  • Good for any age as well as children
Color: Green
I have an older friend that is going to join us on a cruise later this summer that used to take a lot of photographs, but unfortunately is somewhat of a technophobe and doesn't have a modern smart phone. I am hoping that this camera, that is semiautomatic and tailored for kids, will be so un-intemidating that she will be comfortable using it. The literature on Amazon about this camera does not go into sufficient detail to describe all the features of this simple point and shoot camera, but it is fairly impressive. It has most all of the features you find on most digital and cell phone cameras including time and date coding. I took a series of test pictures and the auto-focus worked fairly well except on digital zoom. You need to partially depress the shutter release and wait until it does its thing before you depress it completely to take the picture, just like on most other digital cameras. I was generally impressed with the overall quality of the pictures as viewed on my 4K monitor, but was particularly impressed with the series I took in the macro mode. I think that my friend will have no problem learning to use this simple camera and should get some decent pictures to remember the cruise. I know that there are a lot of cameras in this price range with these general specs and features, that I have not personally reviewed, but I think that this very small camera with its integral lens shield should be on your short list. The lens shield feature reminds me of the great little 3D camera Fuji made a few years ago. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the size of the lenses on digital cameras because of the strides in optics and sensor technology, they can be almost microscopic. Just look at the quality of a modern cell phone photo or video. ... show more

  • Low res, low risk
Color: Blue
Okay, so I ordered this just out of curiosity. My phone camera is only 12MP, but this Mutrain X10 is 42MP. Wow! I thought... Ha! I now think... The photos are indeed 42MP, but still manage to result in super low resolution. Way, way blurrier than my 12MP phone camera (see photo). Curiosity satisfied. 42MP is only better if everything else is better too—lens, image processing, size of sensor, etc etc... I could go on, but I'd feel like a bully, because it says right in the description "great choice for children's photography enlightenment." Fair enough. The form factor is nice and small, and the build quality isn't bad for a toy-grade camera. Judging from the waviness of the front mirror I'd guess it's unbreakable/safe. The instruction manual is better than most. It comes in a nice box, and includes everything you need—lanyard, 32GB microSD card, charging cable, soft pouch, extra screen protectors. They've done a good job with the overall package. It was charged & ready to go, has 1/4" tripod mount, easily pocketable, and relatively expendable for less worry about loss or damage from kids' adventures. The camera functions are rudimentary, but easy to navigate. Video works reasonably well, and the slow-mo mode is fun to play with (laggy, but kids won't care). For kids who don't want a camera that's shaped like a frog or kitty or something, this camera might be a good choice. Number of stars for this item is inversely proportional to age of user...so I'm going to channel my 6 year old self and say (in a higher voice) — 4 stars ;-) (And my adult self will be less likely to fall for high MB numbers in the future.) ... show more

  • Good images and hardware let down by bad autofocus
Color: Green
This is a nice camera that just struggles to focus. My guess would be that the limitations of the sensor are to blame as it seems to struggle to consistently determine depth of field. When it focuses, the images are good. I let my older kids use it and they had fun, though even they noticed the focus challenges (which meant I kept hearing about the focus challenges, ad nauseum). But, this is an inexpensive camera. You're not buying a great sensor. You will get exactly what you pay for in the optics or sensor and slightly more than you pay for in the construction. It's plastic, but unlike other cheap cameras it feels solid. The mirror panel on the front flips down just like - here's where I date myself - the BlackBerry Torch when you opened it to reveal its keyboard. As a nice touch, this action turns the camera on/off (it also has a dedicated power button). As an old guy (please see the earlier reference to BlackBerry phones), it took me longer than it probably should have to realize that the mirror on the front is for selfies. It's a nice addition that gives the camera extra utility. Last surprise was the tripod or selfie stick screw hole. I didn't really expect a camera at this price point to give up space for that feature. I don't think I'd use it, but with the mirror I can see it getting some use on a selfie stick. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who owns a half-decent phone. You almost certainly have a better camera already. But if you have kids 6-10 and they're not getting a phone anytime soon, this is a great "real" camera. Watching my kids make a movie they were inventing on the fly made me realize that single-purpose equipment can spark creativity in a way that a multi-purpose internet-connected device doesn't. TL;DR - fun for kids; not so great for anyone who owns a phone made in the last 6 years. ... show more
