  • On the fence
Style: Refill - Crayon Yellow
I'm on the fence about this. Yes, it's better in some ways than soapstone and not so great in other ways. The actual pen is solid and heavy duty. Mine has been dropped and the crayon does not break like soapstone would, that's a plus. The sharpener in the end, nice touch but rarely used by me. When the crayon gets small, it gets stuck in the bottom and won't come out without the assistance from a 3/32" welding rod. The crayons. I got the yellow and silver. You really have to watch your stick out on the crayon, it seems to break pretty easy at times. I use mine a lot and there are times I say, "glad I bought this" and other times I'm calling it a piece of something cause the crayon breaks several times in a row. It does mark metal good but I would suggest silver and another color, red/yellow as the silver does not do so well on bare metal, cleaned for welding. Sometimes they don't work so well on new pipe with that slick shiny coating, not the green underground coating but looks like a clearcoat. Seems the pipe is so slick it don't mark well, then the crayon breaks. Overall, I would buy again. ... show more

  • Very poorly made plastic internals
Style: Holder
I received it very quickly and it looks great in the package. Cut the end off the plastic package and the black push button part (with red sharpener insert) fell off in my hand. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was BROKEN and not supposed to come off. It should be either metal or a lot thicker plastic. Looking at where it was sheered off you can see that there was very little material holding it together in the first place. Apparently the other items that Amazon put in the box with it (wire brushes, welding sleeves, and wire crimpers) were enough to press against the package this holder comes in and snap the plastic end off. Unfortunately I bought a bunch of different refills and it looks like Amazon will ding me over $5 in fees to return those so I have no choice but to order another one of these and hope for the best so I can use the refills. But based on some of the other negative reviews it looks like the breaking issue is pretty common... and I can see why after looking at this thing in person. As you can see pretty clearly in my picture, it has a major design flaw of a stress riser... the metal sleeve ends from the bottom side and the female threads for the red cap end from the top side right at the location the designer decided to put a taper in the plastic body... EXACTLY where it was broken and I suspect where they ALWAYS break. It is a shame because otherwise it seems OK but I can't fully review it since it was broken right out of the package! ... show more

  • Good product, but for me only has one use
Style: Holder
Only had it a short time, but really like the pencil, very well made and works great. My only observation is that especially the colored lead refills are fairly soft, close to a crayon, but they are really nice and work on all types of surfaces. Wish I had bought one of these a long time ago. Also since the pencil does have the needle nose tip, it is a little awkward to hold when using it more in a traditional way. Edit: now that I have used it more, I have ordered the regular graphite because I’m using it for a woodworking project and thought that the graphite would be harder than the colored refills, but the lead seems to pretty much be the same. It is quite annoying because it’s not like any pencil I’ve ever used because after sharpening and drawing a 12” line the the lead needs to be sharpened again. Only the first 2” of the line is crisp line after that it’s almost a 1/8” thick. I looked to see if they offered any different types of graphite, but there only seems to be the one that I bought. I guess that it will be useful for marking through holes that a regular shaped pencil or sharpie wouldn’t fit, but at least for me won’t be a do-all pencil and unfortunately will have to look for a better option for my general needs. ... show more

  • Too much money for actual usability
Style: Holder
After reading tons of reviews, i purchased one. Funtionality is great, sharpener works great. Lead that comes with it is too dark for slightly rusted metals. The colored refills, i found yellow provided the best visibility for most of the metal i work with. But like others mentioned, the colored refills are more like a crayon, very crumbly and need resharpening often. You have to run minimum stickout or they just break. Pros, the markings do not blow away with a nearby grinder/cutoff. Cons, way too much money for what you get as far as usability. If they could figure out how to make the colored lead out of the same/similar material as the silver lead then i might be able to justify the cost. I want to love this thing but each time i use it i just get more disappointed. One other Pro' it is very durable and easy to hold/use, gloved or bare handed. ... show more

  • Not for super fine detailed work. Good for general marking on metals and wood.
Style: Holder
Pros: This is a good solid product for marking and can do fairly detailed work if your using it to mark metal/wood in a semi open environment. It also has multiple colors to choose from for refills(comes with 1 silver). Cons: The description for the product being able to fit into small places is not accurate or slightly misleading depending on the kind of work your doing. The reason I purchased this product and was willing to spend $22.00 plus another $12.00 for yellow refill sticks was because I needed to have something that would fit through a #6 hole for a machine screw. This does not. The metal tip is almost a 1/4 " outside to outside. The lead itself will fit through a #10 machine screw hole and if sharpened will be able to mark it semi accurately. ... show more

  • the lead is excessively fragile and mechanism is dumb
Style: Holder
1st of all I found that i've actually got wasted of 60 per cent no less of the lead's length because it was cracked and broke. This is rather an unpleasant surprise for the 'industrial' tool like that. 2nd I found no way to disassemble the holder which is again makes me confused especially when the lead has gotten stuck and shows no interest in getting out no matter how hard I've pressed the releasing spring. Bad product overall. ... show more
