  • Successful Christmas Gift
Gifted this to my 10 year old nephew. He had a lot of fun and finished building it in one night.

  • A blast to build
So much fun to build. The instructions were very clear. My six year old enjoyed using the screwdriver. Highly recommend to teach the mechanics of an engine.

  • Good choice for entry level engine model building
This is a nice beginner set for a young man less than 200 parts versus other models with 600 to 1000 parts

  • Absolutely Fantastic STEM Kit!
The Blue Marble National Geographic 4-Cylinder Engine Building Kit is hands-down one of the most fun and educational projects we’ve done together. With 175+ well-designed pieces, clear components, and genuinely moving parts, this kit does an amazing job of turning a complex concept into something you can actually see and understand. Watching the pistons, crankshaft, and valves work together in real time is incredibly satisfying and surprisingly eye-opening, even for adults. The engine functions as a real one. The kit is made of durable plastic that is not flimsy or easy to break. This was the perfect rainy-day project. I built it with my nephew, and we both had a blast. The instructions and learning guide are clear and engaging, and the included tools make the whole experience feel hands-on and authentic. By the end, we didn’t just have a cool working model, we actually understood how an engine works, which felt like a big win. The finished model looks awesome on display, feels sturdy, and truly delivers on its educational promise. Wonderful model, well worth the money, and a fantastic way to have fun while learning. Highly recommend for curious kids (and grown-ups too!). Age range is really up to the child's attention span but it is recommended for ten and up. It does not have to be done in one sitting. Just have fun! ... show more

  • Excellent Quality!! Incorporated Learning Could be Improved
The pieces in this kit are excellent quality and really well made. The instructions are clear on how to put the pieces together and the renderings of the parts are excellent. The movement is great to see it in action. They have a nicely produced video on their website if you prefer that over a paper book. The video has a person doing the full assembly over a musical tune. The assembly and learning are not as intertwined as I had hoped, which is a miss for me. We wanted this for just as much for the learning aspect as assembly. There is lots of cross referencing to different pages in the two books to figure out which part we are working on and what it does, which gets frustrating after a while. The included stickers are fun, but any stickers can be used to make it more personalized. Can add favorite characters, a name, etc.. Overall nice pieces in this with very detailed build instructions. It’s an overall great presentation as a gift (don't forget to include the required batteries if it's a gift). With a couple of tweaks to the layout of the materials, this is a super 5 star product. -- More Detail if Needed -- The instruction book shows all included parts with names and numbers at the front. Then, it has the build pages that reference only the numbers, not the part names. We had to keep flipping back and forth to different pages for the part names, which got frustrating. We ended up writing the names in ourselves. The build page also doesn’t say what the part does. That info is in the other book where they have a page of definitions for the major pieces. Would be better to have it all together. Assembly may not all be done in one sitting, so that will also help if picking it back up later. Also, some kids are not going to have the patience or attention span to keep cross-referencing. They will just assemble and move on. Keep in mind that the adult helper may not know anything about engines either. ... show more

  • What a cool kit!
National Geographic 4-Cylinder Engine Building Kit: $49.99 at the time of review I've mentioned in many other reviews that my wife and I don't have kids. We do, however, have several nibblings who we love very much. We take it upon ourselves to spoil them when they come to stay with us, especially when it comes to the toy department. In particular, I like finding educational toys that don't feel like educational toys. So when I saw this engine kit that could teach the kids how car engines work, but feel like Legos or some other fun building tool, I knew I had to give it a try. *What I liked*: This kit was a hit! It is such a neat idea. To build a see-through engine that you build yourself and power with batteries so you can watch how it works… Love it (and so did the kids)! I built this with my 10-year-old nephew and, while it was a little frustrating for him in parts, I just guided him when he got stuck. Overall, he loved it! The end result is really cool! I would've absolutely loved this when I was a kid. Considering the cost of even a medium sized Lego set, I find the price here to be a great value proposition. *What I didn't like*: No complaints. *The Bottom Line:* I'm so glad I ordered this for my nephew. It was a lot of fun to build together, and watching the end result work (once we added the batteries), made it all worthwhile. This is an easy five stars out of five from us. I would totally order this over again. ... show more
