🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The MXL BCD1 Microphone is highly praised for its sound clarity and quality, suitable for podcasting and radio production. It has better output than other more expensive mics and doesn't require as much gain on your preamp. However, the mic has been noted to have a brittle high end, and the mount and yoke do not provide the sturdiest support.

Pros

  • 🎙 Good sound clarity and quality
  • 🎚 Requires less preamp gain
  • 📦 Well packaged and fast shipping
  • 🏷 Good value for cost

Cons

  • 🔊 Brittle high end sound
  • 🧰 Mics seem cheaply made
  • 📏 More ambient noise pickup
  • ⚙ Mount and yoke do not provide the sturdiest support

Should I Buy It?

Despite a few minor setbacks, the MXL BCD1 Microphone is a solid investment particularly for those in Podcasting or Radio Production. Its sound clarity and performance offer more than what you'd expect for its moderately low price point. However, if the high end sound and build quality are of high importance, then comparing with other brands may be worthwhile.

  • Tested this vs Rode NT1, MXL 2006, Sennheiser MKH 416, and Synco Mic-D2
Color: Black Style: Microphone
We did a "5 microphone showdown" of this little Dynamic microphone against 4 condenser microphones. (TLDR: We kept this one + the Sennheiser) We tested 2 different people, both trained actors/singers (one a young female alto, one an older bass male voice), we tested: - MXL BD1 (Dynamic Mic) - Rode NT1 (cardioid condenser, about $170) - MXL 2006 (cardioid condenser, about $90) - Sennheiser MKH 416 (the legendary ultimate shotgun mic for film & voiceover work, about $1000) - Synco Mic-D2 (a cheap knockoff of the Sennheiser, about $130) We recorded both us reading text into each mike, and singing as well. RESULTS: OVERALL WINNER: Sennheiser MK 416. For spoken voiceover/solo podcast scenarios, the Sennheiser was incredible. Clear, quiet, highly directional, and accurate. We both sounded amazing. We now understand why even the biggest voiceover stars drool over this mic. It's true: you do get what you pay for. WORST: The Synco Mic-d2 (Sennheiser knockoff) was SO, SO bad compared to the Sennheiser. There was no contest. We sounded flat, dead, devoid of feeling and emotion, like we were detached. it was by FAR the worst mic in the test. It's the "fool's gold" to the real thing. Makes me believe the rumors that Synco sent better mics to the original youtube reviewers than what they're shipping to the rest of us. It's the only way to explain the side by side video reviewers who claimed it was almost as good as the Sennheiser. These Syncos sell for $130 and they are NOWHERE CLOSE to the real $1,000 Sennheiser. Garbage. EXCELLENT, and ABOUT THE SAME: Rode NT1 and MXL 2006. Both these mics are great. Quiet, pro-level voiceover mics for a darn good price. It was really hard to tell the recordings apart. The NT1 is especially accurate and doesn't "color the voice" at all. The younger person preferred the NT1, the older person liked the MXL for being a bit more warm and "alive" sounding. Hard to explain but it made his voice just sound friendlier. But in the end we decided to send them both back because we loved the Sennheiser so much and we couldn't justify keeping these. BEST FOR SINGING, BEST AT CAPTURING EMOTION AND ENHANCING A DEEP VOICE: MXL BD-1 We could really hear the difference during the singing test. Now we understand why pro singers all use dynamic mics, rather than condensers. I don't know the science behind it, but this little dynamic mic was SO much better at capturing the emotion and feeling in singing. The difference between the condensers (even the Sennheiser) and the BD-1 was like night and day. BUT, we had to get much closer to the BD-1 for spoken/voiceover work, unless we deliberately projected. I guess that's the downside of a dynamic voice. Works best with loud voices. We were also impressed by how good it made the bass voice sound. We'll use this for singing and the Sennhieser for Voiceover/Podcasting/Video where a shotgun mic is helpful. CONCLUSION: This BD1 is an amzing value in a dynamic mic. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great for a deep, rich voice
Color: Black Style: Microphone
Pros: -Build quality of the microphone is outstanding, feels very well-built. -Great output signal (this is in comparison to the SM7B, which requires a cloudlifter to reach usable output levels) -Included accessories, comes with a built-in mounting system and a windscreen, as well as a hard plastic carrying case -Sound quality, this one is mmore subjective. My voice sounds great on it during live streams/voiceover work in my home studio. My voice is deep and rich, and this microphone accentuates it extremely well, but I've heard some of my friends' voices over this mic and been disappointed. Cons: -doesn't suit nasaly or extremely syblant voices very well in my experience, or shrill voices that lack bass and richness -the included mounting system is questionable. Seems to be holding up for now, but isnt as well-constructed as the rest of the included harware Final verdict: For my applications and my specific voice, this microphone sounds superb, especially for the price. It further accentuates the richness of my voice, while adding sharpness and clarity with its boost to the higher frequencies. Great for spoken word and voiceover work. ... show more

  • Great mic really
Color: Black Style: Microphone
Great mic really. I'm still getting used to it but I have noticed that it cuts down on background noise since it is a dynamic mic, which means your mouth really has to be close to the mic to be adequately picked up. There are still some adjustments I need to make to ensure I get the best sound possible. I'm running it into my computer using an AUDIOBOX USB PreSonus amp and actual XLR cables from the mic to the amp. From there, it goes to the computer via USB. I need to dial in the settings on the front of the amp for best clarity of sound. Overall, this is a good to great microphone for recording at home or in studio. I use it mainly for Voice Over projects and to record my sermons. I've used a number of microphones, from Blue, Snowball, Spark, and Rhodes, to a few others. This one, by far, has been the best. I thought the price was fair as well. Originally, I also purchased a portable sound "booth" that wraps around the microphone but realized I didn't need it because the mic itself is pretty good about not picking up background noises. ... show more

  • MXL has a WINNER with this mic. Love It!!
Color: Black Style: Microphone
I worked in radio for over 30 years. Most stations either had the EV RE-20 or the Shure SM7B. They have been around forever and are great mics if you have the right mic processor. For the past 10 years I have worked from my home studio doing radio production for over 100 stations and some other VO work. I have several mics that I have used over the years including the two listed above and the MD421. I also have a couple of nice condenser mics that I use for certain VO projects. I bought this MXL BCD-1 to be my new mic for my travel studio. It's your basic laptop with a focusrite inteface. I wasn't expecting this mic to be as good as my main setup at home with the RE-20 but I was surprised. The BCD-1 is a GREAT microphone. It has a great sound to it. I realize every voice is different and everybody has a mic they love but you really need to give this mic a shot. It has a nice bottom end but also a very nice crisp high end. That's something the other dynamic mics I own do not have. You can add whatever EQ'ing you want in post processing but this mic has it directly from the mic. It doesn't require nearly the gain of the RE-20 and SM7B either. It sounds a lot more like my condenser mics than the dynamic ones. Being dynamic though, you don't have all of the background noise that a condenser can have. I am ordering a couple more of these because this one is now going to be my main production microphone. I'm going to need another BCD-1 to be my travel mic. Again, everybody has their own opinion on which mics sound good but my opinion is ... this mic sounds great. ... show more
