Comparison / Hard cover vs Soft cover
Size: Pocket Style: Plain
EDIT: 5-1-17 I wrote this review about the older moleskine pocket reporter, not the new "Classic" version Moleskine is selling now. The new "Classic" is very disappointing and I do not recommend it. I have a review of the "Classic", which is all you will find on Amazon, dated April 17, 2017. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************ I like the Moleskine’s and have used the large and pocket sizes for years. For field work, the "reporter" style is far better than the book style, and I’ve learned over the years that any notebook you can carry in your pocket is more convenient than toting a clipboard around. The issue for me was hard cover or soft cover? Both are fine notebooks and you will not go wrong with either. However, I’ve used both now and the bottom line is this: the only advantage of the soft cover is pocket comfort (it’s more forgiving when you sit down). How important is this to you? If you plan to carry this in your pants pocket all day, the hard cover will be very uncomfortable (if you're sitting). You probably carry a cell phone in one pocket, so putting this in the other will be a load. All other advantages go to the hard cover….. ease of taking notes in the field (on your feet), using both sides of the sheets, and durability. Yes, the soft cover can fold completely over, which helps a little, but for serious note taking away from a desk - on your feet, on the bus, in your car, on a park bench, etc. – the hard cover is still the better choice. For me, I keep it in my briefcase or my vehicle until I get out to use it, and then I am on my feet, so pocket comfort is not a concern. What’s more important to you – pocket comfort or writing comfort? My 2 cents, if your notebook will spend more time in your pocket (pants pocket), with only the occasional brief note, get the soft cover; if more time being written in, get the hard cover. Also, if you can carry it in a coat pocket, backpack, briefcase, purse, etc.. I would get the hard cover. ... show more

Awesome for a contractor.
Size: Pocket Style: Plain
I was tired of writing little notes and measurements on my hand, writing shopping lists on whatever scrap of wood was laying around the job site, and trying to draw plans on napkins. I needed something I could carry with me all the time. Too large and I'd leave it in the truck. Too small and I'd lose it in the laundry. This is the perfect size for my back left pocket. An added bonus is that it balances out my wallet and makes driving a lot more comfortable. Within 2 days I carrying this in my pocket I stopped noticing that it was there. Within a week I was filling up pages with everything from coworkers' lunch orders, to email addresses, lists of specialty tools needed for jobs the next day, small sketches and diagrams, and whatever else I wanted to remember. I'm one of the last people that will eventually start using a smart phone, and this greatly helps delay the inevitable. The notebook itself is extremely well made. All the details, from the little pocket in the back, to the detachable pages and the elastic bookmark were well designed and implemented. And the cover feels nice and is really tough. As a contractor, stuff I used every day needs to take a beating, and this little notebook does just that. The paper is nice too, perfect for pencil, and pen, but a sharpie will bleed through. Though, for it's size, a sharpie is too big anyway. The reporter style is perfect for my needs because most of what I use it for is lists. Writing the quantity of an item in the spine of a regular notebook is frustrating. You have to crack it open to really use the full sheet. Oh, and no spiral binding makes this truly comfortable in my pocket. Only thing I'd change if I could change something would be to offer one where every page is removeable. ... show more

Definately one of the best around
Size: Pocket Style: Plain
Moleskin products are expensive, there is no way around that. However, the quality of the product you receive is above and beyond any notebook you can buy commonly. I am a bit of a pen and paper nerd, I routinely buy pens and accessories direct from Japan to get the best and I am always in search of a great substrate to write on. Time and time again I come back to Moleskin and have never been dissappointed. Now the paper may feel a little bit thin to you if you have never had a Moleskin before, but it holds up very well up to a 0.7 mm pen nib with light to moderate pressure. If you are a heavy handed scribe who likes thick pens you may see some bleed-thru but otherwise the most you may encounter is faint ghosting if you really look at the pages. Also, be forewarned, Moleskin paper has a bit of a khaki tint to it which you may or may not like. I think it provides a very nice contrast to both pen and pencil. Personally, I love the Moleskin line and have many of their notebooks in all sizes. ... show more

Great product!
Size: Pocket Style: Ruled
Amazing and durable notebook. I keep it in my back pocket so it is frequently sat on and pulled in and out of my pocket for quick writing. The cover has stood up to my abuse without fail. The pages are the perfect thickness so as to not bleed through. There is a small pocket in the back cover which is perfect for business cards or other small notes you want to keep with you. The elastic on it has held up really well with keeping it closed too! ... show more
