I purchased these and then freaked out when I saw reviews on YouTube that these have a bad hiss to them. So when I first received them, I took them out of the box and plugged them right into the wall. No noise whatsoever. Then I use the balanced input and output out of the Mackie 8 sub to hook them up and still 0 noise. Actually I wouldn't even know they were on if the light did not illuminate. So I don't know if Mackie has fixed the issue or some people have gotten defective units. But these things are great. I'm a tech house producer and the clarity of the speakers is amazing. I just got these, unpacked the box , and plugged in. First impressions: Very Good. This is a provisional 5-star review, based on very solid and clean sound, and no hiss at all. Many reviewers mentioned objectionable hiss, but I'm not hearing it. (Maybe someone at Mackie read the reviews??) I got these for my small apartment studio mixing desk. It is true, as mentioned, that these don't sound beautiful - but they are not designed for pleasure listening (that's what my Polk pair, as well as Cambridge satellite/Bose sub combo are for). These are for mixing my own recording projects, mostly consisting of acoustic guitars, bass, and vocals. As such, I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of writing and recording - which Covid lockdowns and then open-heart surgery put a halt to a while back. Fortunately I'm healthy now! I bought these for a quick throw-together bedroom studio to create demos and catch song inspiration. I did NOT buy these for sheer volume but instead for clarity and pristine reproduction. I am very surprised to find that these bad boys can crank out and get pretty loud while retaining great tone and clear sound! They can get much louder than I ever intend to use them, so I am very happy with the power capability and quality of sound. For the price these are worth every penny and you could do much worse. great speakers for the price, obviously a little lacking in the lower end but other then that I have no issues with these. I don't think there are a better pair of monitors at this price. Even for a non music enthusiast they really pack a huge punch for 100 bucks.

I'm going to start with the cons. With the out of the box wiring, these monitors do not sound well. They crackle, pop the bass sounds muddy and the highs are harsh. Now the Pro. With "premium cables" these monitors really shine. Luckily I had a set of 3.5mm TRS to RCA stereo breakout cables and 14AWG OFC speaker cable laying around. I threw aside the stock wires and instead used the above mentioned. These speakers now sound crisp and clean. No muddy bass or harsh highs anymore. Aside from having to toss aside the out of the box wiring, these monitors are definitely a great buy and definitely will give you that studio sound. ... show more

    • Failed way too soon

I bought these for a project that never got off the ground, so they were lightly used. They failed after less than 100 hrs of use. Looking into it it appears pretty common that they cook from insufficient heat dissipation. They did perform well relative to the price when new, revealing, reasonably accurate. But they're junk. It will feel weird sending them to the landfill seeing as they look - and practically are - new. ... show more

The quick rundown. These CR4-X are a replacement for my old CR3 that were fried during an massive power surge (that went through a surge protector). I am purely happy with them. These are probably the only speakers on the market that far surpass all desktop speakers but fall below that studio tier of mixing speakers. For the price point, these can’t be beat. They have a full, rich sound. If you want to crank some music, run them as-is. If you want to mix some music, stuff the ports with a sock. If you do that, the sound is flatter for a truer neutral mix. On a lot of reviews of things you see people mention, “if these ever break I’ll buy them again!” In this case, it’s actually true…and I upgraded from the 3” to the 4”. Get some! ... show more

    • Good, but Annoying Non-Adjustable Noise Gate

First, let me start by saying the quality of sound from these speakers has been very good. They do not seem to have any specific bias making it easy to put together audio mixes accurately. They have plenty of punch for my home studio and I find that I can run them at about a quarter volume without becoming overwhelmingly loud for the space. They were easy to setup and get attached to my system, and I bought a few wall mounted stands to integrate them fully into my setup. My biggest complaint, and one of the primary reasons I would never recommend these monitors to anyone doing music production is that they have a built in noise-gate (likely to combat static/hiss at lower volumes) that cannot be adjusted. For many mixes, this isn't a problem and goes unnoticed. However, when I'm doing a piano based mix or a classical orchestration, when the volume gets low from the input side of the speaker, the noise gate activates making it impossible to use these alone to put together a mix. I will be contacting Mackie at some point to see if they can provide solutions other than "make sure the source input volume is at maximum" -- as even this does not work with piano and orchestrated pieces. At a minimum, it would be nice to have an adjustment knob or a switch that allows you to disable the noise gate -- as this is becoming the single most annoying aspect of these monitors. If the noise gate was adjustable, I would easily give these monitors 5 stars, but I wrestled between 2 or 3 stars for this review -- it's just that annoying. ... show more
