Top Amazon Reviews

  • Good for certain uses
Model: SPA10
This review is for the SPA-10 (10" woofer; AC-only power). I recommended one of these several years ago for use at company meetings with about 50 attendees. It has worked just fine in that application. Recently, I wanted a speaker to take into the yard for background music. My small battery-powered Bluetooth speakers just don't have enough oomph, so I bought an SPA-10. For me, the MP3 player is the most important feature. I figured that it'd be easier (and more reliable) than pairing the speaker with my phone or one of my Bluetooth-capable audio players. The sound quality and volume are the subject of many negative reviews, I've noticed. I think it's important to have reasonable expectations. The SPA-10 has a maximum volume of about 95 dB; this is in the product spec. I confirmed this: at full volume on the MP3 player and measuring the volume a few feet from the front of the speaker, I was seeing average volumes in the mid-90s while the speaker's clip LED was just barely flickering. Again, qualifiers are important: this was with tone controls flat and with a program source known to peak at 0 dB with roughly a 10 dB peak-to-average ratio. (Think: jazz.) If you try the same experiment with MP3 that are brickwall limited (peaks at 0 dB with an almost nonexistent peak-to-average ratio; think modern rock and pop), you'll have to reduce the volume to avoid clipping. So... hold that 95 dB max volume in mind and take a look at the sensitivity figure published by the manufacturer. It's beyond the scope of a review to get into the underlying analysis, but this speaker clearly does not use a 100-watt amplifier. I'd bet that the rated continuous output is somewhere in the range of 15 to 25 watts. To be fair, everyone in the audio industry multiplies their continuous-power rating by a factor of four or so. (Those 1,000-watt powered speakers are, like the LyxPro SPA-10, rated for *peak* power. The usual way to confirm estimated power is to look at the rated power *input* and assume an efficiency based upon the amplifier tech (in the case of a class D amp, probably near 80%). Unfortunately, the input power draw is not disclosed by the manufacturer, eithr in the minimal manual or on the back panel of the unit. This speaker would keep up with a small jazz ensemble. A rock band: not a chance. The SPA-10 would be hopelessly overpowered by a typical rock drummer or a small tube-powered guitar amp. Likewise, if you like heavy bass at chest-thumping volumes, look eleswhere. Solid bass uses a lot of power. The EQ controls are quite effective. Small amounts of bass and treble boost help to open up the sound at lower volumes. Just be aware that you won't be able to play the SPA-10 at full volume *and* boost the bass; the amplifier simply won't keep up. BTW, on the unit I received, both EQ controls are labelled "Treble". (The lower Treble control should have been labelled "Bass".) The player module is advertised to handle MP3 and WMA playback as well as Bluetooth streaming. I found that the Bluetooth receiver has a limited range; I honestly wouldn't depend upon it unless I was going to leave the player within a couple feet of the speaker. MP3s play just fine. I have about 1,000 MP3s on an SD card with no folders (directories). The player simply runs through the files in a fixed order (I'm not certain whether the player sorts by name or just reads the directory in the order it was written); I have not been able to find an option to do shuffle play. My SPA-10 came with a remote control. This is, physically, the same kind of tiny 21-button remote that you see with a lot of decorative LED lights, but with different labels on the buttons. The remote is actually too small to be comfortably usable, and it doesn't have much range. The speaker's IR sensor for the remote is located behind the perforated metal speaker grill, right at the very top. The remote is the only way to directly select a track, and you must know the number of track you want. The player displays a 4-digit track number during selection; unfortunately the display and the remote sensor are on opposite faces of the cabinet. The unit I received also has an FM tuner. It works fine for me. Overall, this is a fine unit so long as you understand its limitations. If what you really need is a prosumer-grade powered speaker, the SPA-10 isn't going to magically save you the $500 cost difference. For background music or for speaking to a small audience, the SPA-10 is fine. ... show more

  • Mercancía re acondicionada
Model: SPA8
Excelente compra. ... show more

  • Great very clear sounding speakers!
Model: SPA8
I didn't purchase my SPA-8Bat from Amazon but I did purchase my non battery unit here. But units are great especially for the price. I have both the 8 inch Battery and non battery units. I wanted at least one unit that could be used in case I didn't have power. The only drawback I have seen is not so much base of course I kinda expected that from a 8 inch woofer. So I have both units on stands and teamed up with a 10 inch powered subwoofer. This works great for showing movies outside with my projecter. It also is great for music because I do a few Christian DJ gigs for churchs, parties, outdoor worship and weddings. Several people talked about how the battery didn't last. I don't have that issue but I mostly use it plugged in. I realize it wouldn't be as convenient but you do have the option to hook it up to an external battery. Some might want to check into that. I also find the mixing controls, bluetooth connection and other connections to be very useful. Several other speakers don't have this. ... show more

  • GREAT Until I turned in on. Lots of Features - Harsh and Distorted - Poor Low End Response
Model: SPA8
Look ... this speaker is dirt cheap and it sounds like ... Well ... DIRT. Ignore the reviews that say this is the BEST SPEAKER EVER! I frankly don't know where in CHINA all these glowing reviews are coming from. : ) It is really very full featured to be perfectly fair and the BlueTooth connected no problem. Everything works as far as functionality goes. Not sure what other feature you would want in a speaker. Unfortunately sound quality is poor. There's lots of distortion, harshness and clipping even at low volume. Sounds like a cheap piezo tweeter and a trashy one too. The picture shows a compression driver but not what shipped. EQ-ing doesn't help much either. Not sure if it is the internal amp or the speakers or both. Not much low end response either even for an 8" woofer so don't expect it it pound the ground. I connected it via a proper XLR balanced cable to another known quality powered speaker and got a little distortion from that one too so it might not just be the speakers. Bluetooth may be adding some distortion too. I thought maybe my phones' bluetooth might have been the problem so I went to a Klipsch sound system we have paired with the same phone to ... FIX my ears and compare the quality to that. Yep ... sounded great. So ... I am going to give this thing a proper breakin period and see if it improves at all ... I'm frankly not hopeful. It was absolutely great ... until I turned it on. Oh well ... I'll work with it for a while and see if it improves. I have other powered speakers of various qualities so I know what to expect. Not sure this thing is usable even at this bargain basement price. Will update if I change my opinion. Otherwise if it doesn't improve in a week of breakin, it is going back. Update: The overall is improving a little bit with 70% burn in and I gave this thing another work out this morning using the Bluetooth. I ran my bible narratibe app through it with just voice and it bobbled the blutooth connection some skipping words in and out right when the BOSS was speaking. Doesn't do this with music however. May be a demon. This is a Samsung phone I have used and paired with at least 8 or 9 other devices including my car and Klipsh entertainment system with no problems. Hmm ... I don't know whether to have it Exorcised or send it back. I think I might send it back it doesn't meet my bare minimum quality standards even at this price. The perfomance from vocal mics and the SD Card is a little better to be fair and acceptable to those not so picky as myself. I hate leaving bad reviews but I feel all these glowing reviews on this item may not be LEGIT to be frank. My go with another recognizable brand name with similar features and try again. Performance just did NOT live up to the Feature Set. It may be good enough for casual voice use and speaking. Music is iffy. I'm going to keep pushing it for a week. Maybe it will improve further. I can smell the voice coils a little ... they may be loosening up : ) On a more positive note , it does work exactly as advertised if you aren't a Nit Picker like me. ... show more
