Have been waiting for this for a long time. My old Fein multi-tool was on its last legs and I wanted a new cordless one. Having bought into the Makita cordless platform years ago, it made sense to get the Makita 18V multi-tool. The problem was it did not stack up so well against the competition. I don't necessarily have to have the latest and greatest tools, but as a pro I want something that performs as well as, or close to what's available. For one thing, it wasn't brushless, which will effect run time. Finally Makita pulled its thumb out and built this XMT04ZB. I have only had it a week so my feelings may change, but so far I'm impressed. I'll be curious to see how it compares to the other brands in side by side reviews or tests. The first thing you notice is the size. It is a bit bulky. So far this has not been an issue. With the battery it is well balanced and comfortable. I'm assuming the reason for the bulky head is due to how it performs. By that I mean it is powerful, but really quiet (compared to other models), and almost completely free of any vibrations. This thing is so smooth! It's a joy to use. Like the other top brands this has a brushless motor and a quick tool-less blade change feature. The LED light on the head is handy, and it accepts the 3 different Starlock types of blades. I hope to find an adaptor so that I can use other brand blades and generics. So far it looks like this is only being sold as "tool only". I for one like most of my tools stored in hard plastic cases. I really hope Makita makes a specific hard-case for this. ... show more

Makita quality shows, with its precise & quiet operation. A bit large in size, this is an amazing multi-tool. Such tools are not spades (figuratively speaking) that one has to measure how much it shovels -- or in this case, how fast it cuts.     • The best of all features in a battery tools that performs like a corded one.
I've been running the corded Fein, which is the original & highest-end oscillating tool, and have zero complaints about it. It is the standard setter for all oscillating tools. But this one is cordless and takes it to another level. It does have a soft start, which is the bare minimum in my book. But it also has a quick soft stop, if that makes any sense. When you shut the tool off, it stops quickly, but not immediately. That obviously helps with accuracy and avoiding "overcuts." But it also helps you control the tool when it stops. The blade release is the simplest and fastest I've ever used. The variable speed has a very big range. This is huge-- there is little to no vibration on your hand when using this tool. I can't recommend this enough. If and only if there is an area where the Fein shines above, it would be in size. The Makita is a lot bigger and thicker than the Fein. That is the only reason I gave it 3 stars for Maneuverability. But the grip is comfortable and fits the hands well. ... show more

    • Huge improvement
Had the other Makita $100 18V oscillating tool for a few years and the motor conked out so I went for this improved model that costs 2X as much. Totally worth it. As a carpenter who uses this tool daily this is a vastly superior option. Vibration is minimized, increasing cutting accuracy, comfort and speed. Noise is reduced substantially, making the tool more pleasant to use. Tool is also lighter and shorter. I have yet to use it for detail sanding so I can't report on whether there is a reduction in swirl marks compared to the cheaper one, but I suspect so. Everything is superior on this, kudos to Makita. If you use the oscillating tool regularly you will want to splurge on this more expensive version. ... show more

    • Excellent tool but with a couple of shortcomings
Overall, this is a great tool that (for the most part) demonstrates the Makita quality that I've come to expect. It feels well balanced in my hand and has a comfortable grip. The soft start is nice and the overall noise level is noticeably less than that of another popular brand that I frequently come in contact with. I like the fixed variable speed control that allows me to maintain a constant speed rather than have the speed control in the trigger which can be more difficult to maintain the best speed. The brushless motor has plenty of power and I haven't found a situation yet where I've been disappointed. It does have a couple of disappointing features. 1) I don't see any advantage to the Starlock blade mechanism and a disadvantage in needing to remove and keep track of the pin which holds the blade in place. I would have preferred the universal blade mount mechanism used on most of popular oscillating tools. 2) The blade release mechanism is poorly designed (very disappointing for a Makita tool). The release handle is not very substantial and the mechanism for attaching to the release spring is poorly designed. If you are not careful, the handle mechanism will slip over the top of the two dogs on top of the spring and your only recourse is to disassemble the tool in order to get the release handle back in place. I find that I need to be VERY gentle in using the release handle to release the blade. I still think this is an excellent tool but am disappointed in the blade release mechanism. ... show more

    • Quiet, well made
Amazed how quiet and vibration free when I first turned tool on. All these years when ever I heard this type of tool being demonstrated at the store with the high winding sound I would get far away. After seeing reviews on how quite this new Makita was I thought to give it a try. Boy was I surprised how QUIET it is. I have no fear to use it around the apartment and disturbing the neighbors as well as destroying my hearing. The tool is a little awkward to to hold due to its thickness. It has enough power for my small projects. Externally well made and bumpered from falls. Would buy it again. ... show more

I love this tool, every time I’ve use it just just works flawlessly, Worth every penny. Now that I have one I use it for all kinds of things. Get the right blades, I’ve been using it to cut rubber mat horse stall mats, hardwood, being able to plunge cut is awesome. Really everyone should I own one.
