I picked up this set of plug screws to address a common problem; screw holes from removing a scope rail or sight. You can simply put the screw that secured the item back in, but it isn't very practical or sightly to have fastener heads sticking up and if the hole was empty to begin with you're out of luck. This kit from Monstrum nicely addresses these issues. Both sizes of screws (6-48 and 8-40) come with a black oxide finish, seem to be well hardened and a very nice touch that many don't have is the inclusion of blue thread locker on each one. They have a hex/socket drive, which is better IMO than many of these that have a small slot. That might not seem like a big deal at first, but when you are trying to remove one that has been in place for a number of years you will appreciate not having to try to break them loose with a tiny slotted screwdriver. There are 2 reasons I gave this kit four stars instead of five; 1) one of the 6-48 screws was missing (only 9 in kit) and 2) I feel that the price of this kit is a bit high for the number of screws included. I picked up this Monstrum gun plug #6-48 and #8-40 screw set after running into an annoying problem with a scope rail installation on my old Mosberg shotgun. I needed to plug a few pre-drilled holes in the receiver to prevent any dust and dirt getting inside of the receiver, and I quickly realized that #6-48 set screws aren’t something you can just grab at a local hardware store. After some searching, I found this kit and decided it was worth keeping on hand, not just to finish my repair but also as a backup for future gunsmithing projects. The set comes neatly organized with 10 set screws of each type - #6-48 and #8-40. The screws are 1/8-inch in length - allowing for installation flush with the top of the receiver with the proper penetration depth. They’re made from hardened stainless steel, which is more durable than some softer aftermarket screws I’ve handled in the past. They use hex sockets for fastening and the matching hex wrench is included, making it a complete kit right out of the box. Using the screws was straightforward. The threads are clean and precise, so they went into my receiver without any binding or misalignment. They are also pre-treated with a blue threadlocker, so no worries about loosening them due to recoil. I torqued them down to the recommended 15 inch-pounds, and they seated perfectly flush. The finish on the set screws looks professional and matches most black rifle components, which keeps the overall look of the rifle clean. After using them, it’s clear these are not cheap, generic set screws - they’re properly hardened and built for abuse.
