Pretty easy to read although the column with the centigrade numbers is somewhat distracting. Didn't realize it would be a problem to read inside from my window because it is flat. I had to figure out a way to slant it toward the window to view it. I ended up attaching it to a piece of wood that I nailed into the frame of my window. It was more of a project than I had anticipated and doesn't look that great either. I hung one in the enclosure of each of my raised beds, and they fell into the soil from time to time due to heavy winds and insecure fastening. They did not break. They are also large enough to read at a reasonable distance.

    • OUTSIDE THERMOMETER DOES THE JOB
Just out of curiosity I purchased this thermometer. We do experience some "colder" days here in FL and I wanted to see how cold it was actually getting w/o turning on the TV. Son installed on the wood fence in backyard and it seems to be doing the job. Numbers are small, even though the item itself is good size.     • Problems with accuracy - red liquid can break apart and render it useless
I got one and liked it so much I got another. PROBLEMS: yesterday I discovered 2 weird and possibly fatal problems with this thermometer. 1 - if set in hot water (say 110F) the liquid rises so fast that part of it gets broken off from the rest and leaves little bits behind when the column drops back down. I realized immediately that this would render the thermometer inoperable unless I could merge the disparate sections into one single column. I tried whirling it (centrigual force) to zero effect. I DID get the red liquid all back together after firm thumping onto a hard surface BUT this caused the glass to inch downwards, thus making the calibration seriously inaccurate. Luckily I had the new, same model thermometer to use to move the glass tube upwards so as to calibrate it again. 2 - when I compared the new thermometer (same style exactly) I discovered to my shock that the new one was calibrated WAY differently. That is, the gradations from the extremes on the two thermometers (-40F to +120F) were marked on a scale that was about 1" different! The newer device apparently had a larger glass column so the liquid could be seen more easily (slightly broader red line) and so the calibration had to be different. I have to assume the new thermometer reads correctly. But it is weird that the exact same model has two radically different layouts of the markings. ... show more
