I had two books that I bought, about working with silver, and soldering jewelry, and I just got to the point that I was so frustrated! I knew there had to be better information out there. Luckily I stumbled upon this book! Now that I've used, and still use this book as a bible about the craft, I am so much farther ahead than I would be if I had stuck with the first two books! I would have wasted good money, and time too, on supplies I didn't need, and samplers, that had me use materials that I probably wouldn't use in a "real life" scenario. The other thing, and maybe the best thing, is I was introduced to the Metalsmith Society. A place you must join as I did, and which is run by the author of this book. Along with jewelers of every level where you can get support, useful tips, ask questions, and feel supported through your journey into learning about the craft. Think of this book as a must have textbook that goes with the continuing online support and education you can get from being part of a group of people who are happy to share they're knowledge from where ever they may be along they're journey! A few months ago my wife took up jewelry making at my suggestion - she loves her pieces she's bought over the years and I started to feel like it was something she'd find joy in making herself. I was right: this has become a great passion and she spends a good deal of time every week reading, researching, and improving her skill set. She found Metalsmith Society’s Guide to Jewelry Making: Tips, Techniques & Tutorials... online having heard of the author, Corkie Bolton, through her research. So apparently Ms. Bolton is a successful jewelry designer and crafter and from what my wife was finding online, also teacher. She had to get the book, so we grabbed it and my wife is thrilled. She spends her free time reading, learning, reviewing sections, and applying things while she's in class. The book and class have given her enough confidence and knowledge that she's now buying her own tools for home and beginning to practice here. This weekend she attended her first gem show and felt things she has learned from both her instructor and Ms. Bolton helped her feel confident enough to go - and buy a number of stones. I tried to give you a flavor of the book via the photos without giving away the farm. I think what I take away from spending my own time going through, is how well Ms. Bolton is at 1. images, 2. instructions, and 3. explanations that combine to help one understand individual concepts. Certainly this coupled with the things my wife is learning in class is stronger than the book on it's own. Yet my wife feels things she has not yet been exposed to in class she would feel comfortable trying at home - I think that speaks to the book being well written. Not only does Ms. Bolton provide well thought out and provided steps and explanations for creating in various methods, but pay attention to the Resources section - it is a good one. In addition to this book, Metalsmith Society’s Guide to Jewelry Making: Tips, Techniques & Tutorials..., Ms. Bolton operates a website and the Metalsmith Society online. There you'll find even more resources and items for purchase that support what she writes about and how she helps - what I think are - beginner to intermediate metalsmiths in learning and expanding their knowledge and craft. In the end, this book, Metalsmith Society’s Guide to Jewelry Making: Tips, Techniques & Tutorials... is a great support and teaching tool for my wife and she's very pleased with having it. Love this book! It has everything. I was just looking for a quick step by step process to remind me from my in person classes but it has so much more information than I have learned so far. Amazing book! Only wish that it was set on a spiral bound instead of traditional. Still works okay as it doesn’t flip closed easily. But there is only so much space available in your work area. ... show more
