  • Charges trolling motor batteries very well...
Size: 5 AMPS Style: 2 Bank
I got tired of always busting out the battery charger from the garage to set it up on the boat to charge the trolling motor batteries and then removing it again to put it away before heading out again. I know it doesn't take a lot of time to do that, but I prefer to be doing fun stuff instead of a lot of back and forth and crawling in and out of the boat. With this charger, I can just plug it in while standing outside of my boat and be done. I researched several chargers and decided to go with the Minn Kota because it is one of the charges on the market that has the electronics to charge batteries without damaging them. My boat is not very big, but I found a spot where I could bolt it onto wood under the driver's console. Even though the unit is large, it still did not interfere with my feet. The reason to mount it to wood is to prevent the case of the charger from grounding to the metal components of the boat. If you don't have a wood panel on your boat to mount it, you can bolt a piece of wood to a metal surface and then mount the charger to the wood. It has indicator lights to let you know what is going on with the charging. There are two lights per battery bank that change color or flash to give different indications of the status. The charge time is perfect. It charges my large deep cell batteries in about 7 hours. My other charger was a 2 amp and it took 13 to 14 hours. Even though a 2 amp charger is supposed to give a much better charge, this Minn Kota 5 amp per bank charger made my batteries work much better because of its better float charge technology. The battery connections are made of steel to help prevent moisture corrosion. Each bank has a fuse in the cord that is encased in a water resistant rubber case. The cords are a good length, but it would be nice to have about 12" longer. One of the cords was just barely long enough to reach the second battery. However, the instructions do tell you how to add wire to the cords. It has a power cord to plug into an outlet or extension cord. One option I really like about this charger is that it comes with a separate small mount to plug in the power cord when not in use. It is a very simple piece, but it helps to protect the plug, and it helps to keep it out of the way and from jumping around when you are on rough water. Since I can plug the cord into this mount when not in use, I then always know where the end of the cord is so that I can reach it from outside the boat without have to dig for the cord. The packaging was not durable at all. The unit is heavy, but the manufacturer only used conventional cardboard boxing instead of double wall sturdy boxing with foam cushioning inside. I tend to think the charger would not get damaged from poor handling since the casing of it is very durable, but check your charger when it arrives for any damage just in case. Overall, I think I made a great choice for a deep cell battery charger. My batteries work better and the charge time is perfect for an overnight charge. Installation was easy (other than the obvious difficulties I had removing panels to hide cords behind them). I no longer have to fiddle with my batteries connecting and disconnecting the charger and I get longer battery time on the water when trolling. Update: I've had this on my boat for a year and have this charger plugged in almost every day (except during the winter). It has performed very well with no trouble at all. In a few months, I will convert to a 24 volt trolling motor, but the nice thing about this charger is that it will work with 12 or 24 volt configurations. ... show more

  • Reliable, won't overcharge, won't boil off your wet cells water. No maintenance required.
Size: 5 AMPS Style: 2 Bank
I've used this charger now for a year or so. It kept my boat batteries charged over the winter. Since my boat is stored away from my home, sometimes I would leave it plugged in for 4 or 5 weeks before getting by and unplugging it for a few weeks. While plugged up for the extended time this charger seems to have not over charged my batteries or boiled off the water (they are lead acid wet cell). I'm very happy with this onboard charger. ... show more

  • More durable than I ever expected and works great
Size: 5 AMPS Style: 2 Bank
When I added a trolling motor and deep cycle battery to my Mitzi Skiff I bought this to keep the batteries charged. Both batteries and this charger are in the engine well area. My boat stays on a drive on lift but he back of the boat extends outside the roof line of my dock. By keeping this plugged in it keeps the bilge working when it rains. Recently we forgot to plug it in and then got a ton of rain and the entire charger was under water for at least a day. We drained everything out and let this sit for a few days. I was really surprised with we tried it and it worked fine. I just purchased a second one for another boat with a dual battery setup to maintain the batteries in the winter when that boat is in my warehouse for the winter. UPDATE Nov 2013 - Great customer support. One of the two banks quit charging so I called support. Told me to check the fuses and sure enough they were blown. I replace the fuses and the immediately blew again so called support back. They sent me out a replacement right away with a return box for the defective one. Great support ... show more
