  • Great Solid Compact Drill Press
I use this drill for gunsmithing. For a compact bench top drill press it feels very solid and works great! Wish it hand better handles but the actual drill is great! Perfect for small projects, and even at the slowest speed it's pretty fast, Perfect for small drill bits.

  • Good addition to my shop, with small footprint
I punched some holes through one of my metal work tables and bolted this drill press down so it would be stationary. Then I put in a drill bit, approximately 3/8", and drilled a couple of holes through some mild 1/4" steel. I tried out the different speeds and they all worked very well in drilling, but for hard metals it would be better if it could be slowed down more to not overheat the bits. Of course that cuts the power because the speed selector slows down the motor instead of using a gearbox, so keeping the speed up is necessary to preserve the motor. I used cutting oil to lubricate the bit and keep it cool. All in all I thought the unit performed very well and is surprisingly heavy for its small size. The drill head can be easily moved up and down the stem for thicker or thinner projects, and it can even be turned around to drill beside the table if needed for more room. The speed selector works well but even the slowest speed is still pretty fast for metal; once again that would be because running it too slow would simply cut too much power and the motor would likely overheat. My advice is don't overpower the motor; just let it do the work and be sure to keep the RPM's up. It should hold up for a long time. The on/off switch is large, red, and in the perfect location for easy use. There was a small table vise included as well as a box of mixed drill bits for wood, metal, and concrete. They seem to be decent quality. There was a set of extra motor brushes also included. The chuck seems to be very good quality and should last: It came with a chuck key. This drill press is capable of some pretty large jobs but take care to let the motor have time to power through. That's not to say that the motor is weak, because it's not, and it did a good job for me on some pretty thick steel. One more thing I want to mention that I really like are the 3 handles that lower the drill. That's so much better than the single handle that most small drills use. It means that there is always a handle in an accessible location to make drilling easier and more controllable. In today's market this drill press is probably worth the asking price, and will be really handy to me in my knife making hobby. This is a great tool for craftsmen who do hobby work or for handymen to use for home projects. ... show more

  • appreciate the direct drive function, but the fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired
I really wanted to love this value mini drill press, and in some ways it is "good enough". For that i mean that if you need a quick and dirty easy hole drilled, even in a semi-repeatable fashion (more on that in a moment), then this is a decent value option. The direct drive nature of it means you're not dealing with belts to get your speed just right which is nice, although it also means you are dealing with a brushed motor which gets really loud. If you are wearing your proper PPE, you can toss on some hearing protection and not be too bothered by it, but if you use it in a shop with other people, it might be a bit grating for them. the performance of the drill press is good in some ways, but lacking in others, firstly the rotation around the axis has little to no wobble, which is great for trying to make straight holes, however there is a weird back and forth issue that has me really not pleased. The press is retraced using a normal spring (which in and of itself is.... eh due to a spring slowly losing it's elasticity over time), but the control for how easily it can retract is controlled by 3 set screws on the guide rail, too tight and it doesn't go down or retract, too light and.... this is where the big issue comes in, if the set screws are even a hair bit too loose, you get massive deflection when pressing into your materials, leading to off center drilled holes. If you tighten the screws just tight enough that your handles spin and move the drill press down, then you can eliminate a large amount of this deflection, however just due to the way the rail system works, you can't eliminate it entirely. Overall i think this might not quite have the value even at the lower price point, but i DO think it's a lot more convenient for me than one of those manual drill guides. I will use it for the occasional project that needs some rough holes, but for precision, i'll either have to use a router with template, or a different drill press. One final thing that was a big con in my book was the fact that although it includes a drill press vise, the slots in the cast iron base were extremely poorly machined, so the screws to secure down the vise wouldn't fit. I had to take a steel file to the slots to widen them and de-burr them enough to allow it to slide through the slot. It's something i only had to do once, but it was still a pain. ... show more
