Description

Simple to use and a pleasure to write with, the Pen+ Ellipse smart pen by Moleskine combines the natural immediacy of expressing yourself on the pages of a notebook with all the advantages of borderless digital creativity. Just like the Moleskine Classic Pens, the Pen+ Ellipse clips to any hard cover, ready to jot down thoughts whenever inspiration strikes. Its shape is inspired by the same rectangular form, while its curved cross-section matches the distinctive rounded edges of the Paper Tablet. Whether your focus is note- taking, sketching or planning, you can choose from a range of compatible paper formats and layouts to build your own Smart Writing System around the Pen+ Ellipse. The Smart Writing System works thanks to Ncoded paper technology that allows the Pen+ Ellipse to recognize individual pages, different Paper Tablets, and specific times and dates in the Smart Diary/Planner. Each pen stroke is captured in real time and immediately transferred to your device and a world of connected apps and services via the Moleskine Notes app. Simply put pen to paper to seamlessly move words, graphics, ideas and events directly to your smartphone or tablet. Watch as your content flows off the page, ready to be developed, saved and shared on screen.

  • You only get a picture of your notebook
Their app syncs with Evernote and some others, but they require access to read your notes and the privacy agreement was broad and complex, in addition to the fact that I had to agree to something they did not provide a link to read. Sounds like a scam to mine my note data. The app itself does not do handwriting transcription, so you might as well just take pictures for free of your notebook pages because that’s all you get out of this device. Your notes won’t be searchable, but they will be backed up. This may be worth it for some, but for me I’d rather use my pencil and a plain old notebook and take pictures of very important pages for backup rather than complicate my life with pen charging, etc. What if I lose my pen+ or leave it at home/work? Additionally, the notebook has pages protruding from the sides to make it appear like a tablet (lame). Without hard cover protection, these will only get destroyed in my backpack and daily life, much as the robust edges of the old style notebook. I’m returning the pen and the notebook. Poor design, poor implementation, lack of features. This seems more like a public beta test to me. Once features to transcribe my handwriting are implemented so I can search my notes, I’ll give it another shot. ... show more

  • Do Not Buy This Beautiful Pen to Draw With
I have been looking for the perfect "smart" pen or just a good analog to digital workflow that uses natural media for decades. I've used/tried just about everything. Yes, I have a digitizer pad (or two) and yes, the Apple Pencil with an iPad Pro (with a matte protector) is the BEST OPTION GOING. That said, I wanted this to work very badly, and it didn't. PROS: - What a pretty object the pen and pad are. - Pen writes nicely, thanks to Zebra refills that don't last very long. - Data transfer on my iP 7+ is smooth. However... most iOS devices DROP THE CONNECTION. - Pressure sensitivity is dialed right in and easy to adjust. Which is great except... CONS: - Pressure data does not export as usable data. It is there in the PDF, but not like you'd hope. The best option is using my iOS I can export DIRECTLY to Adobe Creative Cloud as SVG data. HOWEVER. The data that comes over SUCKS. It's about 1/10th the resolution of the original (open the app, marvel at your smooth curves, your fat to thin natural strokes, got back to Illustrator...it's all gone). I tried this again on a Windows PC, and the SVG isn't even an option. Picture, Word and PowerPoint only. Geh. No MacOS version, and I'm don't have Android anything, so no dice there either. - SVG data is utter garbage. Forget about using this as a basis for sketching then going digital. What you squeeze out of the app is junk. Like a 3rd grader did cursive with a ruler. - PDF data, on the other hand, is quite usable, but still pretty low rez. - - One-shot export. Once it leaves the pen, whatever came across is what you get. What I mean is you can't move this data to the Windows app to look at again, you can only export once. - ANIMATION DOESN'T. A big draw of this system is exporting your drawing as an animation. Sure, you can fire it up and SEE the animation, but forget about exporting it as ANYTHING. In the iOS if you want to show someone the animation you have to MAKE A VIDEO OF THE VIDEO BY USING A SECOND DEVICE POINTED AT THE SCREEN. Which is insanely stupid. On the PC side you can export voice annotation, and there's a button to export video, but it doesn't. At all. There is SOOOO much potential here for a game changer for illustrators, but it's simply not there. Here's the clincher, even though I've used all of the features, it doesn't do what it promises to, and is being returned to Amazon USED and very very sad. Thanks Moleskine and NeoLabs for the lame app, the lousy support, and the beautiful pen. Too bad I won't be keeping it. I really enjoyed it until I tried to use it for anything. There is effectively NO support for this product. Moleskine has no internal team to help, and NEO is not being paid to support the pen they invented and licensed to Moleskine, so there's no love there either. That said, I will be returning this pen and getting the Neo pen. I really liked it, and want the system to work. So in case you Googled for an answer, here it is. The Moleskine Ellipse Smart Writing System is not a tool for artists. It's not bad for handwriting capture, but really, who cares? I can type... ... show more

  • Don't lose the cap
Pen works well but is incompatible with neo pens and app (the underlying tech) and if you lose the cap you are out of luck because they refuse to sell you a replacement. A $179 pen you can't use without getting ink on your pocket all for the sake of a $10 pen cap.

  • Another great Moleskine innovation
Have been subscribed to Moleskine's Timepage and Actions apps for some time now, they are among the most innovative calendar and to-do apps currently available for mobile. Had no idea Moleskine even made the Pen+ Ellipse until recently - was happy to give it a try thanks to the great experience with their mobile apps, and so glad I did. The pen works flawlessly, and the paper tablet is a joy to take notes on. I can quickly sketch out thoughts and send them to my team, and they are easy to pull back up when I need them. Used to take notes on an iPad - writing with plastic on glass wears on you, no matter how precise it is. Analog Moleskine notebooks are obviously great, but you have to flip through pages to find what you need. This is the best of both worlds - you take notes naturally, pen to paper, and a digital backup is available in real-time for sharing and easy to pull up later when you need it. If you're serious about your notes and have a need to share your thoughts from time to time, you'll love this. Recommended with no reservations. ... show more

  • The Pen+ is a real step up from the previous version of the pen
This pen, unlike the previous version, works quite well in full, bright, sunlight. Connects everytime with the phone or windows 10. There are a couple of problems: 1. It is difficult to tell if the pen is on, the LED is quite faint, likely for battery preservation. 2. Battery life is short, especially if you are using the bluetooth connection to your phone or computer. But other than that, the pen performs quite well and I am left handed. I use it in the bright, direct sunlight with no problem. If you have the fat previous version, which worked, in comparison is not comparable. As to the "Paper Tablet", it does seem stupid to look at, but once you start using it, there isn't any problem. Moleskin likely cannot make a profit on more notebook types, but I would certainly buy a smaller version of the "paper tablet" without the pages hanging out. ... show more

  • Does not really sync with Google Calendar
I had high hopes that this product would minimize duplication of efforts. I like to hand write appointments and was excited that this product could sync with google calendar. Even with very clear, concise writing, it still does not sync well in that it does not translate the handwritten text correctly. ... show more
