  • This is the one. A++
This is a fabulous rower and honestly such a steal for this price. Because it’s magnetic, it’s whisper-quiet, unlike water or air rowers (including the infamous Concept 2). This means I can easily watch a TV show or YouTube video while rowing! And it feels every bit as sturdy as the professional rowers at the gym. I got this rower because I’m trying to work off the “quarantine 15” and go back down to my normal clothing size from the Before-Covid Times. I live in a region of the country where the weather is objectively terrible for six months out of the year, so being able to work out indoors is a must. I like that a rower allows you to do cardio (lighter resistance at a faster rate) or strength-building (more resistance at a slower rate), and that it’s a full-body workout. This rower was easy to assemble and took my husband and me about 15 minutes, working together. (A huge time savings was thanks to his DeWalt drill, which we used as an electric screwdriver once we found a matching bit.) The rower comes with all the hardware and a special tool for winding the screws, so you definitely don’t need to use power tools; but if you do, assembly will go WAY faster. I was a little worried about the seat not being as cushy as I had hoped, but my fears were allayed as soon as I tried a stroke. The seat is shockingly comfortable. It is molded with two “cheek” indents as well as a special carve-out for the tailbone, which makes it super comfy through the entire rowing motion, from chase to finish and then back through recovery. The pull bar is nicely/sufficiently padded with a thin layer of foam that stays grippy even when you’re sweating (ask me how I know, lol), and the strap/cable is super thick and rugged. The seat glides SO smoothly. The foot-holds rotate effortlessly. (My machine doesn’t have a scraping issue with the peg described by another reviewer.) This thing seems indestructible and is honestly one of the best pieces of home gym equipment I’ve ever seen. The display even has a little shelf to hold a phone or tablet in place! You do need to place it either on carpet or on a grippy gym mat, as it has a tendency to scoot around on smooth floors otherwise. I did my first five strokes and then quickly put a spare gym mat below it. Hasn’t moved since. I like the magnetic resistance level options. I’m a petite 30-something woman and new to rowing, and so I started on level 1. That definitely felt like enough resistance for a beginner, and after using the rower for two weeks, just earlier today I moved up to level 2. My husband, a muscular professional carpenter, started at level 6 and feels it gives him a good cardio workout. He moves it up to 7 or 8 if he wants to focus more on strength-building (he doesn’t have much need for that, though, because he lifts heavy things all day at work). The ONLY downsides I’ve found are: 1) I wish there was a little more room in the drive train/with the pull bar at the catch (beginning of the rowing stroke) and at the end of the recovery — both being positions where your shins are vertical and your arms are fully extended in front of you, with your body leaning slightly forward at a 1:00 angle. My arms aren’t particularly long, but the pull bar makes contact with its housing at this stage. You can see with a Concept 2 rower that there’s more length in the drive train and that the pull bar cannot make contact with the housing at any point in the stroke. This is a minor quibble and is fortunately not preventing me from maintaining good form or competing a full stroke, but if you’re super tall with long arms, I could see how this might be annoying. 2) I wish the display let you choose a metric to stay on. As it is, it endlessly cycles through total time spent, theoretical distance rowed, total number of strokes, strokes per minute, calories burned, and heart rate. I’d really like to keep it on strokes per minute, but I haven’t found a way to do that. Other than those two items, I haven’t found anything I don’t like about this machine. If you’re in the market for a rower, one important thing to look for is a digital display located ABOVE the pull bar so that you have a clear, unobstructed view as you’re rowing. This is one of the only rowers I could find in the ~$300 range whose display isn’t blocked by the pull bar during active rowing. If you’re new like me, I also recommend watching Concept 2’s YouTube videos on proper rowing technique to get you started. Rowing is a full-body workout, but only if you are doing it correctly — and even though it looks easy, apparently most people are rowing wrong. I would have been one of them had I not invested a few minutes in learning the proper form and technique at the beginning of my journey, and I still use those videos occasionally as warm-ups. ... show more

  • Quality Rower
I do tons Of research and always expect the best results. This Merax rower did not disappoint! First of all it’s the quietest, smoothest ride I’ve had, even above the old and new Concept2’s I’ve used at the gym. The belt tension is consistent (concentric thru eccentric) all the way through from catch, drive, finish and recovery! As a 64 yr old woman who’s totally out of shape at 260+lbs, but know what it is to be in kick ass shape (I used to be a successful fitness trainer) the resistance on this machine will be more than sufficient to get me into great shape, though even at its highest tension setting, it would have been easy when I was in great shape. No matter, if you only want to row for cardio, it doesn’t matter if you’re in peak shape, you will get more than your money’s worth with this Merax rower. Second, I opted for a non foldable machine because of my weight and didn’t want to run the chance of having the joint jiggle or make the slightest noise over time. Another thing was finding a machine that could hold a max weight of 275 to 300 lbs that I could afford, as that one requirement in my searches kept bring up machines that were over $1500, a few at around $500, and this black & gold Merax at $300. Additionally, every folding machine I investigated (hundreds of them, cheap to expensive) require unscrewing one or two knobs, folding the rail upwards, then re-screwing the knob(s) into the bottom side of rail - too much f’n work every time I want to use the thing, which means I wouldn’t be using it. Of course if you live in low ceiling quarters, this machine may not work for you unless you give it a permanent horizontal space to sit, and if that’s the case my low ceiling friend, buy this Merax! The wheels (on the housing side) roll smoothly wether on hard or carpeted surfaces. The machine is easy to maneuver for storage and the display panel folds flat onto the wheel casing which gives the machine a footprint of 19” wide by 23” long when standing, less than 4 cubic feet of space - I LOVE it! The display panel isn’t much to write home about but keeps track of the basics. I don’t need it as I row with a Quest 2 VR headset on and let the VZFit app keep track of my trip progress. Stationary exercise is totally enhanced by the sense of moving forward that VR offers. I’ve also used it with the HoloFit app, which has a rowing mode, it’s great but provides far too many distractions side to side of the field of vision that may cause injury to the back from cervical to lumbar vertebrae, but may not feel it right away, but you’ll feel it later. I have been using my rower everyday for two weeks and the only things I’d change on it are making the foot pedals stationary and suited for female feet, but I’m working on resolving this issue, either by retrofitting it or permanently affixing the pedals and putting in something to raise my feet on them to get the most out of the strap which now wraps only over my toes. Each day I thank myself for deciding on this Merax magnetic rowing machine! I’m setting a reminder to update my review at the six month mark. Until then, buy this machine, you won’t regret it! ... show more

  • Worth the Wait
It took a little longer than expected to arrive but once it got here it was relatively easy to put together. The have the different parts of the hardware separated into the various packets to match each step in the manual

  • Great affordable rower!
I've had this rower for over a month now and I am pleasantly surprised. I'm new to rowing and didn't want to spend big money on a rowing machine yet. After using this rower I don't think I will ever need to spend more. I get a great workout on this machine! It is extremely quiet! Almost as quiet as my spin bike. You won't hear it at all in another room of your home. Rowing motion is smooth and the resistance is very strong. I'm 6'3" and 250lbs and this machine fits me perfectly. I can fully extend my arms and legs for proper rowing motion. Computer is very basic but gets the job done. My smartwatch accurately keeps track of everything I need while rowing, including stroke count so I don't need too much tech on the machine. If you're a rowing newbie or big&tall this machine is money well spent. Tip: On smooth wood/tile floors put an exercise mat under the feel to prevent machine from sliding while rowing. ... show more
