  • Good for small bird species, not so much for bantams and up
I bought this incubator to use for my silkie eggs, as my large incubators are full and I only have a few girls laying. First, let me say that I have very few technical complaints. As always I recommend you use your own hygrometer to monitor the temp, because the existing installed temp gauge isn't that precise. Here are my thoughts. 1. This incubator would be best for quail or small parrots, or other similarly sized birds. While I did hatch bantams in it fine, they cannot stand up fully, which leaves them in a weird squatting position when they try and I could see it being a concern with causing splay leg because they cannot obtain a full height stance. Cabinet liner in the bottom helped this, but as soon as the chicks were dry I moved them to a larger incubator because they kept head pressing against the upper portion of the incubator. 2. You have to be very careful to position the little threaded bar that turns the tray in the handle of the tray. If you miss (and it's a little hard to see what you are doing through the frosted top/side) you can puncture an egg when it moves around. Ask me how I know e.e lol. 3. The egg tray is suited for small birds. 14 bantam eggs are too crowded for the tray and would be best turned manually without it. 4. When you remove the tray to give the chicks room to hatch, with eggs as large as bantam chickens you may run into the issue that when the chick is rocking around while they try to hatch, the egg can become lodged on the threaded metal piece that acts as the turner, and you can't turn it off, so it keeps turning, and depending upon how many eggs you have, if there isn't room for it to push the egg away from itself you may seriously injure your chicks. 6. I did not have to refill the reservoir, and humidity stayed decent the whole time, so that was nice. 7. The lid sits atop it easily and well seated, but it's a pain when you don't want to open it all the way. It's heavy and slides and is difficult to do much with without removing it all together. Over all thoughts? Over all, it functions how it's supposed to and is a good buy for the price, especially if you are a small operation or will be moving birds asap as they dry. Would I buy it again? Probably not, due to my concerns about the interior space for the birds. Would I reccomend it for someone with smaller hatch amounts and smaller birds? Yes. It was a good buy. Overall I'm not displeased with it, for the cost it got the job done just fine. I put 14 eggs in, four were infertile, one broke in a mishap with the turner post, and the others all hatched. So there ya go. ^.^ ... show more

  • Works but
I hatched 4 out of 5 eggs. I cannot blame the incubator for the loss as it happens. My biggest issues are that there is no window to see inside and it takes a LOT of effort and time to get a good view of anything going on inside. I had to completely darken the room and use a super bright light. Then the chicks would all run over to the light and block my view of the eggs I was trying to check. This is an issue because when an chick starts to pip you don’t want to open the incubator and risk disrupting the temperature and humidity. My second issue is there’s no humidity control so you have to trust that it’s accurate. That being said, I’ve successfully hatched a batch and will continue to use it until I can get one that is a bit larger and that I can see inside of. ... show more

  • Works!
This thing works for hatching quail, I put 25 in 13 hatched 3 developed but didn’t survive hatching the rest were duds. Going to try on silky eggs next…will add you have to keep an eye on the water/humidity. I bought a little hydrometer/thermometer as back up too.

  • Perfect for this backyard chicken farmer, see my pros and cons list for details!
UPDATE: 4/7/2017 Sorry this update is late. Unfortunately the first batch of eggs did not make it, trial and error. When I opened them up it was obvious MOST had died about a week ago. Some weren't even viable. One that did hatch just didn't make it. HOWEVER.......I started a new batch that day with FRESH eggs that I knew were absolutely fertilized, still warm, straight from the nesting boxes. These eggs hatched about three days ago and out of 8 eggs 5 hatched. The trick is to make sure that there IS NOT as much water about a day before they hatch. When they started hatching the heat from the eggs raised the humidity and the chicks just weren't getting dry. I eventually had to put them in their brooder before they were completely dry and they are doing very well! I plan on starting another batch in a few weeks. So far the brooder has held up impeccably well despite being run for nearly 2 months straight! AS FOR THE TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION: I put a BRAND NEW thermometer in the incubator and realized that the thermometer I had was wrong (and subsequently tossed out). SO, the incubator IS in fact keeping the correct temperature however be sure to check it if you're unsure. Still a great purchase!! Before I had given it 4/5 stars, I'm updating it to 5/5! _____________________________________________________________________ As of today 3/4/17 this item works VERY well for the price that it is. It fits 9 Jumbo sized chicken eggs quite well but can't fit anymore than that. I put my fertilized eggs in there just yesterday and WILL update when hatching day arrives including the condition of eggs. It seems fairly simple enough, the directions seem to have been translated so the english is a bit hard to decipher. The directions could certainly be clearer and it was a little difficult to read the wall of text, the pictures were definitely more helpful. Right when you open it there are several trays, the white ones and the black one, a little bag with a fuse inside, the power cord, and the tray dividers. Place the smaller of the trays at the bottom, this is the hatching tray and also allows the larger white tray to reach the egg turner. I put about a 1/4 cup of hot water on the bottom including a wet paper towel to help with humidity. The egg tray is simple enough, arrange the eggs so that they have room to turn and place the dividers. The picture they have in the directions is probably for medium/large sized chicken eggs. My jumbo eggs were definitely snug and only 9 of them fit. This is adjustable so if you are going to be doing larger eggs such as turkey or smaller eggs such as quail it WILL accomodate them. The eggs have been in there for approximately 24 hours. I had them in a homemade incubator for a little over a week so I know they are viable and I have definitely seen movement. This incubator is completely hands off HOWEVER I did place an instant read thermometer inside (through the little hole at the top) and it reads 95-100F when I set the temperature at 38.4C. This is something you may want to look into. A little cooling is ok since in nature Mama bird isn't on the eggs 24/7. As long as they don't cool off too much I don't see a problem. I really love that it turns them automatically and I haven't had a problem with that. RESIST THE URGE TO OPEN AND CHECK ON THEM. All in all I believe this is a great purchase. It is perfect for a small backyard chicken keeper like myself, doesn't take up any space, is fairly quiet other than the small fan noise like a computer, and keeps the temperature regulated near perfectly. PROS: Doesn't take up any space QUIET Tray is adjustable (HOLDS 9 JUMBO CHICKEN EGGS for me) Temperature is near perfect Automatic turner works very well Small CONS: Temperature does fluctuate a bit (about 5 degrees), put an instant read thermometer inside if you're concerned. No way to monitor humidity other than purchasing a reader Like I said, perfect for a small farmer. This is perfect for me to hatch out some chicks to refresh my flock without purchasing hatching eggs or hatched chicks. Some things I just thought about to help with the temperature fluctuation would be putting it with towels around it maybe nestled in a cardboard box. Or keep it someplace in your house where it's naturally warm. I have mine in my bedroom where it does tend to be on the cooler side. I WILL UPDATE WHEN THE CHICKS HATCH! They're due the 14th of March. ... show more

  • It worked!
I really enjoyed this incubator. It’s the first time I’ve done a hatch and I had a few small issues. The first issue was that I cracked one of my own eggs when going to candle and the cover slid. The screw that goes into the tray to rotate the eggs went right through an egg that was very developed. It was awful. The other issue is it doesn’t seem to be consistent with temp. It’s annoying it’s in Celsius but that’s fine. I had an okay time keeping temp regular once I got it up to what it should be until around day 19 then it started not being regular with the temp and I was having to adjust it often. All in all I really enjoyed this incubator but I do think I’d pay a little more for a “better rated” one next time. ... show more
