  • Exceptional Value - Works Well (Better Than I Would Have Thought)
Style: Stainless Steel Size: 8 Inch
I'm used to using my Mitutoyo 505-626 analog caliper. I figured "It's not the seventies any more, analog calipers went the way of bell bottoms" & decided to "upgrade" to digital. I read a bunch of reviews and watched a bunch of demo videos. I didn't want to spend a fortune, I already have a caliper, and new Mitutoyos are like $200 for a digital one. Analog Mitutoyos are $80! So, I bit the electron & bought a digital iGaging IP54. By the looks of it, I suspect other companies make this same caliper. The good: cheap; digital display makes it easy to read (although it FEELS weird, like going from an analog speedometer to a digital one, your brain has to interpret the numbers, it can't just "feel" the measurement); looks cool; comes with a snazzy, well-padded, although all-plastic, case; pretty accurate (see below); new. The bad: not as smooth as the Mitutoyo (I never considered the Mitutoyo "smooth," but it's WAY smoother than the iGaging); the box that houses the electronics is too large (it isn't svelte like the analog, its boxy in a big-boxy way); quality of materials and craftsmanship, including case, is a notch lower. Why it comes with a spare battery I don't know. I hope it doesn't eat batteries like I do Gummy-bears or we're in for a short honeymoon. I measured a stock piece of cylindrical material used to test and calibrate measuring tools. I guess it's 1/8". Both the analog Mitutoyo and the digital iGaging measured identically: .1265. Now, I KNOW 1/8"=.125, but maybe that is operator error, or maybe the temperature of the materials, but at least both machines were the same. I also tried measuring using different parts of the iGaging calipers' jaws and the reading was identical the entire length. I'm not sure how much more you could ask for, other than the buttery smoothness of the Mitutoyo, but for what it costs, I don't think this tool can be beat. ... show more

  • Excellent for its price
Style: Stainless Steel Size: 12 Inch
Seems to measure accurately enough. Compared to to a few tape measures/straight edges as well as a smaller caliper. It is accurate within the specified tolerance and is affordable so no complaints in that department as of now, will update if some emerge. For feel, it isn't the smoothest ever and the balance could be better. The small adjustment wheel is rather loose but does function properly. The knob to tighten seems to do it's job as well. The build quality seems to be a "Get what you pay for" type of thing, meaning decent for a decent price. For usability, it functions like you would expect calipers to function. My only grip would be that I wish it did not have an auto-on when the calipers are being opened. I would prefer to have it either default to making me turn it on or at least a mode switch to make it so it only turns on manually. Overall, very minor gripe and it does well for the price. ... show more

  • Easy to use and read
Style: Stainless Steel Size: 6 Inch
This is a fairly nice Digital Caliper, comes in a nice storage container. Great for inside and outside measurements. Solid construction. Metal slide and calipers, plastic housing of LCD readout. In use this seams accurate enough and is really easy to use. However this came with 2 batteries and am glad it did. It was shipped with one IN the caliper and when I pulled it out and turned it on, the readout wigged out. all kinds of numbers and letters flashing on the screen. It would do anything but wig out. On a hunch, I replaced the battery it shipped with, with the extra one. Once I did that everything worked fine. So yes this comes with two Lr44 batteries, however only one is usable! So I took a star off for that. The rest of it has been wonderful! ... show more

  • Great Measuring Instrument For Any Price
Style: Stainless Steel Size: 6 Inch
There's some debate over whether or not the item arrived within the 2-day shipping window, but I'll put that aside for now. The digital caliper comes in a dark grey/black plastic case that snaps together (9 3/4" X 3 1/2" X 1"). Mine came with a hairline crack in the lower left section, next to the hinges. Upon further inspection, the crack became larger, and ended up being a piece of plastic 1" long in my hand. Nothing a hot glue gun couldn't fix, I guess. Still, disappointed a brand new product arrived in defective shape. Unacceptable. That's the negative. However, the working part of the package is actually quite functional. The Neiko Tools, USA digital caliper is accurate to within 0.03mm/0.001", and has a repeatability rate of 0.01mm/0.0005". The small, one page folded owners instructions advises the owner to take three separate measurements, then take the average of the three for greater accuracy. The LCD display screen (1 1/2" X 1/2") is large enough for almost anybody, but it is not back lit. It came with one silver oxide 1.5V LR44 battery installed (supposedly good for one year of continuous use) and a spare as well. The screen will flash to warn of a low battery. In addition to the inner and outer measuring caliper is the highly accurate depth measurement probe, made of the same hardened stainless steel. The caliper is equipped with a serial output for interface with a host computer or printer. I haven't tried that yet, but that should be interesting. Note: It does not come with the corresponding serial output cable. The screen has an auto off function to save battery life, and comes on automatically when being used, or you may choose to use the on/off button, and reset zero. The display can be zeroed at any point on the slide. The display can instantly be converted from SAE to Metric and back again with a press of a button. The caliper itself is made of hardened stainless steel. On the back of the LCD screen is a metallic, adhesive sticker with a couple of tables of screw thread standards for your convenience. I don't foresee these coming into play for me, but one never knows. More information, in the right context, is a good thing. As for ergonomics, the machine-grooved thumb-roll mechanism makes it easy to operate, and the position lock for sure readings works reasonably well. All parts are superbly crafted, from the precision ground jaws to the lettering on the back scale. This is a delicate instrument. One must be willing to take one's time and learn to operate it smoothly. It's ever so very sensitive, ready to measure the tiniest of things. If you're not interested in anything past the the first decimal, then maybe a tape measure will be more to your liking. Also, remember to give this tool a little oil maybe twice a year, if you're using it frequently. It will corrode eventually, like anything else. Overall, very pleased with it. Almost gave it a four because of the darn case being broken and all. If treated properly, it should serve you well for many years to come. All this for under $20! ... show more
