I was looking for a great gift for the science teacher and knew the whole mug thing wasn’t going to hit the mark for someone who had been teaching for decades. I am sure her cabinets are full! - So I spent some time searching on Amazon to find an appropriate and special gift, but all I really knew about her was she had made science understandable and interesting for the teens in the small private school which was no small feat science my daughter hated science in the past. After perusing the offerings for about 30 minutes, I settled on the geodes kit from National Geographic. Here is what I thought it had going for it: 1. It was science related with a reputable name behind it. 2. It was a quick-and-easy-to-explain activity if she wanted to do it with older or younger kids or grandkids. 3. It was a hands on experience and a physical gift at the same time. 4. It was pretty. As a lady, I knew I liked pretty, sparkly rocks (usually in jewelry form though) - so I was hoping she would too. 5. It was in my price range. After giving the gift, we discovered the teacher had a special interest in rocks. So it was a good match. It is nice to feel like you purchased a gift that is well received and won’t be collecting dust. She has already made plans to open some of the geodes during a class this year. Thus far it is a raging success. During my research, I discovered that scoring an equator around circumference and using a hammer/chisel to open produced a better outcome than just using a hammer. The hammer alone seemed to produce smaller sections and some crumbled. I would also suggest using some type of holding mechanism, if possible, like a vice with foam padding around the geode. I noticed that many of the people in the videos were afraid to hold it in place while they were striking it to open. Once they are opened in class I will update the review with any feedback I get. Update: Everyone loved it and the teacher made a point of mentioning how much it meant to get a special and thoughtful gift.

These were awesome. Our kids absolutely loved them. They do make a big mess but so worth it. The crystals in them were very nice we did get some colored ones. Instruction are in box. We did drill a whole in one and it was easier to open up. Definitely wear the eye protection because pieces do fly everywhere. So much fun for any kid who loves crystals or rocks!

I know these say for kids, but I’m new to rock tumbling so I thought I’d give these a shot. I used a tile saw to cut mine and they are sprayed with water because I’m still trying to figure out the best way to finish them off. I had a great time cutting them open to see what’s there. They are very educational and come with a wonderful guide explaining geodes, what they are and how they are formed and all the different varieties of shapes you can find inside. I think a chisel would be a much better option to open than a hammer if you want anything left but pieces, but hey sometimes a hammer is not bad either. I think it’d be a great way to spend time with family, older kids, and friends.

Please wear the safety glasses (we did and were thankful as a piece of rock hit the glasses and could have been his eye) I gave it 4 stars because 2 of the 5 were felt extra heavy and turned out more of a solid crystal formation and was not able to be broken open (we are looking to get something to maybe cut them open). Otherwise it was a lot of fun and very beautiful… a bit messy but in a good way. BTW this was for my 40something husband… not just for kids.

I ordered these geodes for a friend that started rock collecting. It was quick shipping and they were well-protected. The sizes varied from ~4 inches to 5.25 inches. When cut, there were nice crystal formations in all of the geodes. Some were opened with a tile saw/rock saw; one was opened with a hammer. Some were fairly clear, a couple were milky white and one had a nice grey tone. I recommend using a chisel if you are using a hammer and go slow. A hard hit with a hammer will get you inside but cause a lot more damage/pieces.

I bought this box to teach kids about how beauty comes from within. They had a blast wearing the safety goggles that it came with and then after looking at the crystals through the magnifying glass that it also came with. We had geodes of all different colors. A couple were on the smaller size, like a golf ball, but most of them were the size of a cutie orange or an avocado. The value was also amazing, I was at a store the next day and 1 geode was selling for over $9, so this box was well worth the value and it included the safety glasses, a learning pamphlet and the magnifying glass. I highly recommend this product! I will say we hit the geodes several times and very hard before they cracked open so another time I would try scoring the geode that is suggested.

The geodes were poor quality, most shattered under a hammer, no wet saw available. There is no colored quartz, mostly all white. rocks are too hard for kids to break. Takes all the fun out when dad has to do it.
