  • Good, not great...reserve for lightweight items
I love magic arms generally and there is a wide range of quality between the different arms on the market. In my view, this one is middle of the road. It isn't even in the vicinity of the great ones, but it's not junk either. It has good hold if you mount a fairly light item. I use this one to mount a small microphone. It would hold an action cam just fine as well. I would not mount a heavier light on this one. If you need light duty at a decent price, this might be the one for you. ... show more

  • Mixed strengths
The Magic arm clamp is a mixed-bag of design. Some parts really are rigid and strong so they'll stay in place in most situations. This really applies to the middle sections with the Aluminum arms with a lock washer center joint, as well as the design decision that makes it really hard to unscrew the center bolt of clamp side bolt to the point of disassembly. If you're doing some quick work in the field, that sort of safeguard is more important than you would think. The mixed bag part comes with the ball joints at the ends of the arms with no set screw or tightening mechanism, you're really only left to the friction of the ball joints to hold the angles you want. For LED light panels or lightweight cameras like a webcam or GoPro you're probably fine, but if you want to go for even a lightweight Mirrorless DSLR, you're running a risk of the ball joints moving around under load. Maybe you can find a hard stop point when setting up your shot, but with so much of this seemingly well-designed, feels like they took some shortcuts at the end. ... show more

  • Works OK
This isn't the best magic arm I have, but it does work. To get it to really hold, you need to crank down on the locking knob more than I would like. For this reason, I would have preferred a lever type knob instead of the smaller round one. The ball joints on the ends are also not very smooth. It feels like there are burrs in the castings that catch when you are trying to move them around. I'm hoping that will not be quite as bad once they get worn down from being used a little more. The clamp itself is pretty strong. It has rubber boots on the fingers to protect whatever you are clamping to. Unfortunately, the rubber boots also allow for some movement even when you have it tightened down. If I'm clamping this to a post that I don't care about marring, I'll likely just remove the boots, since they come off pretty easily. The shape of the clamp lends itself more for attaching it to a round post rather than something like a shelf, but as long as you don't put much weight on the end, it holds reasonably well even in that situation. Despite some of its weaknesses, as long as you don't expect too much from it this arm does work, and I feel it's a good addition to my camera bag. ... show more

  • Does what it is supposed to, but I'm left wanting a little more...
Background: I'm a film major who never did much with my actual degree so mainly just do hobby videos/etc now in my spare time. However I've seen my fair share of camera gear/accessories like this clamp arm. I was expecting something similar to a microphone boom arm you can clamp to the side of a desk and easily move around and tighten into place. First off, no fault of the item, but definitely smaller than I expected (pic included for reference next to a bottle for scale) Folds up nice and small but the reach is pretty limited. Was hoping to use this to clamp to my desk for close up GoPro shots of opening items, that kind of thing. The tightening system is odd, one twist knob to not only fix the arm in place but tightens the end mount swivels at the same time. As another reviewer noted the swivel ends on the mount are far from smooth, seem to catch on whatever internal mechanism they use. Clamp seems like it would do better on some kind of rail or tube, might end up using this on a golf cart for GoPro shots, tough to say, nice to have in the camera bag though. ... show more

  • A valuable, affordable tool.
Photo shows standard sized tripod, a velbon cx440. I’m a cheap person that uses the minimum quality tool needed to get by, unless I need to invest in something that has a lot of use. I’m a hobbyist when it comes to filming, mostly to segue art, personal use photo taking etc. I got this specifically to use as a light/mic mount, and it does so well! As other reviewers notated, one knob adjusts both the angle and tightness, which is a little weird, but not bad. It’s pretty durable and could easily hold 3-5lbs of weight on the ball joint. Unfortunately that’s probably the max, so enthusiasts with heavy equipment need to look elsewhere. I genuinely like it, but there’s quirks about the design that could be improved. Overall, excellent for people like me with a basic DSLR and iPhone needing to do some personal shots/filming. ... show more

  • Small but well built
OK, so I thought this was going to be a little larger than what it was, but that was my fault for not reading the description more fully. That said, its definitely sturdy construction and does its job perfectly. Once you get the hang of it, placing it properly works well, but it will have you scratching your head for a few minutes. I took a star off only because its small size makes it only usable in certain situations, thats not a huge downside but it is little bit of an issue for my use. Overall for its price its about right and will definitely earn its spot in my gear bag. ... show more

  • Nice size, good clamp
I deducted one star because I really had to tighten the arm to stop it from moving the ball joints. Granted I was putting a lot of pressure on them to see if they would move (when I tightened it up super tight they didn’t budge) but compared to other smart arms I surprised I’d have to tighten as much as I did. Still, does the trick. Maybe don’t put anything too heavy on this arm? A good pro, small light or insta cam would work great! ... show more

  • Nice Clamp Size
The best thing about this is the clamp. The arm is good for lightweight devices, because there is one knob to tighten it up. The build quality is solid and almost all metal. The arm is pretty stable and works well when you mount it. I would not trust it with any type of DSLR Camera, but for a Go Pro or webcam it should be perfect. I have another type of arm like this and this one seems better to me because it can be mounted on a monitor arm. ... show more
