Overall Thoughts… Think about it. Give a gift to a kid that will teach them how an engine works because they built one. This gift is fabulous in thought and action but be prepared to be there during the build to help. It comes with clear step by step procedures and a glossary of terms, some tiny screw and screwdriver, decals and a small electronic circuit board to power it. SEE PHOTOS. This will take time to do so I have just included photos of the supplied parts and some excellent included information that accompanies the build set. Absolutely 5 stars for National Geographic!!

The pieces in this kit are excellent quality and really well made. The instructions are clear on how to put the pieces together and the renderings of the parts are excellent. The movement is great to see it in action. They have a nicely produced video on their website if you prefer that over a paper book. The video has a person doing the full assembly over a musical tune. The assembly and learning are not as intertwined as I had hoped, which is a miss for me. We wanted this for just as much for the learning aspect as assembly. There is lots of cross referencing to different pages in the two books to figure out which part we are working on and what it does, which gets frustrating after a while. The included stickers are fun, but any stickers can be used to make it more personalized. Can add favorite characters, a name, etc.. Overall nice pieces in this with very detailed build instructions. It’s an overall great presentation as a gift (don't forget to include the required batteries if it's a gift). With a couple of tweaks to the layout of the materials, this is a super 5 star product. -- More Detail if Needed -- The instruction book shows all included parts with names and numbers at the front. Then, it has the build pages that reference only the numbers, not the part names. We had to keep flipping back and forth to different pages for the part names, which got frustrating. We ended up writing the names in ourselves. The build page also doesn’t say what the part does. That info is in the other book where they have a page of definitions for the major pieces. Would be better to have it all together. Assembly may not all be done in one sitting, so that will also help if picking it back up later. Also, some kids are not going to have the patience or attention span to keep cross-referencing. They will just assemble and move on. Keep in mind that the adult helper may not know anything about engines either.

This National Geographic engine building kit is an excellent hands on STEM activity for kids who enjoy building and understanding how things work. The pieces are sturdy and well made, and the clear engine components make it easy to see how everything fits together and moves once assembled. The instructions are easy to follow and thoughtfully written, making the building process both challenging and rewarding. Kids can take their time assembling each part and truly learn how a four cylinder engine functions. The moving pistons and visible mechanics are fascinating and help turn abstract concepts into something very real and engaging.

Another great kit from NatGeo. My husband is a four-cylinder engine enthusiast and lover of all things mechanical, so this was right up his alley. He’s excited to build this engine with our daughters when they’re a little older. The parts are nicely made, and the instructions are clear and thorough. With more than 175 pieces, this kit may be a bit challenging for someone with no prior building experience, especially given the complexity of the design. As someone who’s less mechanically inclined, I find it fascinating but would be hesitant to take it on by myself. Overall, this is a well-designed, educational kit that’s best suited for more experienced builders or for building together with an adult.

I can see why this engine model kit has won awards, it’s a well-designed, educational set that’s both fun and challenging to build. The parts fit together nicely, and the clear housing makes it easy to watch the pistons and gears move just like a real engine. It’s a fantastic hands-on way for kids (and adults) to learn about mechanics and engineering. Overall, it’s a great value and a rewarding project for anyone who enjoys STEM activities.

I ordered this National Geographic 4-cylinder engine building kit (3 AA batteries not included) for my son. This build involves a lot of little pieces. The instruction manual though is wonderfully illustrated and there is also an instructional video online. I appreciate that it includes a Learning Guide which gives a history of the 4-cylinder engine. Overall, everything seems well made and this is a great STEM project for kids who are interested in engines.
