I don't use FRS/GMRS radio communication much, however I have had plenty of time (years now) to say that these are by far the best ones I could have gotten. It does not appear Motorola has improved the new T600 line that replaced the T400 line (and thus this T460) so this review would likely apply somewhat well to their new models today too, as there is no change in specs. So here's my findings, all of them good or better: 1) The battery life is accurate. However, if you use your own AA NiMH you can get way past 30hrs of use if you run with 2800mAh AAs - the included rechargeable pack is pretty lacking. However, they did not lie about estimated battery life 2) The range is accurate, if you think critically about how radio signals, especially UHF ones, work. Point to point with no obstructions I was actually able to achieve nearly 35mi which impressed me 3) City range is still excellent when using max power on a high power GMRS channel - about 1.0 to 3mi depending on density 4) Highway range is about 10mi without curves or sharp turns, and about 3 to 5mi with turns and curves 5) Voice is clear and very high quality 6) Weather feature is nice to have 7) The overall functionality is great and it's designed well 8) It has more options under the sun than 90% of people would ever use.     • Best Radio I Ever Used
I have used most if not all the walkies Motorola has made over the past 20 years. I used to use them daily in my job. The current model (MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS Talkabout T460 Rechargeable Two-Way Radio Pair (Dark Blue)), in all its color variations, is by far the best. Do not get scared off by people who have less than positive reviews since Motorola has consistently made the highest quality walkies I have seen. Here are my comments on the issues mentioned in reviews: Distance Covered: Of course they do not reach 35 miles unless you have a line of sight. However I can tell you my experience is they consistently get around heavy woods and rolling hills for almost a mile. If you need more use a HAM radio. Not Working Right: If something seems to be working wrong it is probably user error - see the Lockout discussion a few reviews earlier. There are more things these radios do than the average person knows and that is not the radios fault. Kind of like my smart phone. The Screw in the back: I read a review saying they hated the screw in the back since it was hard to use. OMG it is meant to be opened with any coin but a nickel. You do not need a screw driver. And it keeps it waterproof. It is easy to open. Battery Use: Thank god no body complained about this. It is great! Motorola says the rechargeable battery should only last 6ish hours. I have gotten 10-11 hours out of a charge without a problem. Of course duracell disposable batteries are about twice that. I hope this helps. ... show more

Brought these to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota multiple times to communicate between canoes in our group. Worked great as long as you understand the limitations. The range is nowhere near the claims. Expect maybe a couple of miles with a clear line of sight (not the 35 miles that it claims!). It has an IP54 rating which says it can take water splashed from various directions but must be protected from major downpours and submersion. Use this on the slopes or while hiking. Long range plenty of channels. Had these for over a year. Leaving review now because I like to use an item for awhile before I review it.

For what they are they work great. Only complaint is when you go to talk it is 1/4 second wait time before you can talk. Not even a big deal. I'm a manager at a rock yard and bought these for my employees. Everything is going really well so far... Except for the fact that our old fart driver refuses to wear one. The clips are extremely strong and radios are very durable. Like I said, I work at a rock yard and these take a serious beating. The transmission range is great on the property. Line-of-site at about 5 acres straight back. If people go to the gas station 1/8 mile down the road it cuts out completely. Expect to use these in a scenario like mine.. Nothing more. Unless your scenario is peak-to-peak on two separate mountains.. very unlikely. I also bought myself the Red/white T480 because it has FM radio and I can't live without that at my job. The battery life is great for such small radios. I'm getting about 10+ hours per day with mixed usage on my red/white T480 and the T460 blue/black radios stay charged for 15+ hours with mild chatter. They do take a long time to charge but we plug them in at 5pm and they're ready by 7:30am. That's all I care about. If you run your battery out expect 10+ hour charge times as well.. no big deal in my case. I could go on an on but I think I'll stop here. I bought 5 of the blue/black T480 and all arrived perfect and 0 defects. I'm a computer guy and very critical of build quality and durability. These live up to my expectations 100%. If you are a manager and using these with your employees.. Spring and get the Red/white T480 for the FM radio. You deserve it after putting up with their crap. Plus you'll have a different color and people will know who the boss is..lol. I hope this review helped. ... show more
