  • Best I found.
I have used Ultra vice twice now to remount a scope on a CZ 512 using the Tipton scope mounting kit (another Tipton product I am glad I bought) The scope mounting process is SO much easier using this vice. I used the four corner adjustments to level the vice and it has not slid around at all while performing jobs like lapping scope rings and torqueing screws. It is a bit heavy which I count as a good thing as that contributes to stability. I read another review that complained of the elevation function not holding up well. I did have one slip down on the barrel end. In my case I retightened and no further problems. The 512 is not very heavy. I could see it happening on heavy weapons though. I may drill and pin the slide at the common positions if that becomes an issue for me. A small hole(s) and a nail(s) should secure it without weakening the device. The frame is metal and the rest is some sort of plastic/resin looking type of material. It was rigid and strong and it held my rifle easily in position for the work I performed. The pads don't look like they would damage a weapon, The adjustable or removable trays are very handy for holding screws, turret caps, tools, locktite and so on, and contribute to the rigidity of the frame. They also serve to help keep things separated and organized so they can be installed in their original places. I looked at several gun vices and thought I saw weak points or features I didn't care for. No product is perfect, but I can tell you I have no remorse on this purchase. ... show more

  • Tipton ultra gun vise
I’ve been using the Tipton Ultra Gun Vise for cleaning, scope mounting, and general firearm maintenance, and overall it’s a very useful workstation if you understand what it’s designed for. First, the big strength is versatility. The adjustable frame and modular layout make it easy to fit different firearms, from AR-style rifles to bolt guns and even pistols. The non-marring contact points are a huge plus—I’ve had zero concerns about scratches or finish damage on wood, polymer, or anodized parts. The removable trays are also more useful than I expected; they actually keep small screws, tools, and parts organized instead of scattered across the bench. Setup is straightforward, and once it’s dialed in, it holds a firearm securely for cleaning, optics mounting, and light maintenance. The adjustable feet help stabilize it on uneven surfaces, which is great if you’re moving between a garage bench and a portable setup. That said, it’s important to set expectations. This is not a heavy-duty gunsmithing vise. If you’re trying to torque barrels, apply high force, or do serious armorer-level work, you’ll quickly notice its limitations. Some of the adjustments rely on plastic components and friction locks, so it can flex slightly under pressure if you really lean into it. In short: * Excellent for cleaning, scope mounting, and general maintenance * Very good firearm protection and flexibility * Not ideal for high-torque or professional gunsmith work For the average shooter or hobbyist, it’s a very convenient and space-saving tool that makes bench work much easier. Just match it to the right expectations and it performs well. Would I recommend it? Yes—for cleaning and maintenance setups, absolutely. For full gunsmithing, I’d pair it with a traditional heavy bench vise instead. ... show more

  • Decent Vise, but needs design changes Decent Vise, but needs design changes
I purchased the Tipton Ultra Vise through Amazon. The Vise arrived in good shape, and as I removed it from the box and began to assemble the pieces onto the device, I knocked one of the chassis pieces off the bench and it hit the concrete floor in my garage. The fall broke one of the adjustment knobs wherethe knob attached to the plastic insert it was designed to loosen and tighten. I did not realize it was broken until I went to screw the knob backwards to loosen the part and the knob completely backed off of the Vise chassis. Looking at the plastic and how it was assembled, the design for this is not very well-made. The piece the knob attached to is very thin plastic and the plastic is extremely brittle. The fall from the bench broke the plastic at the attachment point. Looking at how brittle and thin the plastic is and the fact the entire product is made with knobs attached to the same kind of thin brittle plastic at all tensioing points, I’m quite sure a small amount of torque applied to any of the knobs will break and shatter the plastic. The knobs are going to require gentle handling to avoid breaking. To be fair, I contacted Tipton and they offered to send a replacement piece without question under the warranty. That was a pleasant surprise, especially when the damage was clearly my fault. It is great to have a company that stands behind their products. However, a simple design change both in how thick the plastic is, and the type of plastic being used would probably solve the problems for them and cause a lot less headaches for the end user who purchases one of these. Overall, the Vise looks to be solid and will be a great platform for working on firearms of all types. However, to answer the question from those who asked if this vise could be used as a shooting vise, the answer would be absolutely not. There is no way you could torque down the adjustment knobs, tight enough to hold a rifle steady for firing without damaging the tensioning mechanisms. And the device would not hold up to recoil. The company is so willing to stand behind the product and the device is still functional for what it was intended to be used for. I am only giving it four stars, because a bench vise at this price should not require the user to have to gingerly handle the components and mechanisms to avoid breaking a piece that was designed to loosen and tighten down on and hold work pieces. The thin plastic, and the brittleness of the plastic under the knobs are a major issue. I would still recommend the Vise overall, But would strongly caution anyone who purchases it to avoid overtorquing any part in the adjustment knobs are designed to tighten down on. Hopefully in the future, Tipton may redesign the system and make it more durable. ... show more

  • Perfect for my needs!
This Tipton Ultra gun vise is just perfect for my needs! I questioned whether it would suffice for working on my 1888 Trapdoor Springfield, and the answers I received from previous buyers convinced me to take a chance and buy it! I'm super glad I did!! This vise is a great combination of steel and high quality phenolic/ plastic. It's designed very well, and is easy to assemble. I've found it perfect for working on this heavy, long, and somewhat cumbersome rifle. Thanks to all who answered my questions in this regard! I do not think a better vise can be found, in this price range, and it's most definitely worth every bit of it's cost! As long as you are not doing a ton of torquing, this vise will be perfect for you, as it is for me! Thanks, Tipton, for making this excellent product! • THE vise to buy if you install your own scopes and clean your own guns.
If you work on or clean your guns very often, this is the only gun vise to get. I've tried several others and this one blows them all out of the water. This is the best vise I've used for mounting scopes and getting the reticles to line up vertically. Once you put the gun in this vise and get it where you want it, lock it down, and it doe not move. A wobbly gun vise is the most frustrating and time-consuming obstacle when installing and aligning crosshairs. What used to take me an hour (occasionally) now only takes me 10 minutes on average. The four feet adjust up and down to create a steady base and to completely level out your gun in the vise. For cleaning tasks your rifle will be held in place securely without risking damage to the rifle finishes. The two little parts trays are in the way most of the time if you leave them on the rails. I set them on the bench beside the vise when cleaning or disassembling/reassembling a gun. They hold all of little parts just fine then. The same goes for the AR magwell holder, unless you're working on a small frame AR-15 rifle. It is completely in the way for a large frame AR-10/7.62 rifle since it doesn't fit that magwell anyway. I haven't seen a Tipton magwell holder for a large frame AR yet, but maybe they have one. If they do make one it didn't come with this vise. ... show more
