Installation was very simple. This is a must-have for any boat owner with a Mercury motor! It makes keeping track of maintenance and hours so much easier! It comes with a free app that you download on your phone to keep track of your hours, maintenance records, real-time issues with the motor, and etc. I highly recommend this product!     • It’s handy for getting engine hours
I bought this to use to check engine hours on used bass boats I was looking at. The one I ended up buying, the seller told me he thought the Mercury 225 Optimax had around 500 hours. I plugged this in to the outboard, and 2 minutes later I found it only had 292 hours. It has an easy to use app you can download to your phone and monitor certain engine parameters while running down the lake or river. It’s not an in depth diagnostic tool, but for what it cost, it’s worth it in my opinion. The app could be a little easier to navigate, but read the instructions and you will find what you are looking for. ... show more

    • Finally know engine hours and track fuel usage
For those with outboards, separate gas tanks with no sending unit and no gauges, this is a necessity - even if you have gauges. You need to know your hours for maintenance alone, without that, you might as well be throwing money down the damn drain with either, a) unnecessary maintenance/oil changes, b)not doing maintenance when you're supposed to - leading to costly damage. The other savings you get is from the performance reporting - it will tell you your gallons per hour at which RPM and what MPH on a chart. You are empowered to see what the sweet spot is for mileage and speed. Not to mention now you know what to expect fuel wise, not getting stranded having to pay for a boat tow - or sissy footing back to the dock "to be on the safe side" - nah bro, get your time and moneys worth. There's a lot of other things this does for you to, but does that even matter with what I've just said? Buy it now! ... show more

    • Works great with my 2009 Mercury 60HP Bigfoot 4-stroke!
I have a cheap pontoon boat with minimal analog gauges, so I installed this Smartcraft Bluetooth adapter on the engine hoping to get more engine stats. I am very pleased with this device and the related Android app so far. The unit was easy to attach to the wiring harness and secure under the engine cowl. I have had no problems with the Bluetooth connection to my phone at the helm, which is about 10 feet from the engine. I like knowing my precise engine RPM, and it was reassuring to see that my boat's analog tachometer is reasonably accurate. My boat was not equipped with a speedometer, so it is nice that the app reports speed using the phone's GPS. My boat was also not equipped with an engine hour meter, and I had no idea how many hours were on the engine because I bought the boat used. This little device solved that problem for me and the app conveniently tracks service needs based on engine hours. My favorite feature of this device and its software is that it estimates fuel consumption and calculates gallons per hour, miles per gallon, and distance/time to empty based on how many gallons you tell it you've added to the tank. The only disappointment that I've had with this device and its app is that it does not report engine oil pressure or cooling water temp. However, that may be a limitation of my engine's instrumentation, or it could be that I have just not found it in the app yet! I do recommend adding a USB charging port to your boat for your phone if you don't already have one. Running the app continuously for several hours takes a toll on my phone's battery. ... show more
