  • Easy to use, basic motorized Dolly with smart phone app control option
The media could not be loaded. Today I'm reviewing this motorized camera dolly by Neewer, We'll open the box right up. Inside we have a poly-wrapped carry case with a glue tab holding it on. We'll get rid of his bag. There is a pretty good amount of weight here, we'll see about getting this on a scale to get the actual weight (2 pounds 4.7 ounces). The case here has a single zipper, which I'm not unzipping and opening up. Inside in the top mesh bag are some installation tips and motion tips, an instruction manual that is eight small panels on one side. Then another language on the other side. There is a USB-A to USB-C cable, this has a purple tip and there is a flag with a notice to only use this cable to charge the device. The first item is a cellphone mount that can do horizontal or vertical mount and has a spring mounted clamp to hold your smart device. It is able to hold a pixel 5 without issue. For the price point of this kit, I feel this should've been an anodized aluminum instead of the plastic, but this should hold up for quite a while. We have the ball-mount for your camera. It has a 1/4" 20 thread mount point. Now we will remove the motorized dolly, which is in a poly bag. Right here are the steering wheels. We will rotate this out 90 degrees to get a stable base for the dolly. I'm going to attach the ball-mount to the dolly. To turn this on we hold the power button for a few seconds. We have speed settings of 1-5. I see some status lights. If I press the left arrow button the dolly begins to move. Pressing the right button twice and it stopped. Pressing again to move in that direction. We can see the speed change from 2->5 is a little bit quicker. Now a quick demonstration of a dolly shot. The dolly is fairly silent and can sneak up on unsuspecting animals. Joking aside, this is a useful device. The existing Neewer smart phone app used for studio lights was able to find and connect to this dolly on the first try. The only negative thing I can say is that the smart phone clamp does not match the quality of the rest of this kit. I wish they would've included one of their anodized aluminum phone clamps. If you need some slow dolly shots, this could fit the need. There is no app-controlled steering, just speed in two directions. You can change the angle of the wheels to give a curving arc shot, but you my have some trial and error to get the path correct. I'm going to remove a star for these two limitations, which gives a final score of four out of five stars. Pros - Simple to use - Stable with my 80D SLR and my smart phone - App connectivity was simple Cons - Phone clamp is lower 'quality' than the dolly and ball-mount - No remote controllable steering - Fairly low speed even at fast setting - Slow charging (7-watt rate) ... show more

  • Not bad for the price
This thing is kind of cute and it’s hard not to laugh when you see it tooling around the table with your camera on top. It’s quiet but your microphone will still pick up the noise so I think it’s best to use with an external microphone. It has on unit controls which I failed to see the value of since it’s constantly moving around and the angle is adjustable so you can move it straight or do various curve to trajectories and control it via the app. What I wish is that there was a little more difference in the speed controls. I wish the slow speed was slower and the fastest speed was faster. That is I want a wider range of speed options. But considering the price and the excellent bill quality of the unit it’s still a useful tool. And I promise you you’re going to laugh when you first see it in action. I’m not sure why it’s so funny maybe because it’s so small. ... show more

  • A lot of function for not a lot of money
NEEWER has a rep for making high quality, seriously functional creator gear at value price points. I've got a ridiculous amount of their stuff for this very reason. Not much of a surprise that this is more of the same. I've tested it with a GoPro Hero 11, my Nikon DSLR and my Pixel 7 Pro and it worked great with all of 'em. The motor is really quiet which was a concern. I also chased my cat around the room with it, which we both enjoyed. I've just scratched the surface of what I can do with this but it's typical NEEWER--well made, highly functional, extremely versatile and sold at a serious value price point. Highly recommended! ... show more
