These are the very best grab-bars on the market, IMHO. They are stylish, come in a handy variety of lengths, retain their bright chrome finish for many years so far, and the little rubber safety grips on the back side do indeed provide extra grip security. Installing them might be a bit tricky, (hint - make a mounting template for yourself before start. ..you'll understand when you get there.) Once you've installed one, it's easy-peasy to do more! We have these in every shower and tub in the house, and if we ever down-size, we'll be putting them into our new home, too, for sure! ... show more

Should have taken a photo but it's now mounted on the wall. It is necessary for the installer to remove the mounting flanges from the grab bar. This requires removing 3 small set screws to release the mounting flanges in order to install the snap-on covers that will conceal the mounting screws as well as the set screws. First, be sure to position the bar and make sure it is level and mark the mounting hole locations. prior to removing the mounting flanges. After drilling the holes and securing the flanges with appropriate hardware to insure it will be a solid mount. The 18 inch center to center distance makes it difficult to have all 6 screws hit the wall framing studs which are typically on 16 inch centers. In my case, it was being mounted on an outer wall made of cinder block and concrete anchors were used. If your wall has solid ceramic tile, as was my case, you will need special carbide bits to drill though the ceramic. Regular concrete bits won't do the job! In my case, this Moen bar was replacing the Moen grab bar that was installed by the builder which did not match our choice of modern matte black faucets and towel bars. The grab bar choice was one, brushed chrome art deco! Chose an equal center distance model assuming that one Moen 18" grab bar would be the same for another Moen 18" grab bar. Wrong!!! The new one was about a quarter inch shorter that the the one replaced. Fortunately, the mounting flanges were identical and only had to drill 3 new holes for the 2nd mounting flange. That's when I became educated on drilling through solid ceramic tile! ... show more

When I recently bought my house, there was already a grab bar in the 2nd bathroom. Unfortunately, the finish was peeling and looked horrible. I had 2 options to make it look better - to remove the grab bar entirely and re-tile the section where they drilled for the support screws (costly), or install a new grab bar. I chose to purchase and install a new bar. The tub fixtures were already by Moen and I liked them, so I decided to buy the same brand grab bar to match the finish. Originally, I was going to have my handyman install it, but I got bored one day and opened the box to see what the process would be. To my delight, the existing holes with wall anchors lined up perfectly with the new bar. I read the instructions thoroughly (necessary if you’ve never done it before) and started by hand. I decided to switch to a drill-driver (very gently) to install the 6x 3” screws as I have carpal tunnel. The rest had to be done by hand. The instructions made sense, but I believe that anyone without small hands would have issues tightening the tiny screws that hold the bar to the base. Before the final tightening, I applied clear sealant under the decorative plates, then more around the outsides to keep any water from seeping underneath. I am happy with the result, and honestly quite proud of myself for not having to rely on someone else. But…if holes needed to be drilled, especially through tile, I would certainly have let a professional do it. You need to anchor the bar into wall studs to make it sturdy, and tile can crack if you don’t use the proper drill bits, etc. ... show more

    • Well made. A bit "brighter" than some other brushed nickel fixtures. Not crazy about grips.

Seems well made. Very sturdy. Installation is a little fiddly because you need to peek behind the base covers and work very close to the wall with a little allen wrench (supplied). Came with extra set screws which is good because you need to back them out almost entirely during installation and I dropped one. The color is a bit brighter than my brushed shower valve (Riobel) and shower and tube spouts (Jaclo). It appears from the pics that the handle is completely tubular and round but the inner part of the handle has 3 indents and each has a black silicone grip material. I would have preferred if the entire thing was tubular and might not have bought these had I been able to notice this detail from the picture. For this reason I rate the product 4 stars instead of 5. But if you don't mind this feature then I think you'd be happy with this grab bar. Details say "12 inch" but the overall length is 15" to the outside of the base covers. The posts and mounting brackets are 12" on center. If you mount this vertically over a stud then you can mount both ends into the stud. But if you are going to install horizontally it won't span the distance between standard studs (16" on center). Since I was putting up new shower walls I put in a backing plate between two studs where I wanted the horizontal handle to be mounted. If you can't get at least one end into wood studs or backers (both ends even better) I'm not sure I would trust this or any handle with just hollow-wall anchors. That said, some hollow-wall anchors are rated for quite a lot of weight. Recap: 1) might not match your other brushed fixtures especially if they are more on the pewter side 2) has rubber grips on inner part of handle 3) make sure you can securely mount this or any 12" bar. ... show more
