  • Needs bright sun and cool weather but it works
I'm deaf, J have cochlear implants that use batteries that must be charged every 8 or so hours and I got invited on a weeklong backpacking trip in the white cloud mountains in Idaho. On top of that I'm a photo and phone junkie so I need to be able to charge my batteries and devices otherwise I can't hear and I can't do stuff I enjoy. I'm also borderline broke most of the time with 2.5 kids in college and bills galore so I tend to really obsess over researching, looking for the absolute cheapest but still decent stuff. I already have a 36 W solar panel that I use for regular camping but it's too big and heavy for backpacking so I wanted something foldable that I can carry on a hike but something that still has enough juice to not be in the novelty/toy/impractical category... you know what I mean, those devices that are almost good enough but not quite. well this is the one that seemed like the best fit for my needs so I ordered it. the first couple of times that I tried to use it were disappointing. the weather has been super hot here in the Phoenix area lately (115 degrees kind of hot) and heat can really affect solar panels. It seemed like the charging power was just barely there. I very much doubt this thing puts out 24w when it's that hot, and it IS more heat sensitive than some of the others because the sensor area is black then I tried putting it in the window. where the sun hits it directly, and since the house has AC, the panel is much cooler and it puts out noticeably more power. I was able to charge both my phone (from about 22% to 85% in about an hour and a half and my processor batteries at the same time. then I tried to charge a 26000 mAH power bank. that went from 47% to 72% in the next 4 hours or so but then it sat there because I put it out in the heat (window didn't get sun anymore) I am now testing charging the power bank itself, and will update my review with details but since yesterday I've depended solely on this panel for power for my devices and they are all charged just fine. Of course this is Phoenix, so we have blue skies for months at a time and this panel definitely requires very bright sunlight. I've tried it a little when it was somewat cloudy and I wasn't impressed at all. so I don't know how it will do up north where the sun is less intense, more likely to be cloudy and cooler, but the cool weather should help increase performance as long as it's not cloudy. eventually I'll figure out a way to wire an ammeter in series and get an idea of the actual numbers for the amount of power it produces. i'll report that too ... show more

  • Seems to work as it should...
Bought the Moolsun as an emergency item to have and not for everyday use so take my review as a person using it sparingly. Pros: Compact, fairly lightweight. Cons: where panels fold look like a weak point, cheap kick stand leg. As stated I bought this for emergency use in case power goes out for extended period of time. I only have used it once to test and it did fair to good on my test. Tested on a September, partly cloudy day, in midwest. I plugged an old Iphone 6 that was completely dead in at 11 am and check it every hour to see charging progress moving the panel to keep it pointed at the sun. In the first couple of hours it charged it up to 14% then just seemed to stop charging. At around 3:00 pm the charge was around 14%, when I came back out at 4 pm the phone showed 100% charged. Only thing I can think is some clouds interfered for a couple of those hours. Would I buy this for everyday use, probably not, but for occasional use sure I would get it again. ... show more

  • Pleased with my purchase and binder clip
So far I am very pleased with my Moolsun 24 watt solar charger. Right now in California there is plenty of sun and devices I attach to it charge pretty quickly. It folds down small and seems tough enough to shove in the car when we go off for the day. I have charged cell phones, small power banks, a usb chargeable lantern and a few other devices. There were comments about the solar controller coming lose from the panels so I have been very proactive to protect the connector. I do this by using a binder clip to reduce any tugging on the controller (see pictures) and I use a 10 foot usb chord to make the connection so that I can put the device being charged in shade. When possible I also wrap the usb chord around something to keep the device from being pulled off of the surface on which it is being charged and reduce tension on the controller. A side notes: 1 - be sure that the device is shaded from the sun; an overheated device won't charge correctly and being in full sun could actually damage or kill the device. 2- the solar panel gets REALLY hot in the direct afternoon sun so I use it in the morning and I get it out of the sun as quickly as possible if I am charging in the afternoon. I have a Jackery 240 which I charge with a Jackery 60 watt panel and I use the Moolsun primarily for power banks. ... show more

  • Careful with cords. Best to leave cords in
I let others borrow it and they wiggled the charging port loose, but I liked it enough to buy a second one. I liked its portability and light weight. It was best to leave cords plugged in so i didn't wear on the port (glued to back of panel) and pull it off, exposing soldered wires, especially in extreme heat that weakened glue. In 100 plus heat, it was best to charge battery packs and not the phone directly. Overall satisfied. Great for back packing. ... show more

  • Great at charging/ but slow.
I use this for charging small power banks, at 24 watts I thought it would be quicker, but not. Could take a full day with good sun light .....

  • Direct sun only
This foldable solar panel worked very well actually, IF (and only if) it was exposed to direct sunlight. I had attempted to place it in a window. (PS. The suction cups SUCK LOL .. seriously they're terrible and the seller should be concerned with QA just saying). I have another smaller solar panel in my window that only provides roughly 10 watts, however, it provides something almost all day long even when the sun on the other side of the house. As stated this one being reviewed seemed to stop altogether unless it had direct sun. I will absolutely take this camping and such, but for the purpose of my application didn't work so great. ... show more
