🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The MXL BCD1 Microphone is highly praised for its sound clarity and quality, suitable for podcasting and radio production. It has better output than other more expensive mics and doesn't require as much gain on your preamp. However, the mic has been noted to have a brittle high end, and the mount and yoke do not provide the sturdiest support.

Pros

  • 🎙 Good sound clarity and quality
  • 🎚 Requires less preamp gain
  • 📦 Well packaged and fast shipping
  • 🏷 Good value for cost

Cons

  • 🔊 Brittle high end sound
  • 🧰 Mics seem cheaply made
  • 📏 More ambient noise pickup
  • ⚙ Mount and yoke do not provide the sturdiest support

Should I Buy It?

Despite a few minor setbacks, the MXL BCD1 Microphone is a solid investment particularly for those in Podcasting or Radio Production. Its sound clarity and performance offer more than what you'd expect for its moderately low price point. However, if the high end sound and build quality are of high importance, then comparing with other brands may be worthwhile.

  • Pretty solid mic.
Color: Gray Style: Microphone
Fast shipping !!!!! My MXL BCD1 was for a friday delivery but I received it on Tuesday. The Microphone is well packaged & a pretty solid Microphone. I had to rig up the mounting for my boom because the only hardware included is for a standard on stage Microphone stand threading. This Microphone is pretty clear with some Compression & suites my needs for Podcasting, I was using the Behringer xm 8500 & this mic beats that with clarity comparison on my current system. The BCD1 does come with the foam plosive cover. The u bracket support screws are a issue from what i understand, but you have to remove the threaded washers first leaving the rubber washer in place between the mic & the mount then attach the mic to the bracket & using the threaded washers to hold it in place with the follow up of the thumb screw behind it. I get 0 vertical movement from the mic this way, very solid! ... show more

  • Compared against Shure SM7b - pretty darn good for this price
Color: Black Style: Microphone
I'll have to update this review after I've spent more time with the mic - it only arrived today (Amazon Sunday delivery - woohoo). I bought this mic in the hopes that it would be a cheaper alternative to the Shure SM7 or the EV RE-20. In particular, I have tall ceilings and hardwood floors so my rooms have a lot of echo and reverb - so I wanted a mic that would reject a lot of the ambient noise and room reflections ... and that is exactly what the Shure SM7 does really well (it is a life saver when you don't have a treated, soundproof room to record in). I made some comparison recordings in my large, untreated room using the Shure SM7 and the MXL BCD-1 to compare. First thing I noticed - the MXL has a lot more output so you don't need so much gain on your preamp. This is a good thing - the Shure SM7 is notorious for needing A LOT of preamp gain and in fact many preamps don't have enough gain for the Shure. The MXL has plenty of output so I had to back the preamp down quite a bit with the MXL to match the level of the Shure. The MXL picks up more of the room than the Shure does - I experimented by recording my voice while standing back away from the mic (something you would not normally do with this mic - these are made to be right up on the mic) and you can hear a lot more of the room reflections in the MXL recordings compared to the Shure. Then I gradually moved closer to the mic listening to the proximity effect (the voice getting more bassy as you get closer to the mic) and both mics behaved about the same as I got closer. Then I recorded my voice while right up on the mic and the two mics sounded very similar when working close as these mics are intended. The Shure sounded more deep and wool-y (is that a word? I mean almost muffled but in a soft pleasing way) while the MXL was clearer and brighter ... possibly harsher, it didn't have that "intimate" warmth that the Shure has. It may be more "accurate" than the Shure - it's a good sound but the Shure has its own character. The hardware isn't nearly as professional as the Shure (neither was the price). The mount to the stand doesn't spin free so you have to either spin the stand or spin the entire mic while threading the mic clip onto the stand (the Shure mount spins the sleeve so you can tighten it to the stand easily). The Yoke that holds the mic doesn't tighten or grip to hold the angle of the mic - so you have to use the cord to try and get the mic to hold the angle you set it to. There are thumb screws on either side and they do give "a little bit" of friction when fully tightened, but they don't grab and hold the mic no matter how tight you twist them. ... show more

  • Decent if you're on a budget
Color: Black Style: Microphone
I bought a couple of these to add to my mobile recording setup for my podcast so that I could record multiple guests at once. I use an SM7B for my main mic and the sound quality difference is pretty stark between that and the MXL, particularly in the high end. Pros-The MXL mics do have a nice midrange and have good rejection if positioned correctly. Cons- I find the high end a bit brittle and the mics seem cheaply made. If this is your first mic these might be a good option, especially if you have no experience with eq. However, similar mics by Rode or Shure might be better options ... show more

  • MXL has a WINNER with this mic. Love It!!
Color: Black Style: Microphone
I worked in radio for over 30 years. Most stations either had the EV RE-20 or the Shure SM7B. They have been around forever and are great mics if you have the right mic processor. For the past 10 years I have worked from my home studio doing radio production for over 100 stations and some other VO work. I have several mics that I have used over the years including the two listed above and the MD421. I also have a couple of nice condenser mics that I use for certain VO projects. I bought this MXL BCD-1 to be my new mic for my travel studio. It's your basic laptop with a focusrite inteface. I wasn't expecting this mic to be as good as my main setup at home with the RE-20 but I was surprised. The BCD-1 is a GREAT microphone. It has a great sound to it. I realize every voice is different and everybody has a mic they love but you really need to give this mic a shot. It has a nice bottom end but also a very nice crisp high end. That's something the other dynamic mics I own do not have. You can add whatever EQ'ing you want in post processing but this mic has it directly from the mic. It doesn't require nearly the gain of the RE-20 and SM7B either. It sounds a lot more like my condenser mics than the dynamic ones. Being dynamic though, you don't have all of the background noise that a condenser can have. I am ordering a couple more of these because this one is now going to be my main production microphone. I'm going to need another BCD-1 to be my travel mic. Again, everybody has their own opinion on which mics sound good but my opinion is ... this mic sounds great. ... show more

  • I love it, my number one mike
Color: Black Style: Microphone
I've bought a lot of microphones; this is my favorite one. I finally found something that works for me. (It's not self-contained, not a cheap USB mike.) I connect mine through the Scarlett 2i2, and it's the best sounding mike I've found. It gives me that warm deep sound that I've been looking for. (I've got a dozen USB mikes that sound tinny and full of air, this is not that.) ... show more
