A great interactive way to learn coding. A smart investment for a young (or older) maker!
I bought Codey Rocky for my 9 year old daughter, who is interested in getting started with coding. So far, she loves it! It was easy to set up and to get started. First, we downloaded the android app. The app has three sections: 1) Drive, 2) Draw and Run, and 3) Code. We had a lot of fun with Drive. In this section, we simply drove Codey Rocky around using the on screen joystick. We also had fun changing the pattern displayed on the screen. This was super easy to do, just touch the bubbles on the Android device and it immediately transfers to the robot screen. Drive also has a few buttons that help Codey express some personality. The Draw and Run section was fun too. You draw a pattern on the screen, and Codey will drive in that same pattern on the ground. You can add some light and sound effects by easily dragging and dropping the effects on the line that was drawn. We had fun making an obstacle course and seeing if we could get Codey to navigate it. Before we attempted the coding in section 3, I downloaded the makeblock software to my Windows 10 notebook and looked at the coding examples that are built into that software. I think we could work directly from the notebook, but my daughter copied the examples into the Tablet and I could see she was starting to get the hang of it. She is now trying to combine the coding examples to make more complex programs.

An instant success
Solid little robot, and it's nice that it works right out of the box. Birthday gift for an 8 year old, and with the software already loaded on my (Android) phone it was an instant success. (Almost like getting a new pet...) Very easy to use software for controlling the robot out of the box, and the coding software looks very straightforward as well. (Based on Scratch 2.0) He's used it daily, and is just starting to delve into the coding software to see how to take advantage of sprites (for emotions) and some of the sensors. Key will be engagement with the coding capabilities, otherwise it's kind of an RC vehicle that can display some emotions and a couple of other tricks.

Awesome robot!
My son loves his Corey Robot. He's been doing coding in school, but I thought it would be better for him to see it motion, besides on the screen. I like that it takes you through the steps to show you how to begin coding. He enjoyed using the remote control & finger drawing in the meantime while going through the steps. Small enough where it doesn't take up a lot of space, yet the right size for the hands of a child. Gives my son and I something we can do together and as a teacher, this keeps him busy doing something positive on his tablet.

Extremely disappointed
This could be a wonderful thing, but it's terrible execution ruins everything. This device is supposed to be controlled by software and could be run in 3 modes - drive with a joystick (pretty similar to your regular IR toy, only via bluetooth), draw and run - using a phone, draw a curve on the phone and than run the bot following the curve, and the third mode would be to create a visual "program" from the blocks of available actions and execute it. The only real use for the device is the third mode - if I wanted the IR toy, I'd buy one for tenth of the price, and the only reason I bought the Codey was to introduce concept of programming to my kid. Consequentially, this is the mode which doesn't work without any indication of the reason. I only use the app on the phone, which is claimed to be supported. Codey connects via bluetooth, and the app starts and opens coding screen, where you can compose programs. To actually execute them on Codey, you are expected to have two options - upload them directly to the device or execute from the phone. If first mode is chosen, app gives me green check box and "success" message, but nothing happens to the device. In second mode, I can click green flag (run) button all I want, nothing happens either. No failure messages, nothing at all. Now I can't return it (window is closed) and I am stuck with 100 IR toy.

Terrible documentation but I figured out problem with the app (updated)
I hope to resolve these problems soon, but this review will serve as a "it's not just you" if you got a Codey Rocky for your kid for Christmas and it seems way harder than it should be. The MakeBlock website is hard to navigate. I downloaded the MakeBlock app for my iPhone and it works well for the first two functions, one that lets you drive the robot and the other that lets you draw a path for it to take, flash colors and make sounds. But the programming part doesn't allow you to save a program or upload it to the robot. I looked around and it SEEMS that the company wants you to use the mBlock app rather than MakeBlock, which is not supported anymore. That app is set up differently, so it doesn't have the drive, draw and code sections. It does have a tutorial, which is good. But again there is no way that I can find to upload code to the robot. (see update below on this) I have downloaded the software for the Mac (again, not easy to actually find the link on the site!) and I'll try that now. Disadvantage to that is you have to use the USB cable or buy a Bluetooth dongle for your computer. So, stay tuned, but that's where things are now. This product has a lot of potential but the company desperately needs to work on the user interface for new owners. Provide clear directions on what to do and *make sure the software works!* UPDATE: I received a response from MakeBlock that says to continue using the MakeBlcok app, which was recently updated. She said the mBlock app doesn't support uploading to the robot. I realized the problem with uploading to Rocky was my fault -- I didn't start with an "event" to trigger to action. (Again, this is a problem of poor documentation.) I recommend you start with the "Codey Basic" tutorial on the mBlock app. That's been very helpful for us. And then you'll have to use the MakeBlock app to actually code the robot. Changed this from 2 to 3 stars because of the progress I made.
