  • Good miniature paint - worth it over the main brands?
I have only been painting miniatures for a few years now, but as many of us in the hobby tend to do, I have amassed quite a collection of miniature paints. I am primarily comparing these paints with my collection from Army Painter (Warpaints Fanatic), Two Thin Coats, and Games Workshop (Citadel). First off - value. There's no way to overstate this, these are going to be much cheaper per mL than any of the main brands in miniature painting. That's expected, I think, and is worth keeping in mind. You're going to get a big variety of colors here, and if you're comfortable mixing to fill in any gaps, you won't really need more basic colors. Quality. In many ways, this can be subjective, but I have to admit I did not find using these noticeably different than my regular paints. I found the opacity to be broadly similar, where good coverage took two or three thin (diluted) coats for most colors. Whites and yellows are always difficult, and I tend to build those up in layers by doing an undercoat of a color with a thicker opacity, like orange or grey. The metallics are quite thin already, so I would not advise thinning those much other than to ensure they flow nicely, but these are perhaps the ones you might find the most disappointing and need to do a few extra coats. Paint selection. I've mentioned this above briefly, but I do believe this is an excellent selection of colors for most people. I have way more paints than I need or use regularly, and if I limit myself to just these colors, I really can still paint everything I am used to, with one significant exception. There are no washes in this set! I think that's a big oversight, and including even one wash (brown or black) would really make this an all-in-one set for a beginner or somebody trying to build a collection. If you already have a bunch of paints, sure, you likely have washes, but in that case, I don't think you're the target market for this product. Finally, I want to comment on the included brush. It's fantastic! It claims to be kolinsky sable and I find that hard to believe considering the price and source, but I do believe it is a natural hair brush or at the very least a blend of natural and synthetic. Most of these sets include a poor synthetic which will hook quickly, but I've painted a warband of 6 models using primarily just the included brush, and as long as I take appropriate care of it, it is still holding its hook. I actually will consider buying a set of these brushes from Golden Maple to fill in my brush collection. I know a lot of people think beginners should start with a synthetic brush they're going to tear up as they learn, but I remember being so frustrated with my early synthetic brushes hooking that once I started using hair brushes, I enjoyed the hobby much more. Kudos to Golden Maple for including a nice brush in this set! In deciding on my star review for this, I am tempted to remove a star for the lack of a wash, but the inclusion of the nice brush more than makes up for it in my opinion so I am sticking with five stars. ... show more

  • IMPRESSIVE PAINT: Colors, Application, Results, & Easy Cleanup! Decent Brush Included
The brush is an added bonus, size #0, that comes to a nice point—expected with quality brushes. This brush handles as well as some of my pricey sable and decent synthetic brushes. (I am picky about brushes, having worked in commercial art, graphics, and fine arts; many pieces in private homes nationally.) In addition, the paints are held snugly in place with individual form-fitting spaces for which the bottles snap into its space. They are so solid when snapped into place that the tray can be stored on the vertical, with the paints in the spaces, with or without the box—i.e. so the bottles are upright. I use nail polish shelves for all of my acrylic paints and am able to store this on the vertical between the 2- 7-tier nail polish shelves that hold my acrylic bottle paints. NOTE: I only hand paint and do not use an airbrush, so I can't comment about how this paint works in an airbrush. As well, I am not a miniature figure-game model painter. I paint details on the wooden and plastic ship/boat models and details on military models that I build—either wooden or plastic. PAINTS: A good color selection, including silver and gold. The colors are rich and vivid both in the bottles and after painted on a surface that has dried. I was amazed that only one coat of silver was needed on plastic primed in white or black. (Metal colors always “pop” and look better over a black undercoat.) I happened to have some details needing paint on both white primed and black primed. The other colors may need a couple of coats. Since wood absorbs, 2 to 3 coats were needed on unprimed wood. (I had no primed wood on hand at this time.) It is not unusual to need 2 or 3 coats of acrylic between drying on either wood or plastic. (For reference: I am working on completing a plastic Jayhawk USCG Centennial helicopter in the military yellow for which I used the well-known model paint brand that begins with “V”, and it took 8 coats of the yellow to cover well! Now add easy water clean up and competitive price, for a 5-star product! ... show more
