  • Incredibly sturdy and very spacious
Size: 17-inch Color: Black
I bought this bag for my college nursing bookload. In the past, I've also tended to carry in my school bags everything that I could ever conceivably need for any situation—this has been an issue on my back in the past, so a rolling backpack especially was important to me to get for that reason as well. I had bought another rolling backpack on Amazon before for a similar price, but it didn't have as many pockets as it first appeared, and the ones it did competed with the other pockets around it for space, so if you used one pocket then the rest would be inaccessible. With one minor exception, every pocket in this bag does not have this issue. There are a very large number of pockets in this bag, especially in the forward compartments, but there are still enough in the main compartment that I can keep my soft books, papers, and hard books all separate from one other. Even when it's cramped to capacity, the zipper holding the compartment together doesn't feel at any structural risk. The rod that runs through the back of the bag and into the handle is not separated from the main compartment's back by anything but a somewhat thin material, and you can feel through to it with a hand. There's a soft and thin styrofoam lining that helps keep it from jutting against the rest of what you might store in the main compartment, but the cloth separating back can be opened to put more stuffing there if you're worried about it. Putting more in there to buffer around the rod and make sure it doesn't push against your things shouldn't decrease space by much of anything. I haven't done anything with it yet, as the styrofoam lining is effective enough for me. The handle itself is a little bit testy sometimes when you try to push it back down, but that feels like such a nitpick compared to everything else the bag does well. It's surprisingly light on its own, and its backpack straps fold up extremely, extremely neatly so that you don't have to deal with fighting them ever. They attach to the bottom of the bag by a stable hook when you want to use them, and they can detach to tuck away tightly and completely when you're done with them. There's no having to feed them through straps and adjusting and readjusting them each time you want to put them on. I only switch this to be a backpack on my back when I'm trudging through snow for up to fifteen minutes, but I don't find getting it together very difficult. It's not comfortable when worn that way, but this bag has the most effective design I can think of for backpack straps on what should generally be a rolling backpack. It has two bottle holders on each side of the bag which are made out of cloth on the bottom with more mesh towards the top. They're very sturdy, and so far I haven't had issues with putting water bottles in either one, so long as it doesn't have a really weirdly large base. I'm not afraid of this part of the bag breaking over time: it's not flimsy at all. Another small thing about the extended handle is that it's surprisingly not uncomfortable to use as someone who's 5'3", but there's a lot of room that I think that someone much taller than me wouldn't be uncomfortable at all using it. I'm on the very shorter end of comfortable use. The bag is capable of handling water (or, well, melted fallen snow, from where I'm from) to an extent, but I don't think you could throw it in a pool. It's just the kind of water resistant that you would hope to expect from a good backpack, where it can handle the elements to a reasonable (but not magical) extent. I jam this thing full of stuff. Occasionally, I have to put it in a tall and narrow school locker. It fits in perfectly neatly, and I don't have to fight to pull it out. It kind of shocked me when I first saw it manage that. Given its surprising quality, I would struggle to justify buying a different bag at this price point. I can't think of any particular issues other than what I mentioned further up. I don't really post reviews, but I feel obligated to post one to glow about this backpack because it's been just so reliable. I'll return to this review in a few months to update it based on how the backpack holds up over time. ... show more

  • Perfect Size for a Carry-On
Size: 17-inch Color: Black
I do a lot of flying and although I check a bag, I use a carry-on for layovers and overnights. This bag is a replacement for a slightly smaller bag from a different manufacturer. The larger size is better for carrying capacity but also for use as a roller bag. The extra couple of inches of height make for easier use as a roller when the handle is extended. It has the standard assortment of features and is very well made. A good value for the money. ... show more

  • Easy to alternate between wheeled bag and backpack without stopping to adjust!
Size: 17-inch Color: Black
I was looking for a backpack to replace my 15+ year old Samsonite that has reached the end of the road. I wanted something that would allow me to use the wheels whenever I wanted, but also switch over to the straps quickly without having to zip or unzip a compartment/flap first. The ability to switch quickly between carrying it as a backpack and dragging it as a wheeled bag does not disappoint. This is especially important to me when I am boarding/exiting a plane as I have historically traveled over 200,000 miles per year - so that's a lot of flights. I've been on half a dozen flights so far with this bag, not to mention lugging it back and forth to the office almost daily when I am not on the road, and it has functioned beautifully whether using it has a backpack or a wheelie bag. Switching between the two is just a matter of grabbing the handle and dropping the bag to the ground. I just tuck the straps into the pocket up near where the handle comes out when they aren't in use to shorten them a bit so they don't interfere with the wheels. No unhooking is necessary, although you could unclip them and store them completely out of sight if you want to. Also, speaking of the straps, they are quite long (the actual nylon material, not the padded parts), but rather than cut them I bought a couple 1" Webbing Ending Clip Quick Slip Keeper Adjusting Strap Buckles to keep things organized and from dragging on the ground while the wheels are in use - works like a charm. The compartments themselves are just right for my needs - I especially like the laptop sleeve inside the main compartment, which keeps my computer and/or tablet from sliding all over the place in an otherwise cavernous space. There's also a separately zipped narrower chamber that is perfect for my notebooks, and even that has a mesh pocket to keep items organized if desired (perfect for a secondary electronic device like a tablet). The smaller zippered pockets provide ample spaces and ways to store all my smaller stuff (keys, wireless mouse, earbuds, pens, lip balm, travel snacks, driving gloves, etc. etc.). I would have liked dual zippers on the small pocket at the top as I always seem to need to access it from the opposite side that the zipper is on, but that is such a minor nit and for the price point the features of this bag can't be beat. The larger lower pocket has a nice inner zippered section as well as some pen holder pockets to keep things neat and organized. The side mesh pockets are deep but also hold things snugly, such as an umbrella and a water bottle. The wheels are fairly silent, although the zippers are a bit noisier than some other bags. Not a deal breaker for me. Some people may not like the fact that you can't cover the wheels when using it as a backpack, but for me it's not a concern as I clean the wheels frequently and tend to wear a darker and/or wipeable outer layer if I anticipate using it as a backpack in the event some dirt gets transferred. Hasn't been an issue so far, but I am also keen to not drag it through mud, puddles, or anything else that could pick up yucky things. Shortly before buying this bag I spent well over $200 on an Everki Atlas bag that had similar features albeit some higher end materials. I ended up getting this bag instead because with the Everki, 1) I just couldn't get used to having to zip/unzip a flap to hide/reveal the wheels when alternating between wheelie bag and backpack mode and 2) the price - ouch. This bag is almost the exact same size and has exactly what I need at a fraction of the price. I am hoping it will hold up well the travel demands I plan to put on it! ... show more

  • Great bag & great customer service.
Size: 17-inch Color: Black
I really like this bag for school. I purchased it because I have a large book load, and carrying them in a regular backpack was hurting my back. This bag is large enough to fit four large textbooks and two binders, with room to spare in the other pockets. It rolls quietly and smoothly around campus, which I appreciate. I did encounter an issue after using the bag for a week—the retractable handle began to stick, making it difficult to open and close. However, after contacting Matein and sending them a few pictures and videos, they quickly sent me a replacement. Their customer service is top-notch, and I will definitely remain a customer because of their dedication to customer satisfaction. The value of the bag is great for what it offers. Aside from the minor issue with the handle, it has proven to be very durable. I’ve used it in heavy rain and walked through large puddles, yet the contents inside remained almost completely dry. If you’re debating whether to get this bag, I highly recommend it! It’s a great investment, and I can see it lasting for a long time. Once I graduate, I may even use it as a carry-on.” ... show more
