  • Saved my butt during COVID
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
I had to quarantine with COVID in a room that had no microwave but did have an electric kettle. This chili mac with some added Tabasco saved my butt and kept me fed during my quarantine. Thanks, Mountain House!

  • Pretty good for what it is
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
This review is based on the product being a freeze dried product with a 30 year shelf life, and not what I imagine the best restaurant could provide me. Overall it was good, I'd eat it again. A little better than the canned version I've had taste wise but probably not worth the cost difference if you don't need it to be light weight or have a 30 year shelf life. Flavor: It needed salt in my opinion. Not horrible without it, but I needed a few good sprinkles in there to make it taste better. It was a little spicier than I thought it would be, but it still wasn't "too" spicy. Portion size: I was pretty hungry before, and while not stuffed, I am full as a 5'10" 250lb guy. Though this includes also drinking a full glass of water with it. It was less filling than your average burger + large fries combo. Value: I think I got this for about $6-$7 which is fair. Right now it is $9 and for that price I would probably hold off. Misc: Like others suggested, putting in a little less water probably would have been better. Maybe 1 1/4th cup. I also felt it was edible at 9 minutes, but I let it go closer to 20 which seemed much better. It was also still extremely hot at 9 minutes anyway, so the extra 10 minutes let it cool off a bit and rehydrate more. ... show more

  • Freeze dry food

Taste was ok but not to my liking. Needed better seasoning.

  • Great quality food!
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
I bought this to see what it tasted like in order to decide whether to buy more or not. I was surprised it tasted so good. I was expecting, well, I am really not sure what I was expecting, but it surpassed everything I was thinking. It was not bland, it did not taste like something that could be stored for so long. It actually tasted like a meal I could make from scratch. It was so good in fact that I kind of want more just to eat on a regular basis. My original intent was to try it to see if I wanted more for SHTF situations. I understand people also buy this kind of thing for camping and hiking. It is good enough to eat any time in my opinion. It didn't even need any extra seasoning. Anyway, I ordered an entire bucket of mixed food. I will keep the bucket sealed for now in case the S does indeed HTF, and order more for other uses like camping or just whenever I feel like a quick easy meal. I was impressed with the date on the package as well. I think it said 25 year shelf life, but mine was almost 30 years (see photo). ... show more

  • mountain house delivers, as usual
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
The chili mac with beef is great. It doesn't taste like a freeze dried meal, if you told me it was fresh homemade hamburger helper I'd believe you. Very hearty and filling. I really appreciate the shelf life on mountain house meals too. I've tried some other non-perishable foods, mainly MREs. While I like MREs and they can be fun on account of all the stuff that comes with them, the shelf life is only 5 years. So it's not like you can buy a bunch and leave them in your basement for emergency food purposes. Mountain house meals last 30 years, and I'd be willing to wager they'd be fine even longer, but the company hasn't been around long enough to have officially verified that. Anywho, these are great for camping or any emergency food reason. I do feel like they're a little pricey, but they are very good. I haven't had a mountain house meal that was bad. I've got a few favorites, but they've all been tasty and filling. ... show more

  • Looking for a rootin' tootin' good camp meal?
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
This was the first meal of this type I've tried. We set up camp late, so dinner was prepared in the dark. Prep was super easy, just boil water and wait for the pouch to reconstitute. The flavor was decent, and it was nice to have a hot meal instead of trail mix and granola bars. It has a hint of kick, so if you don't like spicy at all, try a different meal. Be warned though: if you plan on hiking the next day, be sure you're in the back of your hiking party. The beans are bountiful in this pouch. I had to stop numerous times to "enjoy the scenery" while covertly crop dusting the local flora and fauna. The extra propulsion was helpful on those steep hills, but if you're conscientious about global warming and greenhouse games, skip this one because you'll definitely contribute your fair share! ... show more

  • Tasty!
Style: Pouch Pattern Name: Water Reservoir
Tasty and high in protein. I love it! I recommend leaving the hot water in the pouch for double the time it says on the container since it was still a tad crunchy. Also these meals are a little on the expwnsive side. Other than that though, these meals are lightweight and easy to take with you on a hiking trip. I might buy more of these in the future! ... show more
