong seal, which is great for food storage and meal prep. I like the viewing lid because it lets you see exactly what’s happening during sealing, and the controls are straightforward without being complicated. It handles both dry and moist foods well, and the included bags are a nice starter bonus. The size is compact enough to store easily while still feeling sturdy when in use.     • Not so great for wet foods

I really wanted to like this unit. It has great reviews and it's well built. But... Maybe this is a problem with all vacuum sealers? I don't know as it's my first unit. But if there is ANY moisture on the food in the bag it JUST. WON'T. SEAL. The suction is quite powerful, and once the moisture gets pulled upwards inside the bag towards the unit, past the heating element, you're done for. No seal. Now, moisture WILL get pulled upwards, and that's why there's a drip tray north of the heating element. [And this tray, BTW, is NOT removable for cleaning. Think chicken juice. Uh, no.] I tried to mitigate with every option available on the unit. Heating the sealing strip past the 'wet' setting, all the way to double seal. Longest sealing time available. I set the vacuum pressure to the gentle setting, no luck. All of the above using vacuum/seal, double seal, and then manually re-sealing a second time. Nope, not even close. The only option left (and yes, this unit has several options) was to manually "Pulse Vacuum". So basically you hold the button down, it manually vacuums and stops when you release, then you manually seal. It works, but you have to be fast on the draw. Once you see that fluid pulling up you only have a split second to stop or it's too late. I'll speak to Customer Service in case this unit isn't heating to specs, but since it seals perfectly on a dry bag, I'm not hopeful. I'll edit this review if something changes. Edited post call to customer service: high moisture content sealing issues are a thing, and not really a defect. The (very pleasant) rep suggested two work-arounds: flash freezing for 20 minutes, or inserting a paper towel into the bag before sealing. So that's a thing to consider when purchasing a vacuum sealer I guess. Edited after 3 months of use: I've raised this unit to 4 stars, with my only concern being the drip tray not being removable for cleaning. As vacuum sealers go, it's excellent. My initial gripe with high moisture content foods is a generic issue, and doesn't reflect on this unit in any negative way. Good value for your money! ... show more

    • A really great vacuum sealer

When my old Food Saver Vacuum Sealer finally stopped working after several years, I started researching a suitible replacement. I ran across this NESCO Deluxe Food VS-12 Vacuum Sealer. It had a great number of very good reviews, so I decided to try it instead of a new Food Saver brand. So far, it has lived up to its' reputation. I have been impressed with it's performance. Yes, it is made in China, but what isn't anymore? It is well built and has the feel of quality. I have used it only for dry goods and meats, but it has always performed well. It may take a tad longer to heat seal than my old Food Saver, but is still fast. My only criticism would be that I wish you could remove the narrow tray to clean it out easier. I only needed to do that once since I had it (i don't recall what had so much moisture in it) but it was not as easy to clean out as the old Food Saver. I would still prefer this NESCO over the Food Saver. The only remaining factor now is the longevity issue. I don't expect to get a real long service life out of any new appliances today, like I used to, but I am hoping that this machine will last a reasonably long time. We will see. I will update if any major issues occur. Oh, Ddd I mention that was less expensive, too? I highly recommend it. ... show more
