  • Final Backpack
Color: Grey
Ok, so like many of you reading this; I too have been on the hunt for the perfect backpack. Its hard, we all have particular requirements, needs and uses for it. For me, this is an "in-between" backpack. My most recent EDC has been a Lowepro Protactic 450 AW (first version) for a few years now. It's been a staple, but it probably satisfied 60% of my needs. Interior was great, but of course the no other compartment for extra's was inconvenient. I ended up buying a few standard molle pouches that I attached to the outside and gave me additional room and even a water bottle holder, but it still wasn't right. For quick and non-chalant outings, I've used Think Tank shoulder bags, most recently a Retrospective 10 V2.0. As good as that is, it only serves well for particular situations. Additionally, and because I like to do some landscape photography that requires a decent hike, I picked up the Lowepro Flipside Trek 450. I needed that split compartment for camera gear, split to baby gear (as I harness my daughter to my chest while I hike and need the extra diapers, wipes, clothes, etc. for her), and the last main compartment for my additional gear (jacket, snacks, etc.). That bag was great because it had a deep pocket and held my gripped Nikon D850 with a 24-70 2.8 attached, a 70-200 2.8, a 50 1.8, and some extras. It was a bit rough to get in and out, but it worked. However, with recently picking up a DJI Mavic Mini, I needed more space. Enter this Lowepro Whistler 450 AW II: At first, I didn't remove any tags. I laid out all of my gear that I intended to use this bag for and I went to town configuring the most efficient way to pack my stuff; This bag worked great! My gripped DSLR fit perfectly and deep, so the cover wasn't pressing down on it like the Flipside did. To explain, 0.40" goes a long way in height, and with this bag coming in at over 7' in depth, that was perfect. It's actually so deep that I can stand my 70-200 to save space instead of laying it down. It does force the cover to press on it, but I didn't feel it once I wore the pack. The camera compartment holds my DJI Mavic Mini Fly More Kit in its container, a Lowepro GearUp camera box, a Nikon 50 1.8, a Nikon 70-200 2.8, a gripped Nikon D850 with attached Nikkor 24-70 2.8, GoPro Hero, Syrp Mini Genie 2, GoPro accessories, and still has plenty of camera compartment space. I utilize the top compartment for baby items, to include a changing mat, wipes, diapers, trash bags, extra onsie's and clothes, a towel and a Tactical Baby Gear EBOK. The big flat side compartment really is big. What you don't see spoken of is that the compartment actually is minimized and there's an expansion zipper to make it full size. So if you're not using the massive size, you can zip it down a notch for a smaller footprint and better weight distribution to your back. You can use it to store other items like jackets, hiking gear, food and even additional camera gear in pouches. The bottom is made of an abrasion resistant material that's waterproof and to confirm, it DOES stand on its own and does not tip over. The whole construction is very high quality, water resistant and feels nice. The camera compartment zippers are massive and glide very well, as do the other compartment zippers, but they're smaller. The shoulder straps are super thick and vented, and they feel really nice on your shoulders. The adjustment straps are fantastic and work well too. The downside to this bag is that it is super catered to the extreme hiker/sports action person. Because of that and the mounting points on the bag, there's not even a water bottle holder on either side or an area where your tripod's feet can sit in. The side straps are heavy duty for sure, but your tripods and other items have to hang down versus sit in when attached to the bag. I also removed the two bright orange straps going across the bag because they serve me no purpose and its an obnoxious color that "screams look at me." The one zippered side compartment has two divided interior pockets, and is built to expand, but inhibited because the material is not stretchable and the compartment is stitched in place. So you may be able to fit a slim wallet, a lens cleaning cloth, a cell phone and things of that nature, but not much else. The last gripe is the awesome but ridiculous waist belt. Awesome as in its functionality and ability, but ridiculous because its sewn in. I won't be using the belt every time I hike and unzipping the camera compartment is kind of laughable when you have to constantly flip and flop both sides back and forth to undo the zipper. On my Flipside Trek 450, I cut the sewn in belt off and I think I'm going to do the same to this one as well. Overall, this has turned into my EDC backpack; both the Protactic and Flipside 450's have been bagged and shelved. Situation dependent, I will still use my Think Tank shoulder bag, and the Nomatic backpack for travel and urban shoots. The no water bottle pouch isn't a deal breaker, but its pretty discouraging that after so many years of being a reputable company and expert in packs, you create a hiking and action sports backpack with the intent of either long distance exertion or physical fitness exertion, and you don't give the person a place to carry something to drink... makes no sense. So that'll go in the big front compartment until I figure out a way to attach something to the outside of the pack. I highly recommend it, but am giving it 4 stars for the massive brain farts on the waist belt atrocity and no water bottle holder, but ingenious and size oriented compartments. You can YouTube Peter McKinnon's video "My Everyday CAMERA Bag!" for reference and please note; I've literally gone back and forth on MANY backpacks in comparison before I bought this one. Everything from Peak Design, Incase, Lowepro, Think Tank, Mindshift and a whole host. The recommendation I have to make is that we are all individual people with different and specific needs, so it's not about the best backpack, but the right backpack that works for you and your intended use. PS. I say that this is an "in-between" because I'm waiting on my Nomatic Peter McKinnon camera backpack to arrive in April, which will be used for primary travel and urban shoots. ... show more

  • Great camera bag….not so great hiking bag.
Color: Grey
This bag can carry a lot of camera gear and it has a deep compartment. I like that the front compartment is water proof making it perfect to store my rain gear in wet or dry. But this bag has one serious flaw. One I didn’t even think about when looking for a bag because I incorrectly just assumed every bag designed for adventure/outdoor photography would have this. A place to carry water. Seriously, this bag does not have a designated place to Cary a water bladder or bottle. I experimented with putting a bladder in the laptop sleeve but it’s so narrow I worry about it putting too much pressure on the bladder and creating a big problem. I can’t believe the designers didn’t think about water for a pack like this. It has me considering sending this bag back. ... show more

  • Very Heavy - 7lbs empty
Color: Grey
This bag is not for hiking or climbing mountains. Also, not good for traveling. It is strictly for carrying heavy gear when weight is not an issue. I had to return mine because I was simply looking for a backpacking bag with a camera holder.
