I cover the item with a bed sheet and change every week. I wouldn't mind using this item for myself, my bedroom mattress is a cal-king memory foam mattress. I am starting to notice a matting of the fluffy area, but the futon is still soft. The bed is over hardwood floor and rolled out shag carpet. The item is significantly more expensive than a play mat, but I know it's safer than plastic and can be used for a long time and other things. Iโ€™m a 5,10 165~lb male and a side sleeper. I deploy this onto my hardwood floor and am able to safely sleep on my side. Itโ€™s pretty much a mattress. The different textures on each side came in handy. I donโ€™t like wooly like texture, but it feels comfortable against my bare legs. I switched to this from a traditional bed, as I had moved into a smaller living situation, and the ability to roll this up if needing more space helps a lot. I am 5'10 at 240 pounds. When laying on my side, on my back, or stomach, the bed stays firm and keeps me elevated. The only time I would say you will be touching the floor underneath the bed is when you're sitting on. Still more cushion then, than even sitting on the floor directly. The Sherpa side keeps me very warm, and the otherside is much cooler. This is great for winter, or summer. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5. My only complaints would be the fact the Sherpa side catches a lot of debris, and the bed only came with two straps when rolling the bed up.
