My daughter loved this gift so much. It was her favorite Christmas present. She (8 yrs old) had some interest in magic, the tricks in this package were perfect for her age. The tricks are actually quite impressive. They do need patience and practice to make them really good, but all magicians need that. The chemistry experiments (about half the activities) are a bit tame, but still interesting enough for 8 year olds. The calendar format allows her to open up a new gift every couple of days and keeps the magic from being overwhelming. We've purchased many advent calendars in the past with either chocolate or figurines or squishies etc. which are nice to collect but don't have a lot of value after Christmas. I think they're all put away in a closet now, and the enjoyment of opening each day's "door" was short lived. This National Geographic Magic Advent Calendar actually gave us stuff to DO, and we looked forward to learning a new trick or trying out a little experiment every day. Some of the tricks build on previous ones so you need to open them all in order. There are a few really neat science experiments and you can learn a lot about bases and acids/alkalines and disclosers. It was fun learning the tricks and then performing them for other family members. They were amazed and baffled at how we accomplished the tricks and we all had a good time. It's also helpful to learn some of the "banter" that goes with magic and the misdirection that is very important to make the tricks go over well. We had a fun time with each of these tricks and will definitely look for something similar for next year. This is an excellent option for a calendar if you are into learning and magic. Great for kids though there are small parts like dice and some experiments involve stuff like citric acid and a type of microcrystalline cellulose so keep out of reach of the little kiddos. ... show more

My 10 year old son requested to not get a Lego adventure calender this year. I wasn't sure what I was going to do because he's too grown for a lot of them. This magic adventure calender was perfect! It kept him entertained and he is still doing and practicing some of the magic tricks to perfect them into January ... show more

My son thinks it’s really cool BUT by day 9 we had missing 3 items…or at least we thought they were missing.. two of the times the missing object was found in a later box for a different trick ( ex: coin ). He did miss the trick for those days tho. The instructions are also a bit complicated when it comes to the magic tricks, thankfully they have videos to go along. The box does states 8+ so maybe my son it’s too young still (7). He really looks forward EACH DAY tho. If you do buy, it won’t be a TOTAL waste because kids DO enjoy it, maybe just open the calendar before hand and check if everything is in order. I want to also mention that I did contact Amazon about the missing pieces and they sent a new one but the new one had the same problem so it must be a production issue. ... show more

The calendar is already missing items on two of the days. On day 4 it did not include the package of citric acid so he could not complete the experiment that day. It was included the next day and we redid it. I was disappointing that it was not included on the correct day. Then now today on day 9 it is missing the plastic coin that is supposed to be included for a trick. It is important that things be correct on items like this for the child as they cannot be done with out them which leads to complete disappointment. This review is based off of this advent calendar alone and not Amazon themselves. We got the Science National Geographic advent calendar last year and it was awesome and had all the pieces for the experiments, so we bought this one for this Christmas. My daughter has been extremely disappointed that her elf would bring her an advent calendar that is missing multiple items!! At least four days have been missing items to do the tricks with and then today's day, the 20th day was completely empty!! She got nothing for today! I bought this about a month and a half ago to have it ready and in time for the whole month of December and luckily I contacted Amazon today and they refunded me for it but this should not be happening! Especially for kids that believe in their elf and Santa and I have seen a few other reviews say that theres was missing items too! I would stay clear of this one. ... show more

We were very happy with this advent calendar. Each day there was a different and new item for the kids to open and while the quality of items wasn’t high, it was appropriate for kids’ magic tricks.
